The American Medical !@#$%^&*ociation will be debating whether to consider video game addiction a mental illness, which would then make 'sufferers' eligible for insurance for treatment. In the AP article it said some doctors believe the addiction can be compared to heroin in some cases. If this happens, are we going to find rehab centers for video gamers? I think this is just a crock. If someone is hooked on video games, it's probably their parents fault for overindulging them. What does everyone else think? Edited by Greased_Lightning

I know people who sit on myspace for 5+ hours at a time doing almost nothing. Crazy stuff. People who are addicted to video games, are just lazy. So maybe being lazy should be considered a mental illness

I never use MySpace or FaceBook. I have accounts but that was just to view a friend page cause they wanted me to see it.

How does it get additive? Use your own site you made with notepad (or gedit for Linux users) and buy your own domain.

I don't think they should offer it becuase then everyone at school says they have their own website and they think they have a domain.

.info domains were only .99 on godaddy.com not long ago.

Yes, I believe it's an addiction equal to some harder drugs.

You can't simply put it off as "being someones fault and not being responsible." That's not a category when defining addiction.

Do I think many people qualify for treatment because of it? No. An average gamer might play a video game everyday after work, but that doesn't cons!@#$%^&*ute as addiction. Not eating, frequent absense from school or work(on non patch days) and possible additional health issues would qualify you to be in the addiction category I'd think.

IE, Terry losing 15 pounds in a week because he plays wow 17 hours a day without eating needs help. Not jimmy who plays 5 hours a day after he's done with work. Jimmy is just bored.

It also depends upon the game. Most games flat out have no addictive capacity whatsoever. There are some that can be pretty bad however. If the AMA comes to decide that it is a mental disease, I'd agree.

If someone suffers from something for playing Subspace, they really can't sue anybody (except maybe PriitK, but I doubt it). My message to them: haha, tough luck buddy. Get outta here!

I don't think this community needs those kind of sue-happy, angry people around. :\

The kid that used to be my best friend spent an average of 14 hours a day playing FFXI while he was at school. He lost his job and dropped out of college, well got kicked out for never going to class and having a .5 gpa because of it.

Yes video games can be addictive.

Pretty much anything can be addictive in an extreme case, but that doesn't mean it should qualify for a disease. I could be addicted to watching flies get zapped by a bug zapper but I doubt I would get any money for it. Actually, to me that's pretty close to what a video game addiction would be like: bug zapper watching... flashing lights, sounds, smells, and funny !@#$%^&*. The only problem is that I'm not steering the zapper.... unless I get an extension cord... hmm... and the squirrel could be like the end of level big bad guy. Sweet. I've invented a new game! Oh wait, off topic. Uhm, yeah... uhh... video game addiction not a disease, just an excuse for laziness.

I'm gonna get me a bug zapper and a case!

Is this addiction?

My brother, plays FF11 every chance he gets. Sometimes even misses work just to party with friends. While at work, all he talks about is how he can't wait to get home to get these new boots or level his thief.

Is he just a nerd, or is he addicted?

if a game leads your life (meaning you prefer to play that game rather doing anything else, even stuff you had to do like work), then you're addicted to it.

So yeah, it should be considered harmful

of course video games are addicting, usually to those who dont really have a social life in school because they are treated poorly for their high IQ... !@#$%^&* americans, so they find sanctuary playing online games such as wow, where there is no judgement , except on your gaming skills:P

im sure we've all been addicted to a game in our life time, others just take it far more serious, so yes it is a medical condition

all the WoW nerds are gonna be happy AMA is paying for there WoW membership each month blum.gif

Is playing football all the time a mental health disease? Football could be considered detrimental to academic endevours. People play football and play computer games because they ENJOY it. The only way to classify it as a disease is if the time spent on the activity is physically beyond your control. There are plenty of psychological reasons for computer game addiction though, and these should be covered in a counselling session; although at no time should the addiction be portrayed as wrong/damaging, only the reasons for the addiction should be covered in order for the addicted individual to understand him/herself. If playing video games ruins your life it is addicting. It is proven that pot is mentally addicting, yet has no physical addictive properties, yet that is considered a medical addiction. You can be medically addicted to sex. I mean I can keep going. There are tons of things that are not physically addictive, but we become medically mentally addicted to.

In the football example, if you do nothing but play football, someone could consider you addicted. But then you would become very good, dare I say amazing at football. Then you could play something like arena football, make over 60k a year, and turn your "addiction" into a career.

I don't think addictions, in any form should be considered a mental health disease, but I do think there should be clinics open to help them.

Football = ACTIVE SPORT

Gaming = SIT ON LAZY !@#$%^&* CHAIR AND RUIN YOUR EYES

big difference here, and of course marijuanna is mentally addictive, anyone who smokes marijuanna, and wants to do it again, is obviously addicted:P WE ALL KNOW HOW GREAT MARIJUANNA IS.

BTW. Some mental addictions can be worse than physical addictions, like that saying, mind over matter.
