»1587200 Posted June 12, 2007 Report Posted June 12, 2007 http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19191611/http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,280993,00.html In short, Bush wants to legalize all the current 12 million illegal border jumpers from Mexico, saying that legalizing them is the first step in enforcing our border. *read the articles for the full stories* Questions:1) Would granting citizenship to 12 million illegal immigrants be the first step in securing our borders? Or is the USA sending a message saying, "Jump the border and hide from the government long enough, and they'll make you legal"? 2) Would legalizing 12 million illegals help, hurt or have no impact on the current US work force? Why? Personally...this is going to be such a huge issue at the next election it's not even funny. If Bush gets this bill passed, then the Republicans have 12 million more votes for the next election. As far as my questions...1) No, the first step would be to send all 12 million of them back, and keep them out. Yes we are sending that message with this bill. We're also sending the message that votes are more important than our border and our current US population. At the risk of sounding like a bigot, I think we need to completely shut down our borders and take care of our own tired, hungry and hurting people before we start worrying about the rest of the world again.2) Possibly hurt. We already pay for the benifits and taxes on the current illegals. The only adverse effect it would have on the work force is that minimum wage could be lowered, and there'd still be people willing to work for it. Your thoughs? I think Bush found an old stash of coke and started powdering his nose again. After this second term, I'm really pissed that I actually voted for this guy. Then again, the only other option was Kerry, so I went for the lesser of two evils.
Aileron Posted June 12, 2007 Report Posted June 12, 2007 Keep in mind that Bush is going back to Texas in a couple years. He can't take a tough stance on illegal immigration because immigrants have a lot of power down there.
rootbear75 Posted June 12, 2007 Report Posted June 12, 2007 1) SEND EM BACK! They broke the law, and they deserve what they got.2) No Impact. They already work, so whats the point?
Confess Posted June 15, 2007 Report Posted June 15, 2007 My thought is this: Why not fix the border FIRST, then talk about legallizing the illegal immigrants?
AstroProdigy Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 Send back 11 million people to a country that can't support them and you'll have Mexico destabilized and much bigger problems will follow. Besides I thought the US was a nation of immigrants? M!@#$%^&* immigration has happened many times. Why not help Mexico modernize as fast as possible so there's no longer a reason for m!@#$%^&* immigration? Sending 11 million people back will not only be extremely difficult, but would likely destabilize the region and create even more illegal immigration. What are we going to do then? Genocide? Conservatives never bother to think of the repercussions of their actions on others do they?
