I was going to make this comment but thought it was a bit off topic. I still retain my comment on server owners though.

We have been taking about priit passing the client on for years now and it seems nothing has happened so I'm not getting my hopes up.

I'm happy that there will be another release but it seems to me the real development future is with a are client build if any of the projects suggested get off the ground.

I doubt the source will ever be released. I see not point in releasing it, there's no one I know I would trust to keep the source and update cont. And there's no point giving a trusted person the source if they aren't going to work on it.

Rewriting the client is not a sensible option, you will never get a player base as large as cont is now. I am !@#$%^&*uming a new client would be incompatible with subgame (the only safe way to do it without killing cont - think of the new client like an artificial black hole made by scientists, they may have good intentions but the entire planet then gets sucked into it killing us all). Don't go on about "the massive linux user influx", I would say almost all gamers use windows.

Realistically I see two options:

- Forget it and just play while you still can.

- Quit now and get over it. There's plenty of modern games out that are fun to play.

Useless banter:

correct me if im wrong but the cracking of the subspace encryption allowed the development of bots etc.

As in it sparked a massive amount of development.

If I take this quote in context, you are comparing twisters methods of cheating to cracking the encryptrion? I think the two are separate things.

surly if bots can do it then an encryption can be written that to the server itself is continuum and it will work just as well.

If more time is available the rewrite the server side as well with a way to copy the DB over to make a seamless transition.

Ok this post doesn't make much sense.

A good banning system and watchful mods are a far better solution than any automated cheat detection.
I think I would agree with this.

He should give it to death. He would make subspace/Continuum better.
No...

I don't want to see crap organization and unprofessionality in Subspace or Continuum - VIE wasn't like that. Atleast they were better at it than whoever decided to organize ASSS the way it is now.
Well VIE got paid we don't. I see you are bashing grel, that kinda negates bdwinsalt request for grel to get the src. Either way I don't think he has the time to look after cont.

*shrugs* I don't know about you, but still doing my work volunteerly, I want to take pride in my work and show as best and clean 'product' I can. Heh. Was PriitK paid for Continuum? ;)

@ smong

What i was trying to say is this.

If mervbot can connect to the servers without a problem then wouldnt a newly coded client be able to to it on the same way? IE use the same encryption code as merv.

If this cannot be done and somone out there has the time thgen perhaps they could code a whole new back end as well using the same DB to keep all the accounts and info.

Thing is given the way pervious attemts at a client project have gone I dont see this happening any time soon but perhaps at some point in the future when things get dire.

@LC

What I meant was VIE was probably working on the game 5 days a week 9 to 5. Most of us players have other things to do in our life that can make the organisation of any contributions we make look scatty.

@Dav

Ok I understand now. A valid point which I see Drake and Freak countered.

Making a new client use the same DB for usersnames/passwords shouldn't be a problem. I don't think it's necessary to write a new biller, just wasting more time and adding room for more to go wrong.

I wonder if Mr. Ekted secretly has the source. He did create the menus and stuff. Make Ekted update it. biggrin.gif

The only PART of the source Ekted has is the part that he made. Like i've said in many posts, priitk is the ONLY person with the FULL source.

Gravitron, windows was created so that more stupified people could use a computer.

Windows was created because Jobes wanted to sell Apples in a compe!@#$%^&*ive quan!@#$%^&*y versus Big Blues and he was willing to pay Gates nicely.

I do not believe that you cannot be professional regardless of being unpaid. The Half-life: Sven Co-op team does everything unpaid, yet they are more professional (and overally better) than most Half-life/2 mods because they do not release crap betas and other stuff with crap impressions. One of the first things anybody gets from opening the game up and playing it is that it was made by a bunch of professionals who have no real jobs.

I am unpaid, yet I work in quality. I want someone to think that the work I released looks "professional," or atleast a piece of quality that someone spent their time carefully on.

PriitK was unpaid, yet he did his work in quality (Continuum).

The Sven Co-op team is and was unpaid, yet they work Sven Co-op professionally and in quality.

Quality and professionality. I hold it in high value. Being paid only boosts motivation, which is the only difference I have ever seen when someone has came to me and paid me for my work. I do not believe that being "paid" will change very much, except the motivation. And I can only assume that if one does not pay a person who does not release quality/professional-looking work high enough, they will continue to be that way.

PriitK is a professional, and you do not have to be licensed to be a professional. If you can program good, that is a thumbs up. If you can organize well and bring out a quality piece of work that consumers will think "it was constructed by a professional(s)," that is a thumbs up. I want to see all thumbs up, even if there is a lack of features and such.

You could trust me with the source.

But like you said, no point in giving it to someone who won't work on it.

Besides, I still say to !@#$%^&* with the source.

Create your own game. This one reached a dead-end.
