PoLiX Posted January 3, 2007 Report Posted January 3, 2007 So rather then totally fry my Processor, I've only been on for a few mins at a time throughout the day. Maybe 40mins total... SpeedFan - Temp2: 81*C I don't got the cash to just get a new heatsink, or thermal paste right now, so it's gonna be a while. Really has put a hinder on the progress on SSCentral. But not much was moving forward while Bajan was working on his new computer with the design aspect, and that is mostly what we we're waiting on.
rootbear75 Posted January 3, 2007 Report Posted January 3, 2007 want me to send you some thermal paste or a new heat sink?
PoLiX Posted January 3, 2007 Author Report Posted January 3, 2007 ok, so after getting tired of it, I decided to clean out the little dust there was inside of the case. Nothin too bad, but never know, we've been finishing up drywalling the livingroom lately (Remodeling the house) and figured maybe that !@#$%^&* causes more !@#$%^&* then regular dust. Well, beyond one of the clips on my mobo that holds my heatsink down being broken, all was fine. I cleaned out the dust, put on some thermal grease I found lying around on an P4 2.4ghz's heatsink I'm not using. And it is still overheating. And now i'm lead to believe it might have done more damage to my computer then just my processor. It wouldn't even turn on last night. And kept beeping at me. Now when I load a page with a lot of images, and leave it open, my video card keeps flashing on and off. Monitor doesn't lose connection, just goes black and then back. Sounds like I'm gonna have to build a new computer, so might be a while.
sil Posted January 3, 2007 Report Posted January 3, 2007 That totally sucks. Dust is like cancer for computers though. You might try to pick up a can of canned air and really clean out the computer. Though now that you mention drywall dust, it's been awhile, but I think that stuff may melt when exposed to really warm temperatures since it's made up of paper and plaster and such. That could be the real problem there.
Dav Posted January 3, 2007 Report Posted January 3, 2007 !@#$%^&* that sucks man. hope you can build a shiny new one soon. And dust is like the plague for computers, it caused my mobo to blow up about 9 months back.
rootbear75 Posted January 4, 2007 Report Posted January 4, 2007 You might try to pick up a can of canned air and really clean out the computer. That would not get rid of the dust. it will only blow it out of the comp (and into your nose, office, etc.)What you really want is a PC Vacuum that actually sucks up the dust. Its a little more expensive, but at least the dust wont be in your office where it can get back into ur comp.
Confess Posted January 4, 2007 Report Posted January 4, 2007 Hey! U removed my picture! =( Anyways, if theres anything you need me to do, Polix, just lemme know.

I think it fried it, and possibly damaged the mobo from the heat. I maxed out at 94*C last night when I was on it for like 30mins trying to find some parts online, and then after that, all the !@#$%^&* hit the fan. I think the big problem is the heatsink is also not solidly locked down to the mobo. It is a bottom clip, bottom right to be exact, when the case is standing up, so not like it is a top and it is trying to fall off of it. But my grandmothers had the same issue, broken clip, suddenly major overheating. Hers was a 775, so just replaced it, and it cooled right back down. Mine is a 478, so it is "part" of the motherboard (on most), and non-replaceable. I just need to find a new mobo, processor, and probably case. This computer has done me well for the past 2yrs now, time to move on. Although I'm gonna keep low end, and keep the 2.5gbs of PC3200, and AGP Video card for now. It runs Q4, NFSMW, Source. and COD3 at pretty high settings, so I'm fine with it. Just don't got the cash to go higher right now, especially since I owe 2 people money, and putting that off while I try and sort this out.
L.C. Posted January 4, 2007 Report Posted January 4, 2007 Nah. It is all almost 100% clean now. I think it fried it, and possibly damaged the mobo from the heat.Heh. It would be a good idea to dust out your PC atleast once every month to keep it efficient, clean, and allow its lifespan to be maximized (atleast by this degree). Usually the only place I have dust problems in my PC (since I have about 14 or more fans) is in my Power Supply. However that problem is apparently solved for me now ever since I got a nice and new power supply. I hate the dust. Many times in my past dust faked Power Supply death. It's scary. You start thinking your hardware is dying and you'll have to spend more money (in my case, $30 is already expensive...man, even $20). After some dusting with the ol' air compressor, everything seemed to work fine again. *whew* PoLiX, try the ePOX 8RDA3+ Pro motherboard if you're sticking with SocketA and AGP. Great motherboard. I bought 2 of these babies and use 1 of them. I won't EVER regret buying this motherboard. I haven't ever had a problem with it. According to my cousin who was using a 2GHz CPU (AMD?) and 1.5GB of RAM (PC3200+, and amazingly fast), the standard X700 that I used to own did an excellent job on COD2 on 800x600 with maximum settings. Playable FPS he says. I bought my X700 for $120. I would strongly recommend you go for one of the cards of X1600 (or above, I can't remember the model now ), as it only costs about $130.
Bajan Posted January 4, 2007 Report Posted January 4, 2007 1950XT is the top ATI atm, Pol what was your previous board?

I think it was the clip holding the heatsink down being broken, and not holding it to a full pressure contact. So it is like it is only cooling off onto part of the heatsink. When I bought it, was only 2 boards above it, and now, it is the oldest they still give full support to, sob. SVS Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 I am currently running duel 8800 GTXs in SLI. No need to worry about any graphical settings playing at 1920 resolution.
PoLiX Posted January 7, 2007 Author Report Posted January 7, 2007 hah. Yeah. I'm really debating... My car or my Computer... I want to !@#$%^&*ing get SSCentral done, i'm tired of issues coming up and slowing it down. Got a lot of content ready, just need the design and code done, and get something up and running finally. I am not dropping this. Once it is done, I can finally leave, and having no computer to get online (using my bros most the time), makes me care to less and less. So need to get it done... ha. If SSCentral was done... I'd say !@#$%^&* the computer, I barely use the internet as is, except to check on the forums, and hop on ss to say hi. Spent most my time on Ebay and 3Geez forums browsing car !@#$%^&* I couldn't afford 90% of anyways, so eh.
BigSlam Posted January 7, 2007 Report Posted January 7, 2007 Sorry to hear that polix hope everything works out and you get it working.
