The individuals made a case since they were working in servers on behalf of Blizzard and had administrator privileges it was essentially implied they were doing "work" and therefore was subject for payment. I wouldn't be surprised if sooner or later people are being lame and sue for the heck of it - for real.

Did they think they would actually get money? Doubtful. But upset enough at being banned and such to actually send it? I think so.
