Do you need computer keyboarding to study a career in Computers?

I dont think you need this !@#$%^&* unless you want to be an accountant.... I'm talking this class in highschool for !@#$%^&*ing nothing.... I keep finger pecking and !@#$%^&*. I do it at 40 wpm.

 

 

So do I need this class?

the class pace is too fastr and I don't feel like I'm getting anything useful out of this. It feels like i would need a couple years atleast to get the hang of it. but i'm failing right now as it is.

I'm not sure. In my school, this is the first year they started to have Keyboarding as a required class credit. No kidding, the class was a waste of my time: I have 10+ years of experience and type from 100 to 120 WPM with 95-99% accuracy (I usually don't ever make an error, put it this way).

I type quite well also, and I was offered this class in my Junior High School. I found it to be respectible in this light: There is a true-to-form methodology in typing. You have a "natural position" as they called it then, in which you place your fingertips so that the keys are found to be reached easier. I never quite understood that the class rwas graded by this simple arguement, since everyones' fingers and hands work similarly but differently. I would say that if you have never typed before and would like to learn a method to it, then this class is more for you, but for the major population out there who have typed before and have their own style, the class has no point. In other words, for most of us gamers, I agree.

those typing classes teach you how to type "properly" though i can !@#$%^&* well type a lot faster unproperly than properly...

and who cares about mistakes? thats what the "Backspace" key is for

Technically, to make it into the World Market these days, you need to type fast. I project within 5 years time, programs will be developped a dime a dozen. There are way too many programmers these days with super fast typing skills. Soon what's going to happen is that they're gonna hire guys who can type at 140wpm to program since they'll be able to whip out a program in less than 2 days.. Thats the average typing speed of most programmers. Pretty soon, programs are going to come cheap...

 

but keep in mind, this is only entry level programming where you are producing stock programs for companies. Once you move up the ladder, of course you will need to produce good quality programs but still you need to type fast. You get paid just a bit more. not a lot though.

 

already, our programming jobs are starting to go to India where Indians are starting to catch up in terms of technological knowledge (Read The World is Flat by Thomas Friedman) -- they type uber fast... average is 150 wpm. thats not bad. they can whip up a good program within 1 day (reason being is that they are so diligent and they barely make any mistakes in the process of programming that they can do it this fast)..

 

 

anyways, thats my perspective. i've been doing C++ and C and Python for many years and its starting to become a declining market for North Americans.

rofl, anyways, You don't really need to, but if you have a clerical ability and can type 75+ gross words per minute... than it's really good and it benefits in applications etc; including computer careers.

I've actually learned to type a !@#$%^&* of a lot faster since taking a keyboarding class 9 years ago. It is true that when your hands are on the "home keys" every key can be reached without you so much has having to look for a key.

 

By the time I was done I could do about 60wpm, which was one of the highest in my class. Note: we worked on keyboards, with the keys painted so you could not read the keys. And those keyboards were on new age type wrighters. There was no backspace. For the final you had to be able to type 30 wpm, without a single typo.

 

But today, who need to type things right? we have spell check that even tells you if your grammar is wrong.

You're going to be typing in pretty much any work field you go into anymore. There aren't too many jobs that don't involve some sort of computer and typing. If you're only typing at 40 wpm, and making as many errors as you made in that post, I don't see what the big deal is. It seems like you need that class. Once you finish it, I bet you'll be typing better, more accurately, and probably quite a bit faster. There is nothing wrong with learning how to type correctly. It can do nothing but benefit you in life.
