LiveForce Posted January 5, 2007 Report Posted January 5, 2007 Going to make a definitive SS news site. Thinking of making it pretty simple, maybe using wordpress and inviting a couple of people from each zone to post news on the site as well as people to moderate and post general news. I don't want the site to do anything else, just be an independent news portal where any SS players know they can go. I got the domain subspacewire.com, and I'm thinking of giving it a newspaper theme.Anyway, I just need a couple of people to help me with it. Just drop me a line.
The Apache Posted January 5, 2007 Report Posted January 5, 2007 and you really think people will be bothered to look at it and post on it?
LiveForce Posted January 5, 2007 Author Report Posted January 5, 2007 that's cool, but I don't think it would matter too much if we just used a CMS. Though I'm open to suggestions!

»freakmonger Posted January 5, 2007 Report Posted January 5, 2007 I actually first had subspacenews.com online in Jan '03, but I recently whiped the slate clean and started over. I've already tried the whole get one person from TW, one from MG, one from DS, one from Chaos, etc thing. But it didnt work out as planned lol.

I've never heard of you. We're going to collaborate on this. Apathy won't get the community anywhere.
The Apache Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 of course i play ss, dipstick. i don't need to be heard about to put a comment on a forum. as i said, read freakmonger's post again.
»freakmonger Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 Well we are going to try and get the site ACTIVE, as before when I couldn't get enough help on the site it pretty much died because who likes doing all that work when nobody visits the site But I have already got 3 ppl willing to help with the site, so we will go from there and see where it goes. Since sshq shutdown, I have always said that ss news one central NEWS site, and a central FORUMS site. Well ssforum seems to have gotten their part done, now I can attempt to get the other part done. Which is kinda in a messed up situation because on the client/etc sshq is known as the 'offical' news site. Which as we all know has been down for a long time now.
rootbear75 Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 im willing to help on whatever site needs help
»1587200 Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 So sscentral won't have any news then? That's news to me.
»CypherJF Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 smong has a RSS aggregator at http://toktok.sscentral.com/ssnews.php i don't understand why we need yet another news site? My subspace posts used to be posted in there as well but I think my RSS feeds changed and no longer appear. Work with smong to have your site's feeds added to it. Or maybe you can do the same thing on a top-level domain but having dedicated authors won't do the trick anymore.
»freakmonger Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 lol never knew that existed. Well the "main" thing is there does need to be a news site on a top-level domain. Not subdomains on another site. Err I didn't say sscentral wouldn't have news did I? *right now* sscentral has FORUMS, no 'main news page' etc. *that I know of* Subspace is really in a tough spot because there is no "offical" website with news/downloads/discussions/etc like 99% of other games have. Downloads you have ssdownloads forums you have sscentral (and sscontinuum.com but wtf?) news you have the ssblog (not on a top-level domain but does a great job), ssbase (look how active it is, last post march '0) getcontinuum.com (just a big !@#$%^&* guide and a client download??) and I guess that RSS posted above (great, but again not on a top-level domain) Eitherway, i'm just trying to help the community out as much as possible. I was even going to setup a subspaceblogs.com and have mutlipile blogs so players could signup and do blogging there. But I feedback I got was that it wouldn't be worth the time as not many ss players would use it, so for *now* I have decided not to do it.
Ophie Posted January 7, 2007 Report Posted January 7, 2007 This is the problem with the SS community. It's composed of a group of people with different SS websites, but are not connected to a centralized source or endorsed by the centralized source (at the moment, SSCentral). This is what perpetuates disunity amongst the subspace sysops and leaders of the community (SS Council)... There are leaders who want things done their way - they're nothing more than egomaniacs who want power and status in the community. Drop your ego. SSCentral has become a joke - and no offense to Swift because I think hes doing a great job. But over a period of 5 years of attempting to create a new SS Site, nothing has been done. only a website has been launched previously, but was taken down a year later. The site offered nothing. And now I see a subspace gazette? Come on! Get a centralized subspace website going on first. Focus on the basics!
»Maverick Posted January 7, 2007 Report Posted January 7, 2007 smong has a RSS aggregator at http://toktok.sscentral.com/ssnews.phpActually, it's a program that downloads the website news and parses them so it can be displayed on another website. Get a centralized subspace website going on first. Focus on the basics! Totally agreed although I think freakmonger is just trying to help the community which is good
»1587200 Posted January 7, 2007 Report Posted January 7, 2007 Everyone wants to have their own site in the name of helping the community, yet it doesn't do anyone any good to have 1394 different "central" news sites. Quit buying domains, quit creating more sites, work together and make ONE site, instead of tons of little "one" sites. SSCentral has a proper domain, dedicated people, designers, a domain that's been around longer than the rest of yours, and a project already under way. Quit making more sites to inflate your e-ego and work together. subspacenews.com, subspace.ws, sscontinuum, ssbase, ssnewsletter, ssblog...ffs people, work together instead of seperate, then this game might actually have a chance of surviving. Put your re!@#$%^&*ed personal differences aside and help make ONE site.
»freakmonger Posted January 7, 2007 Report Posted January 7, 2007 Did I mention I made this in '03? Not like I just made it. And yes I know there is a "project underway". I already contacted vorbis (ssblog) awhile back to try and work together on one site but he didn't want to. And if (whenever) you can go to www.sscentral.com and have news/ss info (instead of a forum) that will be great. But until that happens you will always have a lot of "little sites". I said back in '99 that ss needs ONE news site. Back then we had sshq and ss.net. So you SAYING we need one site is nothing new. Quit making more sites to inflate your e-ego lol..I do a lot more for this community than hosting a $3 website. Funny thing is hardly anybody knows what it is So I really don't think me having the site up was done to inflate my e-ego. I've got the domain until '08 so why not use it
»1587200 Posted January 7, 2007 Report Posted January 7, 2007 Why not point it to sscentral and help them?
»freakmonger Posted January 7, 2007 Report Posted January 7, 2007 Good idea, and I will once the "project" is complete
Ophie Posted January 7, 2007 Report Posted January 7, 2007 As I said and have always have said, since the death of SS.net, subspace has gone to the tubes. My solution (and this might not be the only solution, nor is it a solution) is to re-buy Subspace.net. How so? Have everyone in the community donate to the cause. This will help to create a solidarity amongst the members of the subspace community. Though subspace.net or subspace.com (Last i heard, it was on sale for 5000) might be pricey, all the more reason why people will promote this game more in real life as well.. During the years SS.net has been taken down, also, society has given rise to greater 3D games and consoles like PS2, as S!@#$%^&* has pointed out to me. This is why the subspace population has gone down. Did the downfall of SS.net have anything to do with members leaving? Well think of it this way. During the 5 or so years that SS.net has been down, a generation of subspace players have moved on to greater and better things: college and work. SS.net, the central site to attract new generations is no longer available to attract the new generation. There's a generation gap atm and it will not fix itself by doing nothing, especially with the lack of SSCentral content. I don't know. But all i can say is, solidarity is what will help keep this game together.
»freakmonger Posted January 7, 2007 Report Posted January 7, 2007 umm wonderer owns subspace.net not sure who owns subspace.com
Ophie Posted January 7, 2007 Report Posted January 7, 2007 are you serious that he owns subspace.net? last i heard, it was AhmedF who was bitter against non-SVS zones, and thus, instead of asking the help of the nonSVSers to help him out with the site, decided to ask his SVS players to help him develop it. Nothing really came out of it other than a screenshot-sneak-preview. if ur wondering why it shows the contents of getcontinuum.com, it is all forwarded. Perhaps AhmedF saw it as a way to get more traffic to subspace.net -- more of a business opportunity.
