A driver issue I hope no one else has to deal with...

The USBLib filter driver didn't feel the need to properly uninstall itself. So, when the driver file was removed, the references to it in the registry were causing all kinds of driver failures.

Trust me on this, it was quite irritating trying to troubleshoot with no mouse, network or usb devices (and, at one point, no keyboard or Windows). The lesson to be learned here is: Be careful when removing drivers -- especially ones that attach themselves to other drivers.

in 7 hours and a half :s , backupping + reinstalling windows + reinstalling necessary programs takes about 4 hours each time i do it (and i do it every 4-6 months or so)

Better lesson, don't be a wannabe like cerium and actually do have the intelligence to create a restoration point prior to messing with system files and backing up frequently.

I find that a ghost of the system after restore with all the updates installed is an even faster way of doing things when it comes to a fresh install.

@Gravitron:

"Wannabe"? What exactly am I trying to be? Some Level 0 technician who's answer to everything is to "reinstall the operating system." Meh, I'll just chalk it up to one of your many complexes.

In any event, a restore didn't even fix the problem. The LibUSB driver installer edited the registry directly without bothering to let the restore utility know what it was doing.

@Drake:

Reinstalling Windows is such a !@#$%^&*ty way to approach issues. Half the reason it took me as long as it did is because I deleted a critical trunk of the registry before realizing it would disable every form of input I had. I had to use my laptop to get a BartPE CD so I could re-insert the entries I deleted. After that, it was as simple as fixing (Removing) the entries LibUSB added. On top of that, I learned a couple of things about windows as well as a neat way to intercept driver messages and I've got some new administrative utilities to boot.

@Dav:

In theory that's a good idea and is what I did when I first put XP on this (back when it was released). The problem is, I'd have to periodically make new images so I could have backups for updated drivers and new software. After about three months, I got sick of doing it -- takes forever to do and wastes CDs. I'm sure there are better utilities now, but I'm almost to the point where I'm going to be turning this machine into another server anyway.

@Audry:

If anything, this should make you less scared -- It's another windows quirk that I understand how to deal with.

Restoration point is a mirror of the registery.

If YOU create it YOURSELF, instead of relying on some automated process to do it for you because it makes changes, BEFORE you go mess with !@#$%^&*, THEN it should switch back just fine.

Yeah Dav, ghost images are cool too.

But I didn't like having the norton ghost app run actively.

!@#$%^&*er kept fapping to handlers, leaking memory all over the place and hogging CPU making some terrible thread lag.

"C-WORKSTATION-1"

Yeah, GG wannabe.

System Restore doesn't backup the entire registry. My machine makes nightly backup points and keeps no less than 30 at a time. I went back 7 days, and only managed to undo my summer power-settings, and a few other trivial things.

But hey, at least Microsoft's marketing team managed to convince one person that System Restore is teh best repair tool EVAR!!!!!11!

"C-WORKSTATION-1"

Yeah, GG wannabe.

Let's see, My super-cool internet domain starts with a C, it's a workstation and it's the first one on the network. Therefore, C-WORKSTATION-1. There's also C-SERVER-1 and 2, and C-GAMESTATION-1. Again, how does this make me a "wannabe?" Feel free to justify your comment.

I don't need to justify it.

The fact that you take it all serious and go around bragging what a leet coder or wtfever you are buys you a room on the short bus list, java boy.

Personally, I really couldn't care less, but I know that you got a thing, like a twitch, when it comes to me and I enjoy putting pressure on it.

If I press enough, you QQ MOAR.

MS Marketing had a campaign about system restore?

Oh man, I always miss on the good stuff!
