Suppose you have a zone you're sysop in with a seizable and normal amount of population (say, DSB / EG / MG - alike). You have a staff performing good and running the zone each day. One of your moderators is doing an outstanding job and is also developing the zone putting lots of his spare time into it.

One day you discover that that moderators has abused his powers and has put his name on sysops.txt through using a sysop name he had access to. You are receiving reports that he has been abusing the bots with the sysop powers and kicking players as he likes.

What would you do? Kick him out of staff and the zone and loose a valuable staff member or act like you haven't seen it and leave him on staff even though you can't entirely trust him anymore?

What do you find more important? What would be the thing that makes you turn to the other side of your decision?

Note, this is just a hypothetical question and story. It's only slightly based on a similar incident (some time ago). blum.gif

If he did it all via sysop logs won't help.

I would remove the staffer personally.

He's abusing via sysop powers so that its "untracable", but soon he'd begin abusing under other facets. And honestly I wouldn't want anyone on my staff who would go behind my back to gain sysop access and then use it to abuse players, which in turn hurts the zone.

I'll hypothetically assume that him being on sysop.txt and all that was to his knowdlege and with malicious intent.

The keq question I'd ask myself is, how much would we suffer if we lost him? If he had any real skill in the development he was putting into the zone, I probably would not want to axe him. However something obviously has to be done, and I'd probably consider removing bot powers for some time, putting him on full suspension (no powers until w/e date you choose), or just demot e him (but if hes a mod I guess he can't go any lower).

Id probably bring in some of the players he kicked into a priv arena with me and him, and talk about it with them. How they felt about his actions, tell them his value to the zone, and ask them whether or not they think he should stay. I guess I'd go to this trouble because at this point, the problem is really looking bad to the public. You don't want to keep him and look like you allow abuse, but you don't want to get rid of someone who offers real benefits. That's why'd Id ask the players he wronged for opinions.

If he is valuable (done this in the past) limit his bot abilities to mod level only. The only mod+ abilities TRULY needed are prizing, points, info, and einfo. He just has to work around it, and suffer for what he did.

If he is unvaluable, than fire him.

He is abusing, and knows what he is doing, for that he has broken his trust.
