Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword expansion. Especially the mod 'Fall from Heaven'. It's a gigantic fantasy mod that has more content than most commercial games do. Totally worth getting if you have civ4

 

Galactic Civilizations 2: Dark Avatar expansion - Probably the best 4X game there is, definately one of the most fun.

 

SpaceRangers 2 - It's pretty much like Sid Meiers Pirates!, but in space!

I sometimes play Counter Strike: Source and if my ISP is feeling lame I play CNC Zero Hour against the computer. As you can see I haven't bought a new game for ages (well I have, but I don't play them because they are bad, punkbuster installs 2-3 services that run in the background even when you aren't playing the game, they even say it's malware in the license).

 

Trackmania Nations could easily be setup for some nice challenges I guess
