»Maverick Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 I would really recommend getting hosted at dreamhost.com, Polix. The prizes are very cheap while they provide a quite reliable service. Furthermore they have good support and lots of extra features you won't find that quickly with other hosts (for example; subversion). To make things even better, I have a promotion code you can use to get $97 off the prizes ($50 / $60 off for Month-To-Month Payments). Use this code: DREAMPROMOMAX . You can't really run programs at this host though, you really need a VPS for that. (I have one too which I primarily use for hosting due to the RAM limitation of the VPS.)
PoLiX Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 Can I do like we do now? With subdomains having their own control panels? That is my main concern. It frees me up to do as I need, and allows them to add/do what they need.
»Maverick Posted January 24, 2007 Author Report Posted January 24, 2007 I will check if it's possible. EDIT: It's possible to give permissions (including domains) to a user when creating what's called a "web id". You can also restrict a certain user in disk usage. Concluding, it's possible but very different from what you are used in cPanel.
»doc flabby Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 I would read some reviews on dreamhost before deciding on them experiences on them are mixed. Some people have experienced downtime and problems with them. Others have had no problems. http://www.webhostingtalk.com is good place to look for reviews of hosts. I wouldnt recommend hosting a forum like this on at dreamhost as they have quite stringent cpu and memory limits. Of course it depends what package you get. Im just saying be sure to read the TOS (as you should with any host)
L.C. Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 1and1.com By the way, you can setup a CPanel account on a subdomain.website.com. Just enter in the subdomain.website.com and wallah (!@#$%^&*uming website.com is the one with the Reseller/Super CPanel). However some things will be kinda glitchy and fghwds (MySQL and FTP conflicts), but it'll still work.
»Maverick Posted January 24, 2007 Author Report Posted January 24, 2007 I wouldnt recommend hosting a forum like this on at dreamhost as they have quite stringent cpu and memory limits. Of course it depends what package you get. Im just saying be sure to read the TOS (as you should with any host) They used to have such a thing but not anymore. Now if you only block the system or let it hang you will be contacted but even for such a forum that won't ever happen. Nonetheless, I choose Dreamhost because of the price. Not alot other hosts can give the same for the same price. (incl. 1and1)
»doc flabby Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 1and1.com = expensive and crap i would choose dreamhost over them.
»Maverick Posted January 24, 2007 Author Report Posted January 24, 2007 Why is it crap, doc? [splitting topic]
»doc flabby Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 Why is it crap, doc? [splitting topic]Because they stick you on a server that is hosting about 300/400 other sites and charge you though the nose for a slow !@#$%^&* site. Then again they don't use cpanel which is a plus. cpanel is a horrible program. Only works with out of date software, is buggy, overcomplicated and configures the server is a stupid way imo. rant over
»D1st0rt Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 I've had no problems with Dreamhost, granted its been all of 4 months
»1587200 Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 Just looking around Dreamhost's site, I can tell their items are incredibly over priced. Windows VPS's start at $144/mo for a base plan, that's B.S. right there. Their dedicated servers are even more of a joke. Plus they run $50 setup fees on webhosting accounts...$50?! Seriously. The market is so flooded with webhosters now, that there's no need to charge $50 setup fees to point and click.
»D1st0rt Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 VPS and dedicated aren't their core businesses, as it says on the page. Their model is set up primarily for shared hosting, which only has a setup fee for people going month to month with their plans. I personally paid $20 in October for an entire year.
»Maverick Posted January 24, 2007 Author Report Posted January 24, 2007 I must agree that Dreamhost isn't the best host for VPS or dedicated servers but that isn't their primary service.I have a VPS myself and I must say, I'm not doing alot more on it then hosting websites on it while it also takes some of my time to keep things updated and running. Shared hosting isn't much different if you are doing primarily hosting (imo). Dreamhost does have a different / custom panel but it works pretty well once you get used to it (I have used cPanel and I'm using Plesk on my VPS). EDIT: lol D1st0rt beat me to it
»1587200 Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 I don't care if it's not their primary service, it's still ridiculas pricing. Anyway, as far as this site, I would recommend a few of the admins pitch in and just get a dedicated server and do more than just host this site. With the dedicated you would have complete control over everything, plus you could host zones, maybe a biller, possibly some other continuum stuff, I dunno. $120 split between 3 or 4 admins isn't much, and you'd all have equal share of the server.
PoLiX Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 Honestly, in time was my plan. I'd like to begin offering hosting to all the major zones at cheap prices. Make things easier on them, and just ask they show the navbar (once debuged). But right now, my main priority is just getting SSCentral together, and I don't need server changes and issues screwin things up. So if Dedicated is how we have to go, that's how we go. Just need a solution for ourselves again, something solid, and little downtimes/issues.
»1587200 Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 I'd just stick with what you have now until the site is complete, then move over to the new server for the launch of the site once everything is done. That way you have little downtime between the sites.
PoLiX Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 Yeah. My only gut feeling is that i'm going to have to develop the site offsite just to get it done and running. Which is going to be a pain, but seems like how it'll have to be done. I'm tired of going to DoCk>, and just want to have full control over my own enviroment.
