PoLiX Posted July 31, 2007 Report Posted July 31, 2007 So a few weeks ago, joe (swift) and myself decided to buy a VPS. Both of us have a lot of side projects, and would feel bad putting everything on TT's server. We decided to get a VPS from JaguarPC, good reviews, tons of good feedback, them and LiquidWeb we're rated the top 2 from everything I saw. JaguarPC opened a bunch of new servers, and had a huge discount to promote them, I took them. I got the server ready, and figured SSForum would be a great live environment to throw at it, since we get a lot of traffic here, and IPB is very consuming on the server at times. Well, it'd seem the Interworx control panel never got fully installed correctly, and I think it is also !@#$%^&*in the rest of the server up. I have all the correct ports open, but if I turn on the firewall, FTP dies. Funny enough, it worked just fine, just one night didn't, and I found when I turned off the firewall, all worked fine. No ports had been touched in a week atleast. Also it'd seem a lot of php isn't parsing correctly, and I've searched the entire php.ini, found no odd settings. I am continuously getting e-mails from my control panel saying the cron is messing up the daily job it runs, although I have not gotten that today yet, oddly. The final straw has now come though. Last night, I went to login to my control panel, and it said my license was invalid. E-Mailed their tech support, and they got on it asap, even set my ticket to emergency. They got it working again, sweet. Now, I logged in about 10mins ago: **WARNING** This control panel license will expire in: 6 hours 29 minutes 5 seconds. Funny enough, that would be around the same time I logged in yesterday, and found the control panel license "Invalid". I have never heard anything like this about the Interworx control panel, and I even told them the install seemed bugged, but they just fixed my license supposively, and said all looked fine. I have ran servers self-managed, and with so much management, they barely give you ssh, and neither have given me so many issues setting anything up, or given so many odd faults. The plan right now is to get the files from forums.sscentral.com, and any new uploads moved to ssforum.net on TT's server. Than I will get the software there to connect to the db here, and update the dns. I will however kill uploads/attachments, so we don't lose any until the forum is moved. So in other words, if all goes right, you shouldn't even notice the site has moved. I am not saying JaguarPC is bad, their tech support is great, but that I just got a bad install of my control panel, and it seems they don't want to believe so. I just don't have the money for a dedicated server right now, and a shared is just so limiting to what I'd like to do. I guess I'll have to discuss a few things with TT and see what we can come up with. I work a short shift just driving the box trucks back and forth today (1pm - 6pm PST), and after that, I will begin work on this issue. Sorry guys, didn't go as we had planned it sadly. All for now.
Dav Posted August 1, 2007 Report Posted August 1, 2007 so you going to tell them where they can stick their VPS or just wait for them to get their act together?
Testtube Posted August 1, 2007 Report Posted August 1, 2007 No offense polix but this was a bad move I have used Jaguar before and hey are horrid even for the price. While i can see your view points with the control panel. Cpanel is still the industry leader Since you have been on my box (to my knowledge) You have had 0 issues that affected the website The speed has been much better than what you guys had before. If it isnt broke dont fix it. After all i am not charging you or the community for any of the space or bandwidth used. I see no reason to switch stuff around unless you like fixing !@#$%^&* after moving. This is all of course your choice But didnt know you wasnt happy on a server that hasnt had any noticiable downtime this year. If you need more resources all you had to do was speak up keep in touch. The only thing i was against doing was moving additional people over to my server that (used to be paying for service) and now getting a free ride. on my expense Its fine if its for the community but if you swift/syrus want additional resources to host side projects You can do so with me I was just not wanting to do it for free. Of course i wont charge what the going rate is but anything to help cover the costs of keeping a sever of this scale up is a plus. I have had this particular server up for a very long time and there are no plans of it going anywhere. It would also make more sense to keep everything in house as if you did plan to put other !@#$%^&* on my box and did decide to help financially You would be helping the community out by giving back to a server thats donating Instead of giving out even more money to some other company that has nothing to do with the community Let me know what you decide to do have a good one.
PoLiX Posted August 1, 2007 Author Report Posted August 1, 2007 Well, our projects are hosted free by TWSites, but their server kept giving us so many bugs with SSCentral and the Forums, we had to move them. Now it feels re!@#$%^&*ed leaving them there, because they are hosted for free, for what was originally meant for the sites. Yes, we we're allowed to stay on free when we told em we we're going to move, and DoCk> said to stay for free since we pretty much funded the start of TWSites.com (Buying 2 of the biggest packages combined into 1) and so we did. Swift has 2 or 3 sites on there, 2 of which are semi-affiliated with this game, and I myself have 1 for my brother on there, not affiliated with the game, amongst other planned future projects. If you don't mind us moving those, then I'll just do that, but I just hate taking free resources that we're meant for another purpose.
»Swift Posted August 7, 2007 Report Posted August 7, 2007 Updated the DNS today after I had a chance to sit down here in South Korea to do it.
