I noticed recently forum activity has declined (150+ to 110-120ish), and so have the number of ACTIVE players in the RPG and Arcade.

So just a few polling questions I'm curious about.

I like the forum chat thing. I noticed some other forums have it, would be nice.

This would be more connected into an zone. So people could chat in SS while being on the forums. HS gave me permission to use their chatnut program for SSCentral, and I figured maybe I'd put it here instead. Although the plans for it are to setup a hidden SSC zone just for chatting since it needs ASSS to work, and so people could talk to all their friends online while at school, work, etc. Since I know many visit here while at the same places, figured it might be nice.

I've had mixed feelings about 3rd-party chat applications, they're nice BUT what does it really do to the game. Do we really want to encourage more people to just come to SS for chatting, or playing? I know several people who sit in spec and chat all day long but at least they're in the game and could potentially play. Is it really that vital to have a web-based chat system? I'd like to know people's thoughts on it as well. Oh also, population is probably dipping because of nicer weather and school letting out.

I know i have said it before but i would like to see a full featured mobile version (with SSRPG and other features working). If this chat thing could be made to work mobile (java perhaps?) i think it would make SScentral more accessable and give it the edge over sscontinuum and other forums.

I think more incentive for zones to come and have their forums here would be a good boost to the population.

Also we need to try and provoke more SS general related discussion. Having distinct forums for dev is a great thing but the general forum seems to have dried up as of late.

I think this forum suffers from the same infliction as the rest of SubSpace: oversized 'management' that's comprised of immature, unfitting, dolts and does nothing but flaunt its power around while disregarding its own regulations which of course if any staff member lower in the food chain tries to apply to them as they do to the players they get fired or banned.

Duality of faces, power mongering and hypocracy FTL.

Being orginized is good.

Being corrupted and fishing for reasons to abuse your userbase isn't.

I've spent couple weeks doing nothing but wasting my time on SSRPG and keeping track so every generation round (what was it, 1-2 hours?) I could manage my army and remain among top in a compe!@#$%^&*ive manner only to have it all go down the toilet.

So !@#$%^&* SSRPG, not going to touch it ever again.

1) Just fine.

2) Add new games.

3) I would totally use it.

4) I don't play because I don't have enough time.

5) More diverse forums; give people more than just subspace to talk about. Every time someone makes a thread about non-subspce related things, it gets moved off into the wormhole and spammed to death. I also selected Other, and I think you should ban less, and warn/punish more.

And I gave you a customized skin...wtf, no love? I see how it goes.

5 - Hmm. That could be done.

Customized Skin - Crisp is an alternate skin, not really the Subspaceish Skin I'm hoping to go for. Not saying it is bad, just saying it isn't SUBSPACE.

Posted
Well I'll admit that, but in Crisp's defense, it's kinda hard to make a customized skin when the site doesn't even have a solid design. But to not even acknowledge Crisp's superiority over the default skin is just tom foolery blum.gif Everyone knows it's far more sexier than the default invision skin.

Main thing I dislike about crisp is that it doesn't let me utilize my obscene resolution
what he said

-I stopped playing Arcade because I still hold Asteroids record... and because it is a bit buggy (Lots of my scores were lost (partially?), and I know some other people's scores got trashed too)

-chat would be fun, indeed

-ssRPG... After the 1st round I realized it was too much of a waste of time, so I'm staying away from it blum.gif Not because it's not fun, but it just makes you log on the forums every hour blum.gif I don't know if the new sets are fun... but it sure keeps some people in these forums, so it's a good thing

-How to improve... I dunno, really... If I ever have an idea for that, u'll be the first to hear it

Since the only thing I participate in on here is SS RPG, I'll restrict my comments to that. To be honest, it's the only reason I visit these forums(other than OF's forums, obviously). But like others have already said, it's broken, and primarily rewards those who log on every hour. I can understand that you'd want to use it to bring more people to the forum, and people logging on more frequently seems to help, but it really just makes the game boring, and is one of the big reasons I quit this round. Of course, taking a weekend trip to Memphis and being away from my computer for 3 days was a large factor too. But when I came back, I sat down and converted everything to spy, and sabotaged the crap out of people for the next few days... then I realized how boring that was. I tried out Nightwasp to see if it would be more fun, and it wasn't.

As to answer your actual question about SS RPG, the old settings were definitely better than what's going on now, with the rules dramatically changing halfway through the round, but the old settings weren't exactly balanced either. You really just need someone who has experience with real strategy games to take over the development. On that matter, I know the core is limited, and even though it could be way better even restricted by the core... it's just, we DO have PHP coders on SSForum, I'm sure. If you really wanna make something of this, Polix, why not see if you can't convince some people to write a new game? I know people who have done that in the past, and it's not supposed to be incredibly difficult. It seems like too much effort to me, but if the current core proves to be too limited, it may be the only way to get anything worthwhile out of it.

Well, I will make one more comment. Bring Spyed back! :(

Posting rules: There is no clarity for anybody to work on - there are only a few rules defined. Do you want a bunch of rules to limit people on set borders or should people just post away? I see topics moved/closed, members banned without any rule to base it on. This creates confusion and anger with people because they don't know exactly what they can do.

Suggestion: only do things based on rules; someone is abusing? It's only illegal if there is a rule saying it is.

Arcade: Buggy, old, not updated or no news about it. I like to play a simple game now and then but I hate to find out there is a bug that makes it impossible to save the score or the game is unbeatable.

Chat: Chat would be really nice to have. However, as pointed out by cypherjf - is it really usefull when looking at the forums?

SS RPG: Don't play it - I don't want to put my time into such a thing.

Improve the forum: I'm not really sure how to make SSForums a better place. I choose advertizing and a new custom skin but I can't really see how that would improve the forum.

Reorganizing the forums (again?!) wouldn't really make much of a difference imo. People have used to the way it is now and I don't see much problems with it. More diverse forums can also easily be done by splitting up General Discussion a bit. (I would leave the development section, it's nice and gives exposure to the development projects/teams going on.)

Last but not least; I totally agree with SyrusMX's point about moving topics and banning people in his post #9.

Are posting rules too strict?

Sometimes, but not always

Reason I say this is because the Wormhole often ends up more popular than General Discussion, after all there is only so much SS you can talk about.

Is the arcade getting old?

Yes, add new games

Games are boring, they were good when they had lots and lots.

Would an integrated online (SSC connected) chat system be nice?

I might use it occasionally

Would it be like a subchat with people actually playing SS? That would be cool, if not then it would still be cool but obviously the point in the forum is to post. Not to chat so I would expect a decline in people posting.

Did you prefer the old or new SS RPG?

Don't play SS RPG, why? I'll tell you

Don't play, not my kind of thing.

How can we improve Forum Central

Advertise, Advertise, Advertise (Need your help on this one too)

The more people the better.

I'm going to take all opinions into mind.

I'm also going to reorganize things for a week as a test, and throw in a few things, and see how it goes.

I think we may need to diversify the forum slightly - perhaps an increased "off-topic" area, with categories such as what SyrusMX suggested. This would encourage people with different interests to post more, and not feel confined to only posting when they have something SubSpace-related or 'general' to say.

If the chat system was made so that it is mobile-compatible, then I think it would be very good (as there is no way for users to currently participate in the SubSpace community in real-time while using mobile devices). Otherwise ,I am not so sure...

I think posting rules are fine, however they may need clarification. For example, take the rule "Respect the Moderators of the forum, and let them do their job". How do we respect them? Does this mean that we cannot disagree with them, or simply that we cannot abuse them? What is their job, exactly? Is it their job to censor other people's posts for cr!@#$%^&* language, for example? Perhaps you get my point. But, overall, they are ok... I just think that some people are getting caught by their ambiguity.

That is all...

Stop trying to upgrade the forums and change things around; number one priority is to finish the promised website. Reason? Because this isn't on a seperate domain as before, instead a subdomain of remnants of an outdated website.

WOW I just read through alot of this and there's alot of good feedback in alot of different areas...

Speaking as a renewed nooB here, I love the RPG game (for now), the Arcade also attracted me here, the mul!@#$%^&*ude of forums I think presents an awesome presence. I would encourage you to keep adding too and resisting taking away from what you have here. As you are most likely aware, you are getting a small sampling of what people think about all these things. You have thousands who are members here who each one comes for a variety of reasons. Some just to spectate.

I think this is the BEST Subspace Forum in existence!

Thanks for being here!

Peace!

TRP :(

PS How about that Star Trek Skin for the Forums, maybe a few other choices too.
