Medrona Park (precursor to Infopop) used to rule the market with UBB.

And back in the day, hosting was much more expensive and not all hosts supported SQL and perl, php, et cetera (which nowdays is more than a given) at economically viable prices to private users.

With UBB being simple CGI, which was always present at basic packages, and its DB being stored as ASCII it was the prefered choice over those which required SQL.

But they've lost it decades ago.

The so called uBB.threads (wwwthreads forum software which they aquired), which I never liked, was a crappy POS.

And the old UBB renamed to uBB.classic was being licensed at rates which didn't come to terms with its outdated service, which was now being surp!@#$%^&*ed by far by the likes of phpBB.

Lets not even mention all the security flaws...

IPB stracture is also a nightmare.

Ironically, most forum softwares are sophisticated enough as to have their forum DB converted to IPB, but to convert from IPB to another forum creates a host of trouble.

I used to like PhpBB a lot a long time ago, vBulletin was never all that great. Then I came to like IPB, more secure and better overall interface. So I'd prefer sticking with what I'm used to, unless you can convince me with a better skin than this one.

But my only con about this forum, is everytime I google something, and re-access the forum through google, I'm always stuck in linear mode. I hate linear so much, and changing back to standard mode is so unobvious (because can't be changed through "my account" settings) that I had to google it for 10 minutes to figure it out.

that second one was marked as Duplicate, so i suspect it was already reported.

Which one seems to have well design code? If I wanted to own one of these forums and make some features that work with it, I can use PHP for both, right? Who has the better software code base?

Yeah, both are written w/PHP. I've heard people say that vBull has the better archetecture and that Invision's is quite subpar in comparison. But Invision's is better than PHPBB from what I've heard as well.

Both vBulletin and IPB are better than phpBB... phpBB doesn't get enough money, I think :(
Yeah, when your product is free, and you can't even get people to donate, then I'm pretty sure it's time for a new project.

From my experience running large populated forums...

Yabb - POS

phpBB - has it's perks, like being free, but falls in comparison to the administration control of the top 2

uBB - the current stuff, useless. The old software, that was some sweet simple !@#$%^&*.

IPB - while it started free, the only reason we purchased it was who wanted to convert to vBulletin and pay, just pay and be done with. It has a lot of nice features, but lacks some of the user side perks phpBB and vb have.

vBulletin - The cousin you want to !@#$%^&* of current forum software. It isn't cheap to run, is VERY controllable, and has most features IPB and phpBB both have, and then some. The only downside to being so controllable and customizable... SO HARD TO SETUP. Once you have ALL the settings set, and everything together, it is a dream. But there is literally HUNDREDS of settings you'll want to customize, or need to to get it going smooth. But as I said, once all done, the forum is a dream to run and administrate. There is more mods in the history of vBulletin than the other 2 combined, and the code is very easy to read through. This is what you get when a company who has always charged for scripts codes a forum software. Not a free one, or one who went from free to charge.

If I had a choice, I'd fork out the cash to vBulletin. Cheaper, and better.
