alright, this was taken from DK's topic on the main spread, but I figure for more discussion, it is best suited here. please post any responses/reactions and I will address them in due time:

if anyone even cares or still remotely knows me, awesome. but I've really backed away from this zone in recent months. the cause is for reasons similar to dk's complaints.

regardless, I am aware this is a work in progress, and I know that HS will never be what it was 2 years ago, but at some point we need someone removed from the meticulous improvements being implemented and ask him/herself: Is this really good for the zone? The situation reminds me of Frankenstein (the book, not the comedy by Mel Brooks), in which science's endeavors render it possible for man to be cloned, but when he is, it brings nothing beneficial to society.

so it is in HS at the present state. yes, I really do think it's awesome that ASSS has made it possible for variables of ships to be edited to degrees that a normal server could not achieve. but is it really necessary to have? the only thing that is perpetuating the selling of these ship and bomb armors is the fact that all the "skilled" people (let's come to terms here, the people who play the most and form friendships while doing so) buy them and hold advantage over the casual player.

and no, as some analytical people who may find one point they disagree with in this post and isolate their retort based on it, it is not only limited to bomb armor. while the prospect of customization in general is awesome - it makes the zone what it is - too many options presents a problem. how many hours must someone dedicate just to be at the point of one of the more "skilled" players? the more addons and revisions to existing items, the longer. and so the notion crossed brain I'm certain, so he raises the prices on everything. this is more of a bandaid solution, to stop the wound of those attempting to have a full ship in every ship, but on the other end of the spectrum, it only adds more and more hours the casual player has to dedicate to be close to even with the others.

somewhere along the line, for whatever reason, brain or a cohort decided to increase freq compacity. I applaud this idea, however the extending to private freqs makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. the only thing you are accomplishing is isolating pop FURTHER to the 8-12 people who dedicate their lives to this zone. I'm almost certain they wouldn't care if it were to come to that, but you as a zone owner must have some concern.

although I know this will briefly cease when money is reset, the cycle will just start again. the only viable solution long term is this: isolate public frequencies to 0 and 1, uncap pub freq limit, and minimize maximum private freqs back to 5 people. that way, when lower pop is on, the cool clique or what have you can dominate, but in the peak hours, some diversity will be obtained, and money will be dispersed more freely, resulting in less hostility as you see here. you can keep all the nifty auxiliary custom doo-dads, just spike their prices to a high rate, and return to lower prices for key items like bombs, guns, energy, etc. then casual player can obtain all the main equipment that everyone else has with lower dedication, while the more dedicated players have a slight edge, as they should, but not overbearing as it is now.

I give mad props to whoever decided to read that. If nothing else, skim the last paragraph. Until the zone can get some balance to it, I declare it closed due to aidz.

ok maybe you need to spend less time finagling over your reading comprehension and more time getting the good stuff out

fyi I was comparing the question of having the means to do something with how actually doing it may be detrimental. Frankenstein is a perfect example. and if you wanted to get cool points, you would have said that you abhorred the analogy.

its fine the useful items arent that expensive, it just teaches new people skill to not die as much. all u need is ion drive, compression core, pulse laser and falcon missile, thats like 20k and its very strong already

agreed, and while all of that is true, I would only question the necessity of what's being refined. I think the best course of action would be to simplify the core structural elements of the zone itself, and allow the customization aspect which distinguishes the zone to get the opportunity to be realized by everyone. the solution to that, as I mentioned, is to minimize discrepancies in the flagging aspect of the game, allowing everyone to get a cut of the profit. stabilizing the economy and allowing everyone the opportunity to customize to their content will result in the greatest yield of appeal by the masses.

well, not so much lame as overbearing in the eyes of a first time player. I've been playing this more now since d1st0rt decided to give the pub freqs a go, with some success I might speculate, and I've concluded that if the freqs were to remain this way on a longterm or even just nightly basis, new players wouldn't have too much trouble equipping themselves. In that aspect, the price ranges established now are fine. It's only when it's isolated that new people might feel left out or helpless.

the only thing I see as lame right now are those !@#$%^&* fields blum.gif .

leave all those guns/bombs if you want, but PLEASE get rid of "PULSE LASER"

That l2 piece of crap with its decent firing rate, good speed, AND bouncing bullets is just overwhelming. Probaly 60% of my deaths in HS is due to this "pulse laser" weapon. please get rid of it.

just take out the lame stuff(shredder, salvo, phaser, disruptor, anti death) and everyone will be happy

Might as well just remove all guns and bombs cause they r all "lame" to a certain degree in a certain perspective.

agreed^

tho i think terr is getting the most complaints, it probably should be nerfed (tho i like my terr right now and i dont own ppl like crazy =P i dont want my terr nerfed)

just take shredder off of terr, ppl will switch to phaser which is almost as good (much more nrg efficient, 300 less dmg per second)

No zone on subspace is going to be lame free. There is no one weapon that can overpower every other ship automatically. Some people say wb sucks, but BlueWyvern constantly gets over 200 bounty when he's on in it. So, get some skill in your ship, and stop wasting money on 5 ships when you could max out one, and learn to use it. Nothing will ever be Lame Free. If this zone was completely balanced it would be a bore. I would hate it. Just my opinion.

Ok you people are going completly off topic, this is about the freq sizes, and I do agree with acti that the privs should be alot smaller, and pubs to be bigger, this zone would have alot more population if the newcomers could come in and flag and learn the game while earning some money, but instead the same people win over and over 90% of the time(I hate to say im in this category), but me and a couple people are going to start trying to help pub win, learn, and earn some money. I do enjoy the pub vs pub flag games I wish there would be alot more of this, because winning over and over with no compe!@#$%^&*ion has gotten stale.

I have been on pub freqs, and I have been on private freqs, and on the rare giant pub freqs, and frankly, private freq players win more because they are better, and know how to flag better. No, its not because they have more money (it helps less than most people think), its because they understand how flagging is supposed to happen, and what it takes to defend and attack. Most pub players do not understand rushing, one of the more important aspects of flagging.

From what I have seen, you can find pubbies with almost just as much stuff as the defending players. True most pubbies don't have a shark with 2 cc's, 1 seige, 1 tunnel, salvo and AD, but I have started to see more and more lancs with summon, and even AD being used by pubbies. There are tons of people with close combat (very often 2) and radiating coils. Yet they want to lay antimatter mines next to the lanc, or fly over the lanc and not push or rush, or they just give up while they are at an advantage, Its enough to drive a guy batty. I like the idea of the giant pub days, but pubbies need to learn HOW to flag, instead of just letting vets do the flagging while they are just fodder.

The way I see it, if you increased the pub size, it wouldn't help pubbies much, it would only allow vets to !@#$%^&*emble a larger team on a pub freq. Pubbies have the amazing ability to lose even when they double the defending team (I witnessed this today, 8v4 and 4 was winning.)

That is so dam true boldot. Even if the "vets"/rich people try to help, yes I tried basing w/ pubbies.....it doesnt end up well. Mainly cause they really dont know wat to do.

I see this happening alot in pub basing freqs:

-Warbird w/ 1-2 cc starts bountying behind their lanc

-Wzl shooting emp and end up emping themselves causing their whole team to get wiped out

-Placing mines at the wrong place

Whenever the vet/rich ppl tells them to do the correct thing, the pub players often act !@#$%^&*y or dont listen at all which frustrates the ppl trying to help. Which leads to us not wanting to help them anymore.

common pub mistakes(correct me if im wrong but this is what i see):

1. small ships(wbs, javs etc.) trying to be levis and spiders and bombing in bombline or gunning on the spot for bty.

2. does not rep and move up with ease( mostly reps will cause the guns/shrap/burst to crowd together and bounce back to kill everyone)

3. does not take advantage of summon

4. saves their own skin before their lancs ( i've seen it happen, pub is getting pressed and they all ran back leaving the slow lanc to die)

5. every single person trying to defend their spot by gunning( no rushers)

6. just run up and get themselves killed with no real help

7. blame others(mostly the defending team for being too cheap by being too good or other people who makes the same mistakes as themselves)

8. half the team either wallbombing outside with no effects or somewhere else

9. no real coordinated actions

10. give up once they die or lanc dies
