PoLiX Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 Updated all the code. Finally just said !@#$%^&* it, and did Tables, they're compatible with all browsers (IE 6 and 7, FF, Opera, etc.) and I don't have to spend so much time fixing the css issues, only to have another browser see it differently. I wanted to use it as a project to learn, but seems that failed. http://polix.sscentral.com/ Got more to go, and updating the sections, changing some around, etc. But will be ready very soon.
MikeTheNose Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 It's beautiful, but if a potential player comes to that site they'll want to see a page that say's "What is Subspace/Continuum". Every game's website seems to have one except for ours. "About Subspace/Continuum" would be better than "Why Download"
»Rowen Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 Polix, I love you like an online brother. Except someone needs to send you a copy of "Don't Make Me THINK" by Steve Krug. I have to read each of the menu options to find out what it is I exactly want. Nothing stands out.
PoLiX Posted August 26, 2007 Author Report Posted August 26, 2007 Not my design, don't got time to design one... so meh. And the menu options I plan to change, I am just trying to get everything finally together.
»CypherJF Posted August 26, 2007 Report Posted August 26, 2007 I'd switch "Game History" and "Why Download?" and make the 'Why Download' => 'About Subspace/Continuum' like MikeTheNose elaborated. Shouldn't be too difficult, the person who designed this should have given you the photoshop file (or alike)?
PoLiX Posted August 27, 2007 Author Report Posted August 27, 2007 And the menu options I plan to change Sometimes I wonder if people really read what I type.
»Ceiu Posted August 27, 2007 Report Posted August 27, 2007 http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%...ine&group=1 All of those need to be fixed.
PoLiX Posted August 27, 2007 Author Report Posted August 27, 2007 Ok... Fixed and Fixed... Since you all kept complaining about the Menu, I put the finalized one that has been on my pc up. I may tweak 1 or 2 still, but I had planned to move a lot around. Anyways, there is how it sits for now. Wednesday I will do some more work to it, as the g/f closes (12:30-9) and I am off all day, so I won't have her bugging me to do something and I can spend some more time on this. For now, gonna go hop a shower, and get ready to drive 221miles round trip. Later guys.
»CypherJF Posted August 27, 2007 Report Posted August 27, 2007 Much better... I do read what you say, however, you didn't elaborate on "And the menu options I plan to change"... way too open of a statement.
»Maverick Posted August 28, 2007 Report Posted August 28, 2007 Looks better but I think that some menu items needs still to be moved a bit. There are now the following menu items:SSCENTRAL NEWS | ABOUT CONTINUUM | TECHNICAL SUPPORT | SPECIAL FEATURES SSFORUM NETWORK | ART & SCREENSHOTS | GUIDE / TIPS & TRICKS | PLAYER QUOTES SQUAD CENTRAL | ZONE INFORMATION | FILE DOWNLOADS | SCORES & STATS If I was a complete new player I would read through the menu items and the first 3 items I read are "SSCentral news" , "SSForum Network" and "Squad Central". With each menu item I wouldn't know what it's about and some people would already quit at this point. Then I would read "About continuum" - yes that's what I'm looking for and I would navigate to there. After reading the about continuum a bit I would start searching for the download which is the item at the 3rd column, 3rd row. I would reorder it like this: /-- for new players --\ /-- More exp players --\ \/ \/ \/ \/ ABOUT CONTINUUM | ART & SCREENSHOTS | SSCENTRAL NEWS | SPECIAL FEATURES FILE DOWNLOADS | ZONE INFORMATION | SSFORUM NETWORK | PLAYER QUOTES TECHNICAL SUPPORT | GUIDE / TIPS & TRICKS | SQUAD CENTRAL | SCORES & STATS Art & Screenshots = related to about continuum, so next to it Zone information = something you need after downloading, so next to it Guide / Tips & Tricks = the last option in the section for new players because people usually read the guide for tips & tricks after getting a taste of the game 3rd + 4th column are identical to 1st column and 4th column in current menu What do you think? P.S. Remove those ugly W3C buttons! Nobody cares if it's XHTML/CSS validated as long as it works
»Ceiu Posted August 28, 2007 Report Posted August 28, 2007 I certainly care that it validates. It tells me that if I switch browsers, there's a very good chance the page will still work (though this would be a tad more accurate if it weren't in transitional (aka quirks-mode)). Plus, it kinda gives us bragging rights that our site wasn't designed by freddy-frontpage; it's a sign that the site was somewhat professionally developed.
»CypherJF Posted August 28, 2007 Report Posted August 28, 2007 I'd switch them out with the blog-style buttons that look like this - http://cypherjf.sscentral.com/softview/logos/blog_w3c-xhtml.png http://cypherjf.sscentral.com/softview/logos/blog_w3c-css.png.
PoLiX Posted August 28, 2007 Author Report Posted August 28, 2007 Don't worry bout the menu, there is other ways the pages will take care of it.
PoLiX Posted August 30, 2007 Author Report Posted August 30, 2007 Got some more progress today, but TT needed some help with something for his work, so I had to take a bit and do that. Just now got it done, (7:50pm PST), and he went to bed like an hr ago, but meh. Probably did more than he expected too, but it should help him. So now, I'll get back to it. ------------------------------ I got the 3 top boxes into html/sliced up, and changed the W3C icons to Cypher's. Funny enough, match into the design a lot, and look a lot better. I'll probably upload an update once I fix a few bugs.
Smong Posted September 4, 2007 Report Posted September 4, 2007 Even if the menu is overengineered does it really matter? I thought this site would be like a central portal for existing players. New players should be told about getcontinuum.com since it has a massive download button. Just one small issue with that, sscentral.com is shorter than getcontinuum.com so it is more likely to fit into one of those 88x31 buttons. Edit: Old button I found, which is a "non-standard" 100x35 size:http://toktok.sscentral.com/images/sscentral.png
PoLiX Posted September 5, 2007 Author Report Posted September 5, 2007 100x35 was a ss website standard.. The issue lately, I've been job hunting like mad, so time has become a bit limited again. I have 3 days off coming up, so spend a lot of time then. Currently working on applying for a job at Google Inc actually, just not sure what pathway to take, but the lady on the phone was nice and gave me some ideas, so may continue working with them to figure a good place to sit. But I have a good chance at getting a job there if I really pursue it, or so I'm told. Anyways, I'll keep you guys updated...
CreatiX Posted September 5, 2007 Report Posted September 5, 2007 looks good, what launch date do you estimate?
PoLiX Posted September 5, 2007 Author Report Posted September 5, 2007 I have Thurs, Fri, and Sat off... hoping to make a lot of progress than. Also Mon & Tues, and Thurs & Fri next week. Although may pick of some hours at the store, since the warehouse is low on hours.
PoLiX Posted September 6, 2007 Author Report Posted September 6, 2007 http://polix.sscentral.com Any ideas on the left and right highlight boxes? (yes, I do plan to dress them up a bit more to make em stand out. Header images most likely) And any new ideas for the right side area of the site? Other than the box seen here: http://www.m33p.de/sscnew.jpg, or ideas on what to do with it? Would be great... Thanks. Oh, and anyone who wants to make category images for the news, lemme know. Asked Larrythehamster, but seems he is busy as !@#$%^&* or something, and I need some more of em, or even a new style, either or. Just needs to have the silver border the current 2 have so it fits into the site right.
