Back in the good old days finding a host for your zone was almost impossible. Why now that everybody has DSL or Cable nobody bothers hosting a server? Has the whole thing of running a server at home gone down the drain or is nobody interested in running one for SS?

In Florida I had 2 5/2mbit FiOS connections. but that was a rented house, you'd think the people living in those areas are running servers everywhere, but no they are dumb consumers who go on myspace, pay their bills online and download legally licensed content from various DRM stores.

I'll try running a few zones from the good old days on my server but I have a 3072/384 connection. Enough for a good few players though, I remember 10-15 players on a 128k upstream connection without too much lag so it should be possible. But srsly, everybody and their mom have a high speed connection, and an old computer yet hardly anyone bothers running any sort of server at all, !@#$%^&* it they don't even forward their ports for bittorrent.

Is there even a good billing server I could hook up my zones to so I won't have to run my own? my server is a bit of a heap of !@#$%^&* (350MHz) but I guess it will do

SSEO is a good server/billing. I ran a zone on there (the zone sucked :D ) and there are a couple zones that run on there. No lag, doesn't go down. Talk to Cybersnipe about it.

The stability of a cable line and its capacity to hold a useful pop if often still an issue. Its good for a little mess about but not much more unfortunately.

alot of ISPs block incoming connections to ports such as mega_shok.gif, 25 and 443 to stop you hosting :(

!@#$%^&*. those ASSS.

mine dont do it though, and when its not !@#$%^&*ing up my speeds are stable. i can always get 40k up, 300-320 down

Back in the day and i do mean in the day. I used to host several zones off of bussiness class Cable modem from Roadrunner I ran a little network called Tnet it was !@#$%^&*a fun back in the day. (We made the first Network wide banning system) Which is the same thing INET used when they started up

I have a 15/2 Fios connection so hosting zones would be much better its much more stable then the cable modem from the days of old. Unfortunatly the lack of time plays a big part of it. Maybe one day

People with cable modems and dsl lines should deffinatly give back to the communtiy and host zones

Really, its not an issue of hosting zones, but an issue of having zones to host, heh.

I've got 2 servers that are basically completely unused. No good zones to host, !@#$%^&* no zones to host period.

Not to mention that you booted Jackpot SVS off for not being able to achieve a "population" because it was using up system resources and your money. Anyway Death+ picked the zone up and hosts it now. :S

Kind of irrelevant (I do not know), but I do not want SSC access because of the "prejudice" kind of feeling against non-SSC and such. Certainly there are non-SSC zones that you have to be careful about from password theft, but I am very sure that trust can be established with some non-SSC zones that have earned it. I have heard that if I were to go SSC, I would infact lose power than gain and there would be the chance that my zone could be taken over through the "SSC empire laws."

Heh... blum.gif

Maybe I don't know what I am talking about, but having my zone permanently connected to my Public Biller atleast gives it some use and support. I have a Public Biller to support, and Jackpot SVS is currently the best zone I could get as a "center" for the Public Biller. Kind of unfortunate that I was forced to halt programming on the biller because my coder's laptop broke and he ran out of money. Ouch.

I definately agree, there needs to be more player-hosted zones and more player interaction. But if you have too many players hosting too many zones (this is fine though), who will be left to play each other's zones? Meh, I certainly liked the old days better where more players took advantage of running their own zone and trying to build their own dream zone. smile.gif I remember when I had some zone !@#$%^&*led "Night Hawk" or something; it got some daily player count of ~8 or something.

Those were the days.. Would be nice to see it happen again. :D

Not all the zones players run appear on the public directories. There are some private directories.

NOTE :: Due to a major bug in Catid's biller' date=' this service will not be offered for the time being. If you are interested in helping correcting bugs or coding for the biller, please let me know. Sorry for the inconvenience.[/b']

your biller working now?

I remember tnet! you used to have a t1 at some point didn't you? and i remember you saying it was better than SDSL, and gemini dream not agreeing with you. I used to be a mod in one of the zones on that network. 1stLife? the guy who owned the zone had the same name, until he !@#$%^&*ed off like most people who ever played this game and that was the end of it.

I've got a couple of zones that could do with a biller...

It hasn't crashed since a few months ago when I made it crash. If nobody knows how to crash it and people don't get the idea to try to crash it, everything will operate as it is supposed to. I am very much open to private submissions at the moment, while I will remain to have public submissions through the registration form closed.

I am wanting to take advantage of the GroupID feature. It is an excellent way to channel BanG access of a server owner to all the zones he is hosting that is connected to the biller.

Server owners, if they want, can get L1 BanG access to all the zones they host connected to the Public Biller. If a server owner wants to, for example, channel all the zones he hosts to the biller, all the zones will be using the same GroupID and a unique GroupID different from the primary, free-lance "0."

0 = For zones that are on their own and want to free-lance in the non-SSC world their own way. BanG access can be given up to L2.

1+ = Could be used for a network of zones. The host of the network of zones could have L1 BanG access over it all without interfering with zones they do not host or sponsor.

Unlike SSC, there are no global scoreresets. If you would like me to do this, I can have a global scorereset every 2 weeks. I might be able to even do network (GroupID-based) scoreresets. Heh.

i got a cable modem and could prbably host a few zones quite easily... but both places that i could use it are behind firewalls, and i don't want my parents to have to screw with it when its not necessary.

trouble is that you may have a useable line but that falls flat iof your PC isnt up to the job.

Another problem here in the UK is bandwidth caps or "fair usage policy" where they throw you on a slow line if you use too much on the faster service at peak times.

If anyone has recently looked at the servers...there are a few populated ones, and 70-mega_shok.gif% are with only a bot. People stick with the main ones (TW, EG, Metal, Chaos). Its not that the other servers are bad, its just that people want to kill other people, not sit in a zone for a day waiting for target.

I dont think that would work all that well now a days. With up to 90+ gigs of transfer Although the machine might. Connection certainly not. It used to be hosted on alot less than that blum.gif

SSDL was originally hosted on a Quad Pentium Pro 200mhz Machine, with a 768/768k line.

He quit the game... which is unfortunite for anyone unlucky enough to be hosted on SSCI.

Example of why I'm glad I never give the go to work with him. Yet again threatening another one of his zones cause they have their forums here.
