Disney has Mickey, McDonalds has Ronald, Geico has the Gecko. Video games have Sonic and Mario. This morning, Sega and Nintendo announced that the two familiar faces will partner in a new game -- Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, released for Wii and Nintendo DS near the end of the year.

"Mario and Sonic have been respectful rivals since the early days of video games," Senior Managing Director and General Manager at Nintendo Shigeru Miyamoto says. "In fact, for a long time they have been discussing the possibility of one day competing against each other. Now that they have been given the perfect opportunity to meet at the Olympic Games, we may finally learn who is actually faster, Mario or Sonic?"

Mario and Sonic, along with Luigi, Knuckles, Yoshi and Tails (and others) will compete with each other in Olympic sports, such as table tennis, swimming and running -- all in environments that will mirror the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

The game will be co-released by Sega and Nintendo, and has been licensed by International Sports Media -- the official software license for the International Olympic Committee.

"We are thrilled to partner with Nintendo and ISM on this groundbreaking !@#$%^&*le," Sega's President and Chief Operating Officer Hisao Oguchi says. "For the first time, two of the world's greatest games' characters come together to compete in the world's greatest sporting event and we couldn't be more excited."

We have a briefing with Nintendo and Sega at 1:30 p.m. EST -- look for more details soon after.
