Shock Posted June 13, 2007 Report Posted June 13, 2007 Well, here's what you do. Turn on your computer, throw the Windows XP CD in and restart. REPAIR. It will not tell you that you are missing a file if you are truly booting from the CD. Change the boot sequence order in your BIOS to CD.
Emblazon Posted June 13, 2007 Author Report Posted June 13, 2007 Read the post again, I've already done that. It starts the setup, but eventually errors out with vague error code message stating that ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded. I know how to boot from a CD, so something else is wrong.
Shock Posted June 13, 2007 Report Posted June 13, 2007 Here, I found this on Google. !@#$%^&*o, If you do a repair installation of Windows (XP?), you won't have to re-install any of your apps. However, you will have to install all of your windows hotfixes and updates. You shouldn't have to do a repair install, however. You can use the Recovery Console on your Windows CD . Just follow the instructions at the above link. Once at the command prompt, type in the following commands: Edited: cd c:\windows\system32 copy "..\driver cache\i386\ntoskrnl.exe" If prompted to overwite the existing file, type y and enter. If you receive a file not found error, make sure that the path in the copy command is correct. If it is correct and you still receive the error, then try the following commands: cd "c:\windows\driver cache\i386" expand sp1.cab -F:ntoskrnl.exe c:\windows\system32 Again, if you are prompted to overwrite the file, type y and then enter. Also, if your OS is installed on a par!@#$%^&*ion/drive other than C:, then replace any occurance of C: with the correct letter. (D: for example). Replace any occurence of 'windows' with what is appropriate for your system. (winnt for example) Reboot. Your system should start up normally.

candygirl Posted June 14, 2007 Report Posted June 14, 2007 use the Recovery Console on the XP cd and after you fix you comp, install the Recovery Console on the comp, so you dont need the CD... also, heres a solution: copy the missing file over tell me how he can do this when this computer will not start?
Samapico Posted June 14, 2007 Report Posted June 14, 2007 gotta love how everyone give the obvious 'solution' ... The problem is HOW TO do it when there's no way to even see a command line prompt
Incomplete Posted June 14, 2007 Report Posted June 14, 2007 Issue: NTOSKRNL.EXE is missing or corrupt. Related errors: Below is a listing of the full error message that may be related to this error. Windows NT could not start because the below file is missing or corrupt: C:\Winnt\System32\Ntoskrnl.exe Cause: 1. Keyboard issue 2. Miscellaneous corruption 3. Corrupt boot.ini file. 4. Missing boot.ini file. 5. Missing or corrupt ntoskrnl.exe file. 6. Windows NT installed on a par!@#$%^&*ion bigger then 7.8GB 7. Corrupted hard disk drive or severely corrupted Windows. Solution:Keyboard issue This issue has also been known to be caused by a short in the ground wire in the keyboard cable. Make sure this is not the cause of your error by replacing the keyboard with a different keyboard or simply just disconnecting the keyboard from the computer. Miscellaneous corruption Before trying any of the below recommendations it's recommend that you attempt to load the last known good configuration. Additional information about doing this can be found on do!@#$%^&*ent CH000626. Corrupt boot.ini file This issue is often caused when the boot.ini is missing or improperly configured. This issue often arises after a user has recently added or removed an operating system on the computer or added or removed hard disk drives in the computer. Make sure the line pointing to the operating system and it's drive and par!@#$%^&*ion is properly configured in the [boot loader] and [operating systems] section. Additional information about boot.ini can be found on do!@#$%^&*ent CH000492. Missing boot.ini file Microsoft Windows XP users: If the boot.ini is severely corrupted or missing a user running Microsoft Windows XP can rebuild the boot.ini to resolve this issue. Additional information about rebuilding the boot.ini can be found on do!@#$%^&*ent CH000648. Microsoft Windows NT and Windows 2000 users: To restore the original boot.ini file in Microsoft Windows NT or Windows 2000 you will need an ERD and follow the below steps. If you do not have an ERD you will be unable to follow these steps. 1. Boot the computer with your Windows NT three setup diskettes or the Windows 2000 setup disc. 2. In the setup menu, type R to start the repair. 3. When prompted for the ERD diskette insert the diskette and inspect the startup environment. Missing or corrupt ntoskrnl.exe file If the ntoskrnl.exe file is corrupt or missing this can also generate the error. To restore this file follow the below steps. 1. Insert the Microsoft Windows XP CD. Note: If you have a recovery CD or a restore CD and not a Microsoft Windows XP CD it is likely the below steps will not resolve your issue. 2. Reboot the computer, as the computer is starting you should see a message to press any key to boot from the CD. When you see this message press any key. 3. In the Microsoft Windows XP setup menu press the R key to enter the recovery console. 4. Select the operating system you wish to fix, and then enter the administrator password. 5. Type expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32 6. You will then be prompted if you wish to overwrite the file type Y and press enter to overwrite the file. 7. Type exit to reboot the computer. Windows NT installed on a par!@#$%^&*ion bigger then 7.8GB If you are running Microsoft windows NT 4.0 on a par!@#$%^&*ion larger than 7.8GB this issue can occur if the boot files are located outside this limitation. When this error occurs your computer will have the error message as shown below. OS Loader v4.01 Disk I/O error status=00000001 Windows NT could not start because the below file is missing or corrupt: winnt\system32\Ntoskrnl.exe Please reinstall a copy of the above file. If your system par!@#$%^&*ion is larger than 7.8GB you will need to delete the par!@#$%^&*ion and recreate the par!@#$%^&*ion to 7.8GB or less. Additional information about this issue can be found on Microsoft KB Q224526. Corrupted hard disk drive or severely corrupted Windows Attempt to check the hard disk drive for any errors by running the chkdsk error. To do this follow the below steps. 5. Once at the recovery console type chkdsk /r 6. Once completed type exit and see if issue is resolved. If after trying all of the above steps you are still encountering the same issue it's likely that Windows is severely corrupted and it is recommended you attempt to reinstall Windows. Additional information about erasing the computer and starting over can be found on do!@#$%^&*ent CH000186. Finally, if during the Windows installation you encounter errors it's likely that your hard disk drive is bad. Source: Computer Hope

Emblazon Posted June 15, 2007 Author Report Posted June 15, 2007 I'll be gone all weekend, but I'm going to make a windows 98 boot disk cd-rom (since the problem laptop doesnt have a floppy drive but my pc does) and try that next week. I'll post if my results when I can. I found a site that explains how to make the cd-rom pretty easily with the right software. http://www.geocities.com/salamand0s/ultra.html
Shock Posted June 15, 2007 Report Posted June 15, 2007 I'm telling you, it's most likely a hardware problem. You may get a temporary fix, however, it will !@#$%^&* itself again.
rootbear75 Posted June 18, 2007 Report Posted June 18, 2007 (edited) the 98 cd is the best tool to have in your toolbox for PCscause it runs a tiny version of DOS you can use to copy files over, delete, fdisk, etc.... uh, i actually don't think that'll work, because it boots up with a "LOAD CD SUPPORT" "DON'T LOAD CD SUPPORT" optionmight... might not.. dunnoalways booted it off of a floppy EDIT: lemme know how it turns out... Incomplete Posted June 24, 2007 Report Posted June 24, 2007 Ignore Tex, he's an annoying come stain. The info I posted didnt help Emblazon?
Emblazon Posted June 26, 2007 Author Report Posted June 26, 2007 1. Keyboard issue - Laptop keyboard.. 2. Miscellaneous corruption - Tried last known good configuration, didn't help. 3. Corrupt boot.ini file. - File exists and is not corrupt 4. Missing boot.ini file. - File exists and is not corrupt 5. Missing or corrupt ntoskrnl.exe file. - This is the problem. Solution does not work because the CD will not run, reasons posted above. 6. Windows NT installed on a par!@#$%^&*ion bigger then 7.8GB - ? 7. Corrupted hard disk drive or severely corrupted Windows. - CD will not run, reasons posted above. I have ordered a new ram stick, but it did not resolve the issue. Next plan is to take it to a repair guy maybe.. or I'll just make my brother wait til he buys a new computer, until then he can just use my old laptop. But surely there is a solution to this.
sil Posted June 26, 2007 Report Posted June 26, 2007 Did you try installing a linux distro to dual boot and fix it that way?
Emblazon Posted June 27, 2007 Author Report Posted June 27, 2007 i can try that if you can explain how to. im not much of a linux guy really.
sil Posted June 28, 2007 Report Posted June 28, 2007 (edited) Prolly the best to use is going to be Knoppix. You can have a Knoppix Live CD in which nothing will need to be installed. It will load and run the OS from that CD. http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html <--official sitehttp://www.knoppix.net/ <--resource site for users and such You should be able to get the download off of either of those sites. The thing I am not sure about is replacing files. It's trivial to look at, copy, and use files in this way since you'll have access to the Windows par!@#$%^&*ion, but I am not sure how replacing files will work. The install and use of should also be pretty simple. It's not something I have done recently at all. You might look at the FAQs on those two sites. If not, I am sure there are some more linux oriented people here than me. Edited June 28, 2007 by sil
