Russia Plants Underwater Flag, Claims Arctic Seafloor

Russia has laid claim to the seafloor at the North Pole, planting its national flag underwater in the hopes of securing the Arctic's potential motherlode of natural resources.

In an unprecedented dive beneath the ice, two three-person submersibles descended 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) to the bottom, where one symbolically dropped a !@#$%^&*anium capsule containing a Russian flag.

Was reading more on this the other day, seems the arctic ice sheet has pulled back 10% more this year than last year. Note, year, not decade, not years, 1 single year... wow.

Old news... it ends up like this "all the arctic nations reject any claims made by Russia bla bla bla" and laugh at Russia for trying.

More important news related to the arctic sheet's rapid retreat is "Canadian Internal Waters" aka "The NorthWest passage".

True. There is just more news developing on it lately. I couldn't find a more recent article about it except in a few magazines I was reading at the Eye Doctor's waiting on the g/f.

But yeah, the Northwest passage, and Claiming more land into the arctic for its resources are the big things right now.

Crazy Soviets....

I read about this a while back. My favorite part was the response of some government official, "This isn't the 14th century, you can't go around planting flags and lay claim to a territory". Not the exact wording.
