PoLiX Posted March 7, 2007 Report Posted March 7, 2007 It has been 1 year since the biggest event to hit subspace since the release of Continuum. SSCX is no more. - March 4, 2006 - 2:02 AM by Mackieman I never thought I'd be around to see this day. A player from SSCX PowerBall contacted the company where the SSCX servers are hosted and reported the server activity. As a result, SSCX1 has been permanently shutdown and SSCX2 will be next. Quite obviously, this news is devastating to the SubSpace community as SSCX has been the largest and most stalwart host for nearly ten years. But more than that, there are personal losses as well. In addition to reporting the server, Xalimar's name was mentioned and he is now in danger of losing his job. I am at a loss as to what would posses a player to do this but it is utterly despicable. I wish Xalimar and yarkim the best in whatever comes next and I can speak for thousands of players when I earnestly thank them both for the years of service and free gift to this community. Honestly, how do you guys feel the community has changed?
»1587200 Posted March 7, 2007 Report Posted March 7, 2007 From a player standpoint I don't think anything changed.
»doc flabby Posted March 7, 2007 Report Posted March 7, 2007 more people leaving than comingthat was already the case before the annoucement imo. I think the more interesting thing is the two highest populated zones are now hosted on the same server.
»D1st0rt Posted March 7, 2007 Report Posted March 7, 2007 It had a huge impact on ASSS zones as the primary host was no more
Aileron Posted March 8, 2007 Report Posted March 8, 2007 Well, this is what happens when you try to host something on something that you do not own. Really, the Continuum community prides itself on being free to players, but as my last economics professor says "There's no such thing as a free lunch." Someone had to pay for the SSCX server and as it turns out that bandwidth was essentially stolen from a company, albeit from a company with bandwidth to spare. What's killing the Subspace community is a failure to generate income. Generating income doesn't necessarily involve charging a subscription fee. My suggestion: Product placement advertising. The relatively new .lvz addition can incorporate ads directly in the map. While many in this community think money is evil, money buys servers; money pays programmers; money buys advertising. This event is merely an example of the failure to understand this. The fact that the entire SS community rejects the idea of money is what is causing this game to decline.
Samapico Posted March 8, 2007 Report Posted March 8, 2007 Xalimar's name was mentioned and he is now in danger of losing his job.Did he lose it? =/
Chambahs Posted March 8, 2007 Report Posted March 8, 2007 I think he did actually...anyone know the person who snitched? I still originally dont know...but i have heard rumors. Also, now that you mention servers..if you really look outside the box, there arent anymore big servers that are hosting anymore. SSCC isnt accepting anymore zones, SST is dead, SSCB is down, sscu isnt accepting...SSCI is the only server still up/accepting zones. And since d+ got rid of the *nix box, theres no major hosting for ASSS. New zone hosts wont get too far if there are no SSC slots to give. Look at SSZ, back in the day, it was up for months, SSZ DS got a decent pop, worthy of an SSC slot, it never happend, turns out, instead of SSZ getting an SSC slot to help build their rep, they moved to SSCC. IMO new servers, zones, players, with an oldbie touch, is what keeps communities rolling.
Confess Posted March 8, 2007 Report Posted March 8, 2007 SST/SSCT closed and then SSCB shortly came after, however SSCT is coming back in the LA vacinity, only difference is that we will not be allowing .38 due to a bug with Windows 2003. Im really really considering working towards a Nix Box, the only thing is I see no one that would truly be worth spending that much money, as I would be unwilling to do it for just one zone unless that zone would chip in money itself. Death, from my understanding, hopefully will soon have his nix box up, that will help any ASSS zones that are not fearful of moving over to him *no offense, d+*.

All the people do is talk, talk, and talk on here, they never act.
»Rowen Posted March 8, 2007 Report Posted March 8, 2007 SSCX Was an amazing server. It was filled with backdoors for admins to get their daily dose of 100% unrated Warbird on Terrier Porn. Spider on Lancaster, the rules of race showed no bound for these multifire videos. Watch Lancaster's drop bomb's on eachother's bases. Spiders weave bursts of deceit! Imma goin' to miss dat serher.
»freakmonger Posted March 8, 2007 Report Posted March 8, 2007 Sigh, if you can't stay on topic then STFU... Anyways, *I* think SSCX getting shutdown was the biggest blow to the community since VIE dropped support / first phase of twister. Luckly priitk picked up the zones that requested hosting, and I dont THINK that any zone died due to it. But it did put a huge blow into the future dev of ss/cont because even though SSCX wasn't actively taking new zones, it could have one day. So there went another stable host
Hakaku Posted March 8, 2007 Report Posted March 8, 2007 Imo, the SSCX wasn't that big of a thing, but this was only one of the most notable events. In the past year, there has been a huge shift towards from relying on Priitk for updating/helping the game, many zones have been (and are still) switching over to ASSS, and more player-driven projects have been making a bit of progress (Discretion, DCME, getcontinuum, etc.). There has also been a decline in players (unsurprisingly), and more servers shutting down, such as SSCB recently. SSCI has been doing pretty well for itself though, but let's not forget the taboos more or less related (Halo, etc.). Anyway, that's what I think. And I also don't think the .39 update is worth noting, since I still have doubts it will ever happen.

»Ceiu Posted March 8, 2007 Report Posted March 8, 2007 You can probably argue that simply paying for the servers may not be considered "profit", but... meh.

While many in this community think money is evil, money buys servers; money pays programmers; money buys advertising. This event is merely an example of the failure to understand this. The fact that the entire SS community rejects the idea of money is what is causing this game to decline. That is so true. I have offered to pay monthly fees for zone hosting, and the reply I recieved was a joke. I know what I am doing because I've had over 6 years of play with Subspace and atleast 2 to 3 years of Subspace server administration. Anybody is free to conduct business. I run Bluetoast Webhosting at HLRSE.Net and nobody has stopped me. I do as I please because it's my freedom and within my Cons!@#$%^&*utional rights as an American citizen. Just because something lawful today tries to restrict the freedom to conduct business however someone wants to does not mean it is lawful. I offer money because I feel it is the right thing do to. The idea of 100% free was yesterday and a childish idea. The older and more mature I grew the sooner I realized and moved into the business world. In a community like this, there is no reason to reject an offer (atleast if the person knows what he is doing). Anyway.. :\ I just feel a little disturbed how much of this community does reject the idea of money when it comes to things like zone hosting.
Aileron Posted March 9, 2007 Report Posted March 9, 2007 It is my understanding that our agreement with BDE is such that we can't make any money off of this game Yeah, but if the CTM community followed the law they wouldn't have freeloaded bandwidth off of a company that did not give permission to set up the SSCX server. Seems to me that they broke the wrong law.
