PoLiX Posted July 19, 2007 Report Posted July 19, 2007 1. I think the spamming has to do honestly, with all the attacks on SSCentral.com. It'd seem we have been having all sorts of attacks, hack attempts, and DoSs attempts (one that was VERY close to taking the server down) lately. Around this same time, we have had tons of spam members joining left and right. To the point I have even debated doing admin verification of new members (won't, but debated). 2. Honestly, it is what most people know these forums as. Yes, I was able to boost traffic as Forums.SSCentral.com and get a lot of people here, but most members still just type http://www.ssforum.net to get here. 3. Mod_Rewrite would allow me to do a lot of nice things for zone forums. IE: masking, or making a shorter url to their forums, etc. Rather than just a redirect. 4. It feels like a waste trying to keep a domain alive just to have it redirect. We lose it, we lose the menu redirects on continuum, all the links around ss, and someone could take it, and do some malicious things with it to unknowing players. Opinions?
»freakmonger Posted July 19, 2007 Report Posted July 19, 2007 on #4, we can't afford to lose the domain
PoLiX Posted July 19, 2007 Author Report Posted July 19, 2007 I know we just had a poll about this, but moving it to general. I think these reasons give a bit more insight on my thoughts lately. Moved: Hidden Lounge -> General
rootbear75 Posted July 19, 2007 Report Posted July 19, 2007 (edited) i dont mind if you do that, but if you do, make forums.sscentral.com redirect to ssforum.net cause i always type in forums.sscentral.com when im out of my usual areas... Edited July 19, 2007 by rootbear75
PoLiX Posted July 19, 2007 Author Report Posted July 19, 2007 Oh... and to Register, you have to do Captcha, Tell how many ships in Subspace/Continuum, and E-mail Verification... So we know the 2-3 spam accounts we run into daily, are people, not bots.

»1587200 Posted July 19, 2007 Report Posted July 19, 2007 I'm thinking the traffic generated by the digg posts, as well as escapist article are what's bringing in the unwanted traffic. I'm doing my best to keep in touch with the abuse departments of those who own the IP's of the sites which are being spammed, so we'll see what happens.
»doc flabby Posted July 19, 2007 Report Posted July 19, 2007 #4 ftw i type www.ssforum.net to access the forum. I like the new style tho, with it being part of sscentral, keep it as both It feels more like part of a big site. changing the name, unfortunately won't reduce the spam. Sadly all these DDOS,hack and spam attacks are now the NORM for many websites....
Russky Posted July 19, 2007 Report Posted July 19, 2007 Depends on how much it costs if it is too much money for you I am sure people could 'google' and learn!
PoLiX Posted July 19, 2007 Author Report Posted July 19, 2007 #4 ftw i type www.ssforum.net to access the forum. I like the new style tho, with it being part of sscentral, keep it as both It feels more like part of a big site. changing the name, unfortunately won't reduce the spam. Sadly all these DDOS,hack and spam attacks are now the NORM for many websites....Well, the thing is, SSForum.net is still on the twsites account hosting a couple of sites. No issues there. I have a server using a sscentral.com subdomain for a domain alias and all, and recently it itself was being hit by traffic, spam, and hack attempts. The firewall log is pages long. Now, I'm not 100% sure if it is continuuing on the main domain, TT hasn't imed me about it anymore. But the bot spam is continuuing. So it is all in relation to the sscentral.com domain itself. The new style is nice, yes, but what is the point if everyone is typing www.ssforum.net anyways. Literally, 9/10 people I talk to, type www.ssforum.net.
Animate Dreams Posted July 20, 2007 Report Posted July 20, 2007 Is there really an issue with using both? If it's cost, domain names cost just a few bucks a year to keep up... you could have an annual donation drive to raise the 5$. I bet it wouldn't be hard.
Incomplete Posted July 20, 2007 Report Posted July 20, 2007 Doesn't make a difference to me as I use the link from 17ths website. SSForum would be easier to remember anyway.
Dav Posted July 20, 2007 Report Posted July 20, 2007 I have just started making a habit of typing http://forums.sscentral.com, but I still use www.ssforum.net if I'm feeling lazy. To a lot of the long term members it will always be ssforum.
Incomplete Posted July 20, 2007 Report Posted July 20, 2007 I call this SSForum anyway. Anyone else I have invited to here also call it SSForum
»D1st0rt Posted July 22, 2007 Report Posted July 22, 2007 It used to matter, but now I have "ssf" bound as a firefox keyword
»Maverick Posted July 22, 2007 Report Posted July 22, 2007 This will always be SSForum, it's so easy to remember and it's what it is.
Cancer+ Posted July 23, 2007 Report Posted July 23, 2007 I'm with SSForum. I don't care if it is a poll or not, I choose SSForum.
Dav Posted July 23, 2007 Report Posted July 23, 2007 I dont see how SScentral and SSforum is worse the SScentral and forums.sscentral. The names are similr and work well together IMO with SSforum and SScentral
Delic Posted July 23, 2007 Report Posted July 23, 2007 SSForum 4 Life O_o (Yes, I also agree that it should be SSForum)
PoLiX Posted July 23, 2007 Author Report Posted July 23, 2007 Later today, now that the DNS has updated, I will be moving the forums back to SSForum.net. I want to wait til a low time in activity to do it, and a time when I have some free time. Gotta go look at some apartments and a few houses today, but I will work on it once I get a chance to drop by my parents to use my computer. I don't have any of the stuff on my gf's laptop. And I have a slower upload speed here compared to home. Some updates coming: hyperspace.ssforum.net -> ssforum.net/hscomplex.ssforum.net -> ssforum.net/tcutzone.ssforum.net -> ssforum.net/utetc. etc. Going to try and REALLY manipulate mod_rewrite and the ipb software to make ssforum.net/hs/(topicid) to work all right, and to get the software to manipulate things right. But that will come in time, and is what I was hoping to do with the domain that I can't as easily with the subdomain. forums.sscentral.com/hs/topicid would just be soo long and stupid. This is only if HS would like this of course, and the other zones. So we'll see what happens. All for now.
