Add slot maximums to certain ships so a warbird can't be armed as heavily as a lancaster. This would give people more incentive to buy bigger better ships and would also give those ships an advantage or a way for the settings to be balanced in a more exotic matter (instead of buffs).

 

Cargo holds would be cool too, add in trading posts at every sector that buy and sell cargo. Have ships drop cargo greens or something. Then give each ship cargo holds dependent on size.

 

This would also make a weight or size variable for items. So lets say a warbird buys an ion drive which takes 2 slots while an overthruster or icefire might take more slots. This would make new items possible and perhaps new technologies like miniaturization (adds more slots).

I think that balling should be brought back. Remember when HS would divide up into balling teams and go at it in center? I mention this as an easier-to-implement alternative to the cargo-green-trading system, which would be cool too.

At the moment, there's no way to differentiate item limits between ships, beyond the already existing ship limitations.

 

The greens wouldn't be possible, but I think smong may have done something with LVZs in his pirates zone. I'm not sure I want to turn HS into a Cosmic Rift style Rogue Trader though.
