Some of this was discussed in the "chat log" topic, as well, but I figured it is important enough to separate into its own topic.

 

Currently, flags don't move around very much and are just used as a sort of "tool" to finish the game and cash in. This is bad in many ways, as outlined in the abovementioned topic. The other issue is that it is very easy for players such as myself to grab and run. It is very difficult to catch a runner - even tm mostly fails to catch me :huh:

 

My initial thought was that flag carriers should be slowed down. However, this will have side-effects. So, the topic of this topic is to think of ways that flags can become a constant part of the game, without changing the overall gameplay too much.

 

I'd like you to also comment on the slowdown-of-flaggers (or other handicap) method - what do you think are the side-effects and how important are they.

 

Are there other ways to prevent flaggers from running away easily? Can the bot help somehow?

so what your getting at is that the flagger should NOT be able to run away?

 

lets look at the negatives to a handicap for the flag carrier :

- dogfights: flags give you cooler looking bombs and bullets and makes dogfighting sortt of like an informal game of KING OF THE HILL where if you have the flags your the king and everyone else tries to kill you (what makes dogfighting not so boring)

- how can you make it more flag orientated if you punish people for having the flags???

 

Lets procede to the positives:

- no more ASSS running with the flags :( (please note that this rarely happens)

 

 

the only real way to make flags more game orientated is to have a style like extreme games where you need to actualy own the flags (not just neut them), and since we dont want to copy extreme games due to obvious reasons i guess someone needs to look harder for a way to make flags more game orientated

 

Which just so happend to spark a creative bubble

- what if flags made you 'elite' in which case it was worth the gamble to fight with flags since it made you so much stronger ; sure you could die while defending the rest of your flags and the enemy would snag a flag from you and give them the vantage power to steal the rest of the flags with their new found flag bonus power

... of course this would make flag running even more simple and anoying

 

then we look at the option of the bot helping

-what if the person holding 25 flags was penalized with a -1 HP as so they could not warp out of the base, so you would need to use 2 people to successfully transport all 25 flags out of the base ( or 3 people +.. ) Im not sure if its posible to be penalized with -1 energy with all 25 flags but that would definetly work out

One suggestion to improve flagging in Devastation would be to increase the flag timer from 180 seconds (3 minutes) to 300 seconds (5 minutes). This will give the attackers more time to make enough progress in a base to potentially stop a win.

 

To help prevent run-winning, I suggest we make it so you can only drop flags inside bases (i.e. flags neutralize back to center if dropped outside of a base). This way, if you want to win, you're going to have to at least hold off an antied attack for the duration of the flag timer. It will also add the element of unpredictability that if you manage to push or repel an enemy right against a wall (or they foolishly choose to hide in a corner while waiting to win) the moment they are about to drop inside the base, you will still have a chance and the game may not be over.

not sure if this is possible in subgame, but you can try setting Flag:WinDelay (the amount of time between dropping the last flag and winning)

good idea TM, only being able to win inside of base would be ok.... but when people catch on wouldnt they just run away to another base?

 

and jowie, thats actualy an excelent idea , if person was running with flags about to win -but had followers trying to kill him - he drops the flags thinking he is hot !@#$%^&* about to steal the jp but someone pics up the flag during the windelay .. nice:D
