PoLiX Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 I'll share my opinion later, curious to hear yours 1st.
L.C. Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 I think overall vBulletin is far greater than IP.Board. IP.Board might be just a bit more user friendly, but the difference should hardly be too much. The Sven Co-op community never seemed to have any problems with their copy of vBulletin (I've been in that community for atleast 5 years). When it comes to IP.Board, I literally always see some kind of problem with the boards popping up every once in a while and stuff. :S My primary reason for going to vBulletin over IP.Board if I were choosing for Jackpot SVS would be that vBulletin is simply better, less ugly, more professional, cleaner, optimal (this could be argued very easily, not something I want to go through ), etc. I found vBulletin very easy to use and a breeze, while delivering an all-around, quality, and professional spectrum of being a forum. My penny. :X
»1587200 Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 I've never used VBull from an administrative perspective, so I really can't say.
Chambahs Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 Add a "Wtf who cares?" and "Wtf is the difference?" poll options.
Gravitron Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 I've covered this so many times in great detail in so many previous arguments before, so excuse me if I'll just cut to the bottom line this time: vBulletin.
Samapico Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 Can anyone give a link to a forum that uses vBulletin?
»Maverick Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 I really hate that forum of Trench Wars. Mostly because when I read all topics in a specific forum, I go back to the home, refresh and the forums are still set as unread. This is something that vBulletin probably already solved since Trench Wars's forum hasn't been updated for .. like.. ages. I must say I like IPBoard's Web 2.0 features incl. ajax features. I don't like it for being massive in loading (you see it takes a while and notice it's heavy) though.
»1587200 Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 vBull also has incorporated ajax. If you want to see some updated vBull's, check out http://www.verticalsports.com/. All their forums use vBull, the largest being wrestlingforum.com which has 160,000+ members and 4.2 million threads and runs fine for the most part, with exception to the serach function, which is understandable w/a member base that large.
»Maverick Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 ah nice I've also put up a vBulletin v3.6.7 test forum at http://vbulletin.ss-network.net just for testing sake. I disabled any registration checks so it's quite easy to register and test out the forum. Test it out as much as you want. If you need administrator, let me know and I will make you admin there.
PoLiX Posted June 27, 2007 Author Report Posted June 27, 2007 IP.Boardhttp://forums.sscentral.com/ Benefits: Clean, lots of updates, we own a lifetime updates (no tech support) license (although if they ever go back to tech support updating, we'll have to pay for updates... so gay), trying to simplify skin making for users. Cons: No usergroups like phpBB or vBulletin. Pretty much vBulletin without a lot of features phpBB shares with them. Loads of bug upgrades. I have to admin people just to be able to give them power to control a usergroup, luckily I can limit their admin capabilities, but still a security threat. ------------------------------- vBulletinhttp://www.sscentral.com/vb/ Benefits: What SSForum originally was started with. Lots of zones use either phpBB or vBulletin, and both share a lot of common features/structures from my knowledge. Could give (multiple) people ownership of usergroups, and no longer have to worry about admin security breaches. Can still give limited admin control as needed though. Has a moderator control panel to more easily find a lot of the daily mod duties, ability to do announcements, etc. Same structure of forum view as IPB, but kind of more condensed, feals like 1 forum community, not all broken up. Cons: $165 for an owned license, not all that bad. Converting the database could cause some errors, but shouldn't be TOO bad. Have to get use to new software. ------------------------------- This is just mostly to gauge interest after recent discussions and such. I'd honestly love to go back to vBulletin as their admin section gave a lot more control over the forums than IPB does without hacks, and it allows for a lot more security with not having to give admin to zone forum owners (which without, forum admins would have to be on 24/7 for any issues with people being removed or added or what not).
»Maverick Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 Hm you bought a vBulletin license already or got that version illegally (like mine) ? I'd say it would be waste to throw away IPB now. (license-wise) Why has SSForum switched from vBulletin to IPB in the past ?
»1587200 Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 I'm so indifferent to this topic it's not even funny...I'll just go with whatever the community wants, and what's better for the site.
sil Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 I like how these forums look, but it sounds like the admin abilities of vBulletin are nice. If you can get vBulletin to look like how this forum is, then it would be good. Remember condensed can feel cramped as well which is the feeling I get from the few vBulletins I have seen.
CRe Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 I like IPB because its more secure and user friendly.
»1587200 Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 Another aspect to look at is how hard is it to update vBull? As in, do vBull updates typically break modifications and skins like IP.Board does? Why has SSForum switched from vBulletin to IPB in the past ?License issues. At the time IPB was free.
PoLiX Posted June 27, 2007 Author Report Posted June 27, 2007 I like IPB because its more secure and user friendly. Not when I have 6 people able to access the ACP outside of admins so they can control their forum usergroups...Hm you bought a vBulletin license already or got that version illegally (like mine) ? :)I'd say it would be waste to throw away IPB now. (license-wise)Why has SSForum switched from vBulletin to IPB in the past ?CybeRise sold Subspace.net to GodSpeedJam!!He Demanded Admin or he'd take our license and change the domain and report us. Cybe wasn't around, no way to confirm he had also gotten license with purchase. Our DB was so corrupted it popped up all sorts of errors all the time, so we changed to phpBB, and when the conversion lost tons of data, we just started over. That sucked, so went to IPB. This db we use now is actually a phpBB db converted to IPB.Another aspect to look at is how hard is it to update vBull? As in, do vBull updates typically break modifications and skins like IP.Board does? Why has SSForum switched from vBulletin to IPB in the past ?License issues. At the time IPB was free.vBulletin updates are typically minor, and unneeded for long amounts of time. And most their updates can be done by just modifying the files. They typically post a download with all the information on file changes, etc. IPB does the same, yes, but always modifies like 50 files+ per update, and it breaks everything anyways.uBB was the same way, and vBulletin has followed their nature with updates. IPB is VERY new compared to most major forum systems.
Shock Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 I'm against anything that isn't IPB. I know it has it's issues, but I think it's easy to use and has nice features. It also looks the best... vBulletin is ugly. I'm also with Syrus on this one. I've never seen the ACP of a vBulletin, so it'd be hard to judge from an administrator's standpoint.
Dav Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 I have to say I quite like IPB from a users point of view. I am surprised at the lack of group management though which I can see as being a big advantage.
Testtube Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 I personally prefer vbullitin. However i prefer Infopop forums over all that has been mentioned thus far.
PoLiX Posted June 27, 2007 Author Report Posted June 27, 2007 haha... you mean Groupee as they like to be called now? Was reading bout it on I think it was yaxay a few weeks back. Their software kind of got buggy and went downhill, so they became a Myspace/LiveJournal wannabe site that still puts out their software... Pretty sad in my eyes. I use to love their software, but than it just became so easy to hack into and such, it just got old.
PoLiX Posted June 28, 2007 Author Report Posted June 28, 2007 Anyone mind posting these to IPB for me? Bug 1: Moderating Groups do not have full and correct moderating powers. Cannot Full Edit closed topics, and Quick Edit dies on closed topics. Have to open to full edit. Bug 2: Replying too soon after own post with quotes, or fast replying too soon after own post kills NL2BR function. Makes all posts 1 line, no spaces either.
