Vivify Posted November 21, 2006 Report Posted November 21, 2006 I just re-installed Continuum 0.39pr1, since my Continuum 0.38 exe would not load. After clicking the icon, nothing happens except that my mouse shows its "loading" animation. When I look in the task manager, Continuum.exe is there, but it will simply not show up. To make matters worse, it won't even "end task" when told to. I checked the FAQ thread about this issue, and none of the matters seemed to help. I have only installed one new anti-spyware program since Continuum last worked. I tried uninstalling it, and had no success opening up Continuum. I've played Continuum for years, and really want to continue playing. If I could log in I can show you my "?usage" if you think I am a noob. Thanks for reading.
»SOS Posted November 21, 2006 Report Posted November 21, 2006 Try uninstalling/disabling any anti-virus programs and other protection software you may have. Not just "that one new program". If this does not help, do a start->run->msinfo32 and save it and post the saved file here. Maybe I'll be able to see what programs might be interfering from that log.
Slipped Posted November 21, 2006 Report Posted November 21, 2006 This seems to happen to a lot of people. I have never heard of any definite way to fix the problem other than just waiting. For now, you should be able to play by right clicking the Continuum icon, then click "Run as". The downside to that is the client won't save things such as macros and chats.Again, this always seems to fix itself over time (it's what I had to do). All you can do for now, unless someone else knows of something different, is to use the method I told you.
Vivify Posted November 22, 2006 Author Report Posted November 22, 2006 Alright, I got continuum to work by doing "Run As" but it won't let me download any zones, meaning I can't play them. (unable to write blablablazone.lvl)
»SOS Posted November 22, 2006 Report Posted November 22, 2006 Yes, ignore that advice. The "Run as" method is not a solution.
Slipped Posted November 22, 2006 Report Posted November 22, 2006 The only temporary solution that I know of that allows you to play. You can always have people send you the zone files needed. The only other thing I have heard that fixes it is to reformat. Edit: On second thought.. If I remember correctly, I was able to play normally on a different user account (on XP). If you have XP, you might try that.
»SOS Posted November 22, 2006 Report Posted November 22, 2006 Temporary solutions are not solutions in my eyes. But yes, trying a second user is a good thing. Since the annoying software might only be on one user. But first of all, uninstall or disable the programs listed in the FAQ topic. As I understood, this has not been fully done yet.
Vivify Posted November 22, 2006 Author Report Posted November 22, 2006 I have something called "guard.exe" would that be the problem? I can't seem to close it or end task it. Under add/remove programs, I only have one anti-spyware program that I have had for years (and played continuum with), and not the wierd "guard" program.
»SOS Posted November 23, 2006 Report Posted November 23, 2006 Maybe. Post it here and I'll check it out. Also, uninstall/disable that anti-spyware program that you've had for years. That could be causing the issue.
Guest Guest Posted November 24, 2006 Report Posted November 24, 2006 I'm having this problem on one of my alternate computers. Somehow I managed to get it to load once, but it wouldn't load the game in fullscreen mode. After that, I can't get the program to load at all - I have the same loading problem. I've tried killing all possible user processes that were running in the task manager and still couldn't get it to load a second time. This makes me think it's either a system process or the NVIDIA drivers.

In Win2k/XP mode, you get the "Revolving Door" problem. I even upgraded the video drivers and still have the problem. Once thing I did notice in the video drivers (old and new) is that there was no option allowing me to change "Max Frames to Render Ahead".
Vivify Posted November 27, 2006 Author Report Posted November 27, 2006 Still not working Here's a screenshot of my task manager processes: http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/3020/processesks8.jpg

Fenrix Posted December 10, 2006 Report Posted December 10, 2006 I was having the same problemI left the continuum game exe running for about 12hrs and eventually it came up with and error saying it could not load the dsound.dll - which is a directx dll file, i presume it may have to do with some kind of direct x compatability error. it seems to not have the problem on older slightly out of date computers. (edit) it also seems to mess with the csrss process run by windows xp while it is jumping around in the task list
Apocalypse's Posted December 10, 2006 Report Posted December 10, 2006 why the !@#$%^&* is your csrss.exe taking up so much cpu? Since that system process is responsible for creating continuum or any "threads", try searching for a virus, or somehow repair that process. Obviously it probably is high cos continuum is trying to open but it could be something with that.
Fenrix Posted December 10, 2006 Report Posted December 10, 2006 I just checked the old subspace help files and i think on like the second or third page it tells you how to fix the problem, it seems to be some kind of error in the way subspace was designed. Here is the original help stuff, i dont know if it will work properly using xp but Im going to give it a try later Microsoft’s DirectX One of the requirements of SubSpace is DirectX. DirectX is a driver set that contains instructions (in files like DDRAW.DLL and DSOUND.DLL) that makes programming games easier within environments that support DirectX. Please note that we only provide the program and any technical question on problems installing DirectX should be referred back to Microsoft at www.microsoft.com. Message from Rob Keir I was able to duplicate some people's problems of missing DirectX DLLs and DLLs not being able to be linked to. Here's the story... "SubSpace" uses two DirectX DLL files at runtime, DDRAW.DLL and DSOUND.DLL. These are usually found in your \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. If you manually delete these DLLs, manually copy over the DLLs with other/same versions or even just move the files somewhere else on your disk you'll be in trouble, even if you restore the files back to their original directory afterward. "Subcheck" will report that it has found the DLLs but can't link to them and "SubSpace" will say that it has a problem with DDRAW.DLL and/or DSOUND.DLL and won't start up. This is a peculiar problem considering that restoring the original files to their original directory should have no effect! So, here's what you can do :- If you haven't already done so, download the "SubSpace" game from our Web site (http://www.vie.com/subspace/files.htm) and install it. DON'T run it yet. If you haven't already done so, download the DirectX install program from our Web site (http://www.vie.com/subspace/files.htm). DON'T install it yet. REBOOT YOUR MACHINE. When it's finished booting DON’T start "SubSpace" or any other program that is likely to use DirectX stuff. If you have already installed a version of the DirectX software or have any remnant of DirectX still on your machine then :- If you have them, make a backup of the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DDRAW.DLL and \WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DSOUND.DLL files, preferably to a floppy disk. Delete the files \WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DDRAW.DLL and \WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DSOUND.DLL. Run the DirectX.exe install file. Note that this will (very rudely) reboot your machine. "SubSpace" should work now. (Probably). One thing to be aware of, if you delete the files DDRAW.DLL and DSOUND.DLL and then reboot your machine, Windows95 may fail to start. You will then be forced to start the machine in DOS mode (select command prompt only from the startup menu) and then copy your backup DirectX files (see 4) back into the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory and reboot. So DON'T reboot your machine directly after deleting the files! Rob KeirSubSpace Team, VIE - i hope that is what the problem is though
ravendon Posted December 11, 2006 Report Posted December 11, 2006 Mine does the same thing. 3 continuum.exe processes with different process ids. Unable to end task on any of them. Virus scanner is aol antivirus, based on Kaspersky. The newest version, which has been disabled. The only thing I can do is power off the computer, uninstall continuum and reinstall it.I do not want to do this just to play a game. It's a shame, since I've been playing continuum and before that subspace for a long !@#$%^&* time. I just re-installed Continuum 0.39pr1, since my Continuum 0.38 exe would not load. Fenrix Posted December 11, 2006 Report Posted December 11, 2006 nope thats just the original VIE webpage, its there because i copied it from the help file that comes with Subspace.following those steps fixed mine people, so give it a try, you can get the latest Directx from any number of places.
