Some crazy nice banners that the students made for this year's Taiikusai (Sports festival), which extend from the 5th to 1st floor, that's how big they were!

During the Taiikusai, 3 teams compete through sports games and arts (which are these banners, the 3 gates, and the endan [sort of crazy awesome team dance which has no equal in Western countries]). The 3 teams & this years themes are Blue (magic/fantasy/wizard), Red (Matador - my team), and White (Ninja/Shinobi).

Lol, sadly in the beggining, Red's banner ended up breaking off from the top, later followed by the blue one which was ripping apart supposedly. They decided to take the white one down after as a precaution.

Red team's "gate".

Anyway, just thought I'd share that from Japan blum.gif

There were no food-related games, so no bread eating contest.

But there was something called (おおだまおくり) Oodamaokuri, which does involve a giant ball. The game basically consists of having members of your team form a huge line, 4 people take the ball and p!@#$%^&* it to the line of people which send the ball all the way to the back and back to the front. The 4 people make sure the ball doesn't bounce away, and at the end they put the ball back in its original spot. Fastest of the 3 competing teams wins. (I forgot who won this one though, but I was in it. Half the other people participated in what's called a "raft race" イカだ/ikada, which was done at the same time.)

Some other events (not all) were:

つなひき - tsunahiki (tug-of-war)

ぼうひき - bouhiki (similar to tug-of-war, but with two teams racing to steal sticks and fighting over them)

きばせん - kibasen (no equivalent in English, but it consists of several groups of 4 people, 1 on top, 3 holding, and fight other groups of the opposite team. Normally they're just suppose to remove these funky hats they wear, but my school made it outright "knock your opponent to the ground" - so it got pretty rough)

むかできょうそう - mukadekyousou (centipede race, up to 9 people are linked to the feet by a rope, and have to race together)

長縄 - naganawa (long jumping rope compe!@#$%^&*ion)

relay race

たまいれ - tamaire (this event teachers did, it consists of throwing little balls in a basket)

応援団 - ouendan (literally "chearleading", but better translated as 'team chear-dance', as mentioned in my first post)
