Let SS Die: Why we don't need it anymore.

Such a bold statement, but why are we constantly convincing ourselves that there is something new and innovative about this game? Lets admit it - the graphics are !@#$%^&*. The infantry zone's graphics are not anywhere comparable to the Sony's version of infantry. There is no development on PRiit's end (and even if there was, nothing major will happen). So who are we kidding? Subspace isn't fun!

But what have we created here? We've managed to convince ourselves that subspace is fun, and there is a future. We have high hopes that SS will be great one day - it it won't. We've created ourselves a false hope. Nothing is going to happen.

Sure, squads, and online friends are perhaps the reasons why people stay on this game. But honestly, talk to them online through MSN or AIM or something. You don't need to hang around this game just to talk to them. Why are we still playing this game. The death of Subspace is long overdue. SSCouncil won't let anybody do anything. They were once fresh bloods full of ideas, and now they've turned conservative, and apathetic. Why are we still contributing to this game?

Don't tell me that you love this game. You might have liked it a few years ago when you started playing, but please admit to me one thing: the novelty of the game wears off. Like any objects or items of desire, their novelty will wear off. So what happens when the novelty wears off? We try to convince ourselves that this is still an awesome game. We convince ourselves that this game is still fun because we're joined to this elite group of squadmates, or staff.. or SSCouncil...

So when the game no longer becomes fun, we start to seek status in the game. We start to want to be known in the community.. so we can have our ego stroked by a bunch of nerds who sit behind the screen, afraid to show their faces in the real world. This has been going on for the past 10 years since this game was created, and it is because of this 10th year, that the ego has taken a turn for the worse. Ever wonder why Swift barely plays this game anymore? (I'm not making a personal attack on you swift. I need to illustrate a point. i am making an observation. hope you don't hate me.).. It's because he's already reached the top of the SS Ladder. He's already hailed as a legend and now he's on to another game (WoW) that has tons of better graphics and has more worth than an old, beat-up 2d spaceship game.

SS is not a game anymore. Rather, its an ugly community of players who are seeking status. That's all you can see Subspace as. It's no longer about the game. It's the status. In life, we constantly try to define ourselves, our iden!@#$%^&*y through interactions with other people. We define ourselves by who we are, but essentially we can find out who we are by who we are NOT. Who we are NOT can be found out through interactions with friends, families and enemies. In subspace, we are all seeking some sort of a relationship... unfortunately, this relationship has inevitably become hierarchical. Staff define themselves as NOT players. Squadmates define themselves as "not rejects," that sort of deal.

My point? There is no easy solution to this. I'm just pointing to the dark underbelly of subspace. This hierarchical relationship has been around since 10 years ago in subspace, but has never been so prominent until this very day. People are speaking up wanting to revive this game. People are not even yet in their stage of revolt; they are looking for affirmative action, yet the SSCouncil refuse to he of service. These genuine people with their interests vested in this game have been shot down by power-hungry mongrels who want to keep their sweet kick-!@#$%^&* spots in SSCouncil... Defining themselves as the SS elites.. an exclusive club of individuals who are "not losers."

SSCouncil. There's no harm in letting the people do what they want. We don't want power. We just want a say. We want our voices heard. You say you are server hosts. You ultimately want more populations coming to your zones and having fun right? Then let us help. We are not trying to revolt or bring you guys down. Keep your positions. Lets see some thing done.

As for the people who are slowly rising against the SSCouncil for change, make a proposal. They are not going to listen to you if all you're going to do is criticize, criticize criticize. If you have new ideas, bring them up and let them hear it out. So far i have heard nothing in terms of proposal other than the fact you're all banking on the idea that Priitk might give up his code and development will happen from then. If you have no ideas, then you're no better than the SSCouncil.

These are some of the observations i made from a sociological standpoint. Please feel free to leave coments (nice ones and constructive ones. I don't need kiddy bashing :()

i honestly think you nailed it....
Then why are you still here? You can leave.

If people stand up and want to revive Continuum, that's them. I think they still have a sense of Real Life™.

Did anyone else read this or..?
i know about that... but i think he nailed all of the problems except for the one about Priit developing

yeah... well.. didnt read further than that:

There is no development on PRiit's end (and even if there was, nothing major will happen).

Ophie, get in on the higher ranks and you'd realize that it's nothing like that.

It's more pain than fun to be a staff member or someone influencial in this game. They only do it because they care. So please do not say that the people on top don't care; nor do they even try to hinder any player who wishes to create something new.

i didn't read it, you know why?

i'll tell you why.

STFU and stop playing the game if you dont like. If we like it, we'll keep playing it.

i'd like to send out a big thank you to all the idiots over the years who have posted saying to stop playing the game, thanks for telling me how i should go about things, where would i be without you guys!

Mtn... I was owner of SSCC / SSCX Omega Fire for quite a while for quite a while. At that time, I saw no point to subspace and so i quit at the time...

Again, a lot of ppl are telling me to quit subspace if i don't like it. Listen, whenever i log onto continuum (and i barely do), i just log on once a week for 5 minutes to chat with some ppl and see if theres any interesting conversation.... i don't really play

In essence, I kinda did quit. There's nothing really interesting in subspace anymore. it's boring. you tell me if i hate subspace, I should leave... why should i? I mean, there are a lot of ppl who hate vegetables but they eat it once a while...

SD big - i would suggest you read what i have to say..

Maybe YOU are bored of this game.

But i still enjoy playing it. Its still fun to me. Maybe its because i only started playing in 2005.

The subspace you describe means nothing to me.

My subspace experience is this.

I login play a few events in TW, or pop over to EG for some pubbin,

chat to my fellow brits in our chat and some of my squadmates.

Maybe play a twd game, or i just go pub and play.

All this other bs doesn't apply because i'm not involved in it.

I think that at!@#$%^&*ude that we should let it die is pretty selfish.

Not everyone who plays has been playing for a long time. New players play subspace every day.

My issue is really, what do the people who play really want.

Rather that what all these people who stopped playing want

What server hosts etc want may not be best for the game.

I don't think i've seen any creative suggestions from anyone in this forum.

Graviton nailed it in this post. http://forums.sscentral.com/index.php?showtopic=12980#22

Amen

And theres still those of us who would like to see subspace just stay pretty much the same, its cool not being graphically advanced. easy and fast to load. I think that promotion is the key here, millions of people play online card games and other lower level games than subspace.

Good, I've found you a replacement. It is an Internet Chat Relay (IRC). I suggest downloading mIRC at http://www.mirc.com/ and joining one of the gaming channels located in the Gamesurge channel (irc.gamesurge.net). What you a looking for Ophie, is far better in IRC - I garuantee you. If you're going to try to cause damage to Subspace just because you don't like it any more, then you can leave, and this is somewhat logical.

I think you have some valid points, but mainly personal opinions. Sure, I've played this game since VIE, and sure, Subspace definately sparked more of an interest in me many years ago. To me, SS is kind of like an ex-girlfriend, you slam here long and hard enough, you eventually get bored. But some time down the line, you have a few brews, have the urge to get your !@#$%^&*y sticky, so what do you do? You call that !@#$%^&*. You tell her what she wants to hear, and when it's all said and done you still had a good time even though it's not equally as good as when you first met her.

All I'm trying to say is, for me, SS is one of those games I pick up every now and then and still manage to have a blast. Mind you, 95% of the people I first met while playing this game are long gone. Either way, it is still a good way to reminisce on past good times, although my zones of choice have suffered drastically and dwindled away to nothingness.

After many leaves of absence, and triumphant returns, there isn't a doubt in my mind I will still play Subspace part-time until the death of it. So shoot me, or call me a nerd, or whatever, because I could personally give 2 ASSS.

Oh yeah, and as Ophie was trying to explain, there is a definate increase in the amount of Brown-Nosing going on. What happened to the days of people saying what was on their mind without worrying about a simple silence or perm-ban?? Grow some cohenas and don't expect all that !@#$%^&* kissing to do you any good, because I !@#$%^&*ure you in most cases, it won't.

They care...to conserve their power.

SubSpace is dead. Now you have Continuum.

And who plays Infantry on Sony? FreeINF is the (new wave) way.

I've quit this game altogether, found something much better.

I understand why people who have played this game for 5+ years might not want to play it as much anymore. Or in fact find a different game to play. People move on. However what everyone seems to forget is the new people who play, the game is all new to them. if you can remember back to when you started playing, and the delight of managing to kill your first enermy ship. The game still held your imagination, you found it fun.

The problem we have is alot of people in positions of power have stopped enjoying playing the game.

The honourable thing to do when you no longer enjoy something is to quit.

passover your responsibilities. This is very hard to do, people get used to their power, and worry other people won't do as good as job.

Because of this they start to hate the game, because they feel forced to help something they don't enjoy playing and have no interest in.

Let go.

Most of the sensible people in positions of power in real life, step down or find a new thing when they feel they have done all they can and want to do something else, a new challenge, something they find fun/interesting. Its called moving on.

On example is Bill Gates, he the richest man in the world, but he is bored of Microsoft's he built it up achieved great things, windows runs on 95% of desktop computers in the world. That is an achievement. But now he has quit the day to day running of Microsoft and given up his power over the company (in some ways he still retains a shareholding) to focus on his AIDS and africa stuff, because that is his new challenge.

Personally i think Prittk is a guilty as many people in the SS of this. He should have found someone to p!@#$%^&* the source code on to. Who wanted to continue and maintaine the dev of continuum, when he got fed up of it, but he couldn't let go. Because of the lack of dev much damage has been done to continuum. Its stagnated, nothing has changed since 2002 in terms of the client..

Not stepping down when you should do is damaging to everyone including yourself.

You should spend the little time on this earth you have doing things you enjoy. When you stop enjoying what you are doing, stop doing it and do something you do find fun.

Don't let the whole game die, just certain aspects. Why chop down the perfectly fine tree if it has a few dead branches? Just prune the branches (in this case, the council, Pritt, anything related solely to SSC, and zones like Desert Storm and Halo).
