Hmm, I don't know much about directdraw it might just be it but on some zones where they have events with ship overtiles/under or whatever it's called you can ALT-Tab and replace the .lvl with one without tiles and it will remove the tiles set

 

so like mazes etc on zones you can see the path easily

I think there's a way to change the lvl altogether and actually remove tiles, making you go through walls... I'm not sure how to do it though
