Slicer Posted October 12, 2007 Report Posted October 12, 2007 I've recently started doing a course at Wolverhampton University, Computer Science (Games Development) of course. What is strange is I feel completely different at University than I did in my other schooling, I mean the living on your own thing is nothing new to me but I feel like I have so much control over my life now Also strangely enough I feel like I want to lead groups of people (not like a cult, I don't wanna a m!@#$%^&* suicide... just yet )Anyone else recently go to uni? How'd it make ya feel?-Simon Lee
»Purge Posted October 12, 2007 Report Posted October 12, 2007 yeah i just started my uni this year too... not doing comp sci though.. doing a premed schedule with a major in chemistry... LOTS of work.. test tomorrow in chem + calc and i feel like i know nothing no matter how hard i study lol im also developing ADHD no, im serious, i took a questionnaire on webmd.com and it said i have a high probabilty of ADHD.. i heard the meds make u concentrate more which is what i really need.. my studying "skills" from high school cant be used here in college ..other than that, im on the college vball team and that keeps me stress-free... until i realize i have to study so yeah, college would change a person especially if they dorm there... college = life
rootbear75 Posted October 12, 2007 Report Posted October 12, 2007 omg, i love collegeit is soo much fun 16 player floor halo tournies?! omg im in heaven it is so much harder to get your homework done however, cause theres so many more distractionstheres also the issue of weight gain... i have already gained at least 10 lbs since end of august.also, some floormates/roommates are !@#$%^&* bags... im already trying to switch out of my room...
masscarnage Posted October 12, 2007 Report Posted October 12, 2007 i jus got into college this quarter too, i love the control but hate the responsibilities im going Comp Sci aswell but not for mainly gaming i love to program anything lol. But im working my self thro college and dont seem to have anytime for myself its either school/studying/work and ive lost almost 20lbs from all the missed meals i skip from workin double shifts or studyin thro meals and then goin and runnin to free my mind lol the one thing i noticed is the faster you throw down your walls the easier youll meet friends and overall do better got a gf the 2nd week and lots of friends in all my classes to do study groups and get to rely on.
rootbear75 Posted October 12, 2007 Report Posted October 12, 2007 skipping meals isnt a good thing...
Slicer Posted October 12, 2007 Author Report Posted October 12, 2007 lol you'll find people develop wierd habits, I tend to skip meals and only had a sandwhich for the entire of yesterday, but then again Im a big guy with plenty of reserves Im also working on myself at uni, but when isn't anyone working on themselves?-Simon Lee
Dav Posted October 12, 2007 Report Posted October 12, 2007 yeah uni is much better then being at home, I just finished my degree and am doing post grad now, 4 more years
Aileron Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 Just finished my mathematics degree, with also something close to a minor in physics. Thought I'd go into crypotology, then simulator making, but haven't had any luck, so I guess it's grad school for me. I mean it's wierd...I am qualified to do the positions I'm applying for...I'm just not as qualified as the people with more specific majors. No, you don't have ADHD...college life simulates all forms insanity. I for one thought I was going psychotic, turns out it was just stress. It's not as unusual as you think to want to kill and eat the campus squirrels. It's mostly caused by hunger, stress, and the fact that those things are !@#$%^&* annoying and don't even act like wild animals. The tolerability of roomates depends on major. For instance, my roommates and I weren't best of friends. I was science, they were humanities. Thus, they had tons of free time and a big social life, where I had to stay and home, work a lot, and spend my free time on the computer with you clowns. Thus, I was causing messes I didn't always have time to clean up, while they had free reign to goof off during the big study times. I remember my roomate inviting three friends over every night during finals week. At first I figured that they were studying, like I was. About the third day, I was going to the kitchen for a beer, looked over and found out that they had been playing pencil and paper D & D the whole time - During Finals Week!!!! I had to work. It disturbs me to no end that I was jealous of people who had so much free time as to waste it in such a stupid manner.
tcsoccerman Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 (edited) for those of u going into computer science, can u tell me what u think of my attached program. I have been studying c# independently(website tutorials) for about 6 months now and i wanna know what this is .... compared to what you do in college. I'm thinking of going into computer science/programming but it seems risky :\Sport_Tracker.zip Edited October 15, 2007 by tcsoccerman
Samapico Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 I'm not in computer science, but the program is visually ugly, but that's not a big deal If you want opinion from programming guys, show them the source, only then can they check your design
tcsoccerman Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 (edited) yeh i try hard on visuals but it's hard. i just use the visual editor for visuals and it's limited, and where it's limited i don't know how to "manually" edit visuals. anyways, heres the src i suppose :\. I've been asking for visual ideas for decades now, so plz consider. p.s. Here's the run through on my programming methods:classes for...coaches/staff, players, financeitems, scheduled events, scoutedplayers, gamesright now i'm still getting game class figured out, everything else is good.listview items.tag has there class object, editers follow a pattern as well (addplayerform, for example).made in sharpdevelop.Sport_Tracker_src.zip Edited October 15, 2007 by tcsoccerman

I remember in my second year when waiting for an exam !@#$%^&*led "Biophysical Chemistry" they called a second year unit called "introduction to TV studies" My jaw hit the ground thinking this must be some kind of a joke but it wasn't. I spent most of the session looking across the hall thinking you b*******!
rootbear75 Posted October 16, 2007 Report Posted October 16, 2007 funny !@#$%^&* happened here... one of my friends on the floor was so pissed off with his roommate, that when he left his backpack with pot in it, we called the cops. yes, i said WE. he said he filled out a incident form online, and i was like, why not just call the cops?so he did, they came, and the found it.today, i didnt know, apparently they came again with a search warrant. and found 2 blue pills with no labeling, and a small thing of marijuana. they had the search warrant cause he was out on bail from the 11th for petty larceny or somethinhg like that all i can say, is he has at most 2 weeks, then hes gone. (then i get his room! yay! a bigger room!)
SeVeR Posted October 16, 2007 Report Posted October 16, 2007 I remember in my second year when waiting for an exam !@#$%^&*led "Biophysical Chemistry" they called a second year unit called "introduction to TV studies" My jaw hit the ground thinking this must be some kind of a joke but it wasn't. I spent most of the session looking across the hall thinking you b*******! You must be in the UK aswell! At my uni they do a "Dance" degree. Not only are these sorts of degrees useless for getting any kind of respectable job, but they're useless for the areas the degrees are tailored for. With TV studies or media studies you'd come out and be competing with 100 other schmucks for one job as a secretary/!@#$%^&*istant for someone who's already made it. As for dance, degrees mean nothing, experience means everything. They even do "counselling" courses to get people qualified as counsellors, and when they come out after spending thousands of pounds and a couple of years of their lives, the only jobs are taken already by the people teaching the !@#$%^&*ed course! In a few years you'll probably be able to do a degree in Magic Tricks. I personally have just finished a 4 year undergrad+masters degree in Physics with a year in research at ORNL in Tennessee. Now i'm doing a PhD in Nuclear Physics, so i can certainly relate to the "4 more years!!" comment, my friends are so jealous!

My first programmin class is Discrete Structures and all ive been doin is math really less programming, but once you p!@#$%^&* that you go into java finish 2 quarters of that and then all forms of C after that i dunno havent planned that far ahead for my self

I'm thinking of going into computer science/programming but it seems risky :\ You don't go to college to learn a programming language, they learn you the logic of programming with a oo language such as java. You also get Analysis & Design (i do) that teaches you more about UML and design patterns. I also get quite some math and economics (when i was at university i got a LOT of math, now that i'm in college not so much) Most of the people here at informatics fail because they think it's only programming (success rate of 20% isn't that much ).(But then again, most ppl of my class don't go to all classes and go to parties where they drink until they puke every week ">.>) And usually the first thing they do is unlearn everything you learned yourself, because the techniques are usually bad if you learned it yourself.
