Laying down a fresh sheet of flypaper for its growing community, News Corp.'s (NYSE: NWS) MySpace will launch a casual games channel in a few months. The company is teaming up with Oberon Media to create original games that will encourage users of the social networking website to spend more time on MySpace playing addictive multiplayer games.

 

If the name Oberon doesn't ring a bell, it's because the company typically thrives behind the stage. It teams up with traffic magnets like Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) and Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) to deliver unique games.

 

Casual gaming is a big industry. Even if some of its leading players, like Oberon and PopCap Games, aren't exactly household words, publicly traded heavies like Electronic Arts (Nasdaq: ERTS) and RealNetworks (Nasdaq: RNWK) are all over the niche.

Besides, they're looking for web-based gizmos, not SubSpace. Their technical setup can't handle twitch gaming.

the escapist isn't exactly the wide audience that myspace, steam or facebook is. WHilst it was a good thing its effect was always going to be limited given its "cult" (for lack of a better word) status.

I know that SVS quit newblet, much as is syped no longer on staff, point being that they were there on the first place whereas those types shouldn't have anywhere near access to adminsitrative capaibilities over other users at all, ever.

Meaning the staff vetting filter service is on the face.

And anyway, the thing myspace is going to run is entirely different from their regular service and is not something facebook is offering (AFAIK) or intending to so facebook is not even an issue.

Their idea is to make you play !@#$%^&*ty browser games while they run advertisement banners on the side...ancient !@#$%^&* that crashed the dot com back in 98-Y2K and hasn't been profitable ever since except perhaps to Google for some who-knows-why godforsaken reason.

One day advertisers wake up and realize that search engines, even google, aren't the endgame and the entire scheme will drop dead in the water on the spot.

More people will use this myspace thing, probably when bored and looking for a good free game to play which is exactly what we have to offer. Whilst the general myspace pop may not be the most desirable people in the world they are a population and players is what we need more then skilled super nerds to develop the game.
