Smong Posted August 11, 2007 Report Posted August 11, 2007 I was considering getting this game since I like Rainbow Six Raven Shield, but I've decided not to after playing the demo. The most annoying part of all, the gun sights. The sights do not point where the bullets will go, some even point towards the ground. Bullets always go to the center of the screen, I ended up dangling a cable vertically over my monitor so I could aim. The sights are also animated and sway continuously, the animation doesn't loop correctly. The sniper sights are in two parts, the black border and some crosshairs, they animate out of sync, like in different directions. I don't care if it's been fixed in retail, I didn't see any patches for the demo. If I remember correctly Epic did release patches for the UT demo so it's not unheard of. Comparison to Raven Shield:- You can't switch between team members like in Raven Shield, so if you die and your squad is still alive it's game over (if they die you can keep going).- No radial menu, giving commands is harder.- Graphically some more eye candy, but has to be balanced with resolution.- Missions are slightly different, you are given an initial objective and then more as you go along. So there's no pre-mission planning, no waypoints to follow etc, I guess this what they call a "more open" game? For a single player game this isn't my type of style.- Still retains standing/crouch/prone, loadout chooser, selective fire modes (semi/burst/fullauto), a squad to help you, good quality maps. Any suggestions for a tactical FPS to try out? I don't have Pixel Shader 3.0 so don't suggest any games that require that (I know Lost Planet does). The rest of my "review" if you care:Graphically it's ok, I had to use a really low res to get a decent fps. There are some pointless special effects like leaves falling from trees and branches waving, also grenades have a distortion effect where they blow up, like some kind of heat haze. There are also possibly shadows and HDR and you can see your legs if you look down. I think there might have been some advanced settings that were hidden away, but I didn't try them. If you crouch you can't look all the way up, and if you're too close to a wall you can still shoot but aren't allowed to bring your sights up. The default controls aren't too good, especially over dependance on the scroll wheel/third mouse button. Commanding your squad members is near useless, if you tell them to move somewhere they move too far ahead and step into enemy view. I tried commanding my squad to shoot some enemies, it didn't work, they just stood where they were. At one point a squad member stepped infront of me as I was setting up a shot on an enemy. A command rose / radial menu / what ever you want to call it isn't used in this game, instead you have to middle click, then use the scroll wheel, then middle click again. And if you accidentally middle click the menu won't close until you select an option. You also have to hold F and then scroll to change weapons. Attempting to command via the tab overview map (looks like a battlefield series clone) is very annoying, all the commands are at the bottom of the screen, and if you move the mouse near the edge it scrolls. So if you scroll over the target zone, then select a squad member, then select an action, by that time the map has scrolled away and you have to move it back again. Another thing cloned from battlefield is when you run you can't shoot and the 1st person weapon is drawn a little lower. At the mission start you can't skip the briefing, so you have to wait for the mission to load (preloader is extremely boring, just a spinning thing, they should consider adding tetris or something) then you have to sit through a video briefing which only appears in the top right of the screen. What's more is it keeps auto saving which freezes the game for a few seconds.
Shran Posted August 20, 2007 Report Posted August 20, 2007 The smart choice would be to download GRAW 2 Multiplayer Demo on Live and play that online. It's actually really fun and I've heard many people talking about how good the full game is. I'd consider getting GRAW 2 instead if you are planning on buying a piece of that franchise.
Smong Posted August 25, 2007 Author Report Posted August 25, 2007 Hmm, I might try the GRAW2 demo, but I didn't get a good impression from the first one (I'll get it on PC I don't have an xbox).
Shran Posted August 27, 2007 Report Posted August 27, 2007 Oh I see. That kinda hurts you demo-wise. Lol! Well you should check out http://www.gamefaqs.com and check out the reviews on the games there. That site always helped me when in doubt. Hope that helps!
Incomplete Posted August 28, 2007 Report Posted August 28, 2007 I havent played Raven Shield but I prefer GRAW over Las Vegas. Me and a few buddies from work sometimes go on there. We try and defend a base for 15 minutes with the enemies on difficult and with as many enemies as you can get. It's a good laugh. As for the bullets not shooting straight, thats something I only experience very slightly on xbox Live probably due to my conection. Your experience with GRAW sounds bad. Maybe you should look up the xbox 360 one. Also checkout clips on youtube. Heres a list of some FPS that are coming out (I dont know what specs they need, some of these may not even be coming out on the PC) BioshockMedal Of Honour AirbourneHour Of VictoryHalo 3Dark MessiahCall Of Duty 4
Shran Posted August 28, 2007 Report Posted August 28, 2007 (edited) Bioshock confirmed for PC so far. I doubt Halo 3 will be available for the PC for the next 2 or so years. Always seems to be a couple year gap before a Halo game is ported. The rest, I don't know. Edited August 28, 2007 by Shran
Smong Posted August 31, 2007 Author Report Posted August 31, 2007 I saw a GRAW2 review and I think I'm going to stay well clear of this.
