NBVegita Posted April 11, 2007 Report Posted April 11, 2007 I took ancient greek as a language. About as hard as japanese.
Animate Dreams Posted April 11, 2007 Report Posted April 11, 2007 Well, Japanese is incredibly easy, so that makes me excited about my Greek class next semester.
NBVegita Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 There is a difference between greek and ancient greek.
Animate Dreams Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 Yeah, the class is actually over both Classical and Koine Greek. Which did you take?
Aileron Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 Well, I did okay on the test. Generally, my teacher has given me an extra credit option though. All I have to do is write a new textbook and he'll give me an "A" in the course.
NBVegita Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 (edited) lol Ionic greek represents a form of greek from the period of time between 800-400 (estimate I took the class 2 years ago) BC. Homers works were done in Ionic greek, and its dialects. Most of the forms of greek were regional at that time. This is before the language turned into the casual !@#$%^&*enistic greek. Edited for "at that time" Edited April 12, 2007 by NBVegita
Aileron Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 Why learn a !@#$%^&*ty language like that. Jihad. Well, I'm a math major. The #1 employer of math majors in the country is the NSA. The NSA views knowledge of Arabic as a big bonus. Its one of the most politically tense classes you can take. Roughly half of the students are either ROTC or people who want to go into national intelligence agencies, and the other half are people who want to be translators or diplomats. So, half of us have a life goal of making peace with the same group of people that the other half's life goal is to create a high body count of. Many of the hard-core cultural lectures lead to an hour long arguement. If it wasn't so !@#$%^&* difficult I'd recommed it...the arguements are fun as !@#$%^&*.
rootbear75 Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 oh noes... are we gonna have a spy in our midst?!
Animate Dreams Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 I thought Homer was "classical" greek. Or is Ionic the proper term for Classical, as Koine is the proper term for Biblical?
NBVegita Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 Well the problem is at that time there were 3 distinct dialects pertaining to the area you were in. The !@#$%^&* if I remember what the other two were called. I think it was Doric spoke by the area near sparta, and I can't remember what the athenian one was.
