SVS Posted February 9, 2007 Report Posted February 9, 2007 I was reading the New York Times today and I saw this article and it got me thinking about what could possibly go wrong with this type of experiment. Do any of you think that inevitably we, in our drive to increase our breadth of knowledge, will destroy ourselves? Link Edit - My bad, didn't actually link the article.

sil Posted February 9, 2007 Report Posted February 9, 2007 I remember reading something similar awhile ago. And in the article it mentioned the chance that a black hole could form. It was some very small chance that in probability has no real chance of happening, but it WAS there! I wish I had the article. On the note of black holes, my friend was following this group that wanted to launch a sateilite in space and test their machine that would supposedly make a black hole. I was shocked at how stupid that idea sounds. "Lets create a black hole in our solar system, yay!" I think that it's likely that we may destroy ourselves in the name of science. Atom bombs were created in the name of science after all.
jacob hunter! Posted February 9, 2007 Report Posted February 9, 2007 Wasn't there an article awhile back about scientists saying that an asteriodor other rock might hit the earth in a few years? Of course it's probably measured in 1 - 60 chances but still leaves you wondering. And also might I add the effect of global warming and how that could pretty much destroy the people population. lol you could go on and on about what MIGHT happen to this world such as black holes being created or science destroying the world, but it will be interesting to see what happens

It was obvious that SVS was talking about a possible consequence of the experiment in the article he linked. Re!@#$%^&*.

There are many things that can happen under the laws of physics like you randomly appearing on the other side of the universe but in reality it just wont happen so there is nothing to worry about IMO. The scale they are doing it on would only create a micro black hole i think and as far as i know they are harmless to us. Don't quote me though im no expert but judging by things i've read in the past thats what ill guess at. Any physics experts want to correct this and make things clear? someone has to know more then i do about this.

Re!@#$%^&*.theres my problem.... loli just recieved an F in AP Physics C..... so whattya expect?(tho i did get B's in normal physics... we didnt cover stuff that small, mostly just mechanics, etc...) so what exactly could go wrong?
