Bacterio rhodopsin contains a retinol cofactor linked to lys 216 by a schiff base. When exited by light of the correct wavelenght it converts from a trans to a cis configuration caused conformational changes to the helical arragement. This reduces the pKa of the schiff base whilst increacing the pKa of Asp 85 and proton transfer occurs. After this the proton is releaced to the extracellular surface of the protein. Asp 96 protonates the schiff base leads to conformational changes which retrun the proton to the ground state so it may undergo a further cycle.
