I think it is almost impossible to get a raise. I mean, unless you are a superstar, why does any company have any reason to give me more than the annual crappy 2% raise? I'm so foolish for going into a job knowing that I'm going to get paid lower than what I want but thinking and hoping that I'll get a raise in 90 days. That's just absurd!

I never need a raise. I get paid about 170 a day and when I take over the office in a few years I'm going to have a $122,000 Salary.

prove that you have grown within the company / organization and that you show future improvements to thus not only increase revenue but work ethic. Not only amongst yourself but in others if you work with, or have people below you.

With that said, I've been raised from 65k to 85k within 6 months...its possible, you need to strive for perfection and give your employer reason to do so smile.gif

its like me, i probably can get a better job, but i dont, because of the benefits you receive

its like asking why would someone work for $6 or $7 an hour as a maid, when you could go be a cashier for $9/hr

I was saying if he lookes now, that may have been the best job at the time and/or on par or better payed then other jobs.

As companies give raises and grow that can all change over a short time.

Threaten to leave for a job with a better salary, provided you have the backup of somewhere to go this may work. If they say no then leave and go to a better job.

I dont think that threatening for a raise is the right approach. What happens if they give in and give you the raise - you earned it on threats which puts you at direct odds with management. This is exactly what union employees do and in my mind that is the wrong way to keep a job. Of course, I'd prefer to see most unions be broken and abolished but that's a different story.

Hmm, that was a very unusual response. My mother isn't a union so I'm not sure why she was involved here? Have you been thinking about my mother? Do you know what she looks like? Perhaps there is something I don't know about you two - but either way, I have one thing to say....

I've been after a raise for the last two years.

You see, I work for a freight train company which used to be owned by the government once upon a time. At that time, employees could undertake as many training courses as they could, and upon completion they would move up a pay level for the knowledge they had attained.

Since being privatised though, those employees still retain the pay level they had aquired, but it was made exceedingly difficult for newer employees such as myself to go up a pay level due to industrial reforms, changes in classification, and tightarse management who would rather save the dollars in their budget to build their own end-of-year bonus.

So as it stands, I am not only as competant as the other guys in my office, but have even demonstrated certain skills that even my supvervisor does not have. I even do his job when he is on annual leave. Yet I remain on the lowest paid level in the company. I could be making another 20K atop what I already earn if they would just match me to the same level as my immediate collegues.

Ok, I sympathize with your struggles because that seems to be very much similar to my situation. What angers me is that a salary should not be weighted on cost cutting measures - doing so may be indicative of a failing company. When a company picks up new business, there is normally going to be more money available to spread around but the management suck it all up in leaps and bounds.

I'm in the IT field so naturally I have a high level of mobiliity but I like the people I work with. I've found that making myself marketable and keeping an updated resume is a great idea.
