Drake7707 Posted November 3, 2006 Report Posted November 3, 2006 Creating a 3D map is much more difficult than a 2D map, not only because it adds an extra dimension, but everything is defined as meshes, and not sprites anymore. You can't just pick a sprite from the tileset and place it in a 3D world. You'll have to either draw entire 3D models with textures and place them, or you have to use predefined stuff. (tho when models are created, it's not that hard to overlay another texture to have a seemingly different object) I see gouroud shading already works pretty neat in the engine, is there also any use of shading maps and/or reflection maps ?
Witchie NL Posted November 3, 2006 Report Posted November 3, 2006 in 2D you have.__|__| and in 3D..__/__/||__|/ so instead of making 1 image for a tile you need to make 6 images for 1 object. If the object is square.
Drake7707 Posted November 3, 2006 Report Posted November 3, 2006 you work with polygons, not with sprites. But yes true, you *could* make an editor that breaks everything into cubes, tho if you want 100% accuracy on collision detection, you should use polygons that exactly describe the geometry of the object.Cubes can be used as bounding boxes around the objects to quick check the collision (like you do when you ray trace)
MillenniumMan Posted November 3, 2006 Author Report Posted November 3, 2006 Ike, glad to see you're still alive and well. L.C., sprites emitting from ships/missiles/ect take less processing power than more models to generate. Admittedly, the engine thruster sprites that exist currently look bad, but those are placeholders. If you have better flamies, plz post on the board. Drake, reflections are not implemented, shading comes from in-game lighting and texture tricks. Witchie NL: this is a stop sign ___ /____\| STOP| \____/ || || and this is a bunny: ___||,(_,__,) Ok, it doesn't translate well on the board

Wild Luck Posted November 4, 2006 Report Posted November 4, 2006 i downloaded a 3d version of subspace and it sucked u cant make subspace 3d, its a 2d game, it would just be too hard to play
Drake7707 Posted November 4, 2006 Report Posted November 4, 2006 that depends how easy the controls are, but you won't be able to know if it sucks or not until you have a zone with lots of ppl in it.
»doc flabby Posted November 4, 2006 Report Posted November 4, 2006 3d subspace is a new game. It could be a fun game (hopefully will be!) it is not subspace. its like worms 3d is not the same as wormsi could go on
Aileron Posted November 4, 2006 Report Posted November 4, 2006 Just say no to finite ammo. Yes its unrealistic, but has anyone ever played a game in which ammo conservation did anything other than annoy the heck out of you?
Drake7707 Posted November 4, 2006 Report Posted November 4, 2006 basic weapons should be unlimited, more advanced should be limited (maybe an division like in tyrian, where you have left side right side, rear and front guns, power/energy for a shield by a generator etc etc). I'm sure you all know tyrian.
L.C. Posted November 4, 2006 Report Posted November 4, 2006 basic weapons should be unlimited, more advanced should be limited (maybe an division like in tyrian, where you have left side right side, rear and front guns, power/energy for a shield by a generator etc etc). I'm sure you all know tyrian.I think all default things should be a clone of the SVS settings; infinite ammo included. The user should be able to customize/set things like finite ammo at their personal preference.
Dav Posted November 5, 2006 Report Posted November 5, 2006 basic weapons should be unlimited, more advanced should be limited (maybe an division like in tyrian, where you have left side right side, rear and front guns, power/energy for a shield by a generator etc etc). I'm sure you all know tyrian. this is why guns should be charged and recharge with time. would be ok if you use them well but if you just fly about holding fire you will have a problem. not much different to the energy conservation we have in ss now.
Witchie NL Posted November 5, 2006 Report Posted November 5, 2006 should be a cargobay. Where you can store certain weapons which can be bought with dollar's/euro's/rasjadafar credits or w.e. And you get that cash by killing.
Drake7707 Posted November 5, 2006 Report Posted November 5, 2006 it also depends if you have ships which stats are reset when killed, or which have ac!@#$%^&*ulated experience
Witchie NL Posted November 6, 2006 Report Posted November 6, 2006 maybe an idea for server options? if its getting online?
Smong Posted November 6, 2006 Report Posted November 6, 2006 Yes its unrealistic, but has anyone ever played a game in which ammo conservation did anything other than annoy the heck out of you?In Counter Strike when I knew I probably wouldn't make it through a round I would only buy 1 clip of ammo, so when I died and the enemy picked up my gun there were hardly and bullets left, at which point hopefully a teammate shoots them in their frustration. Too bad you can't do this anymore in Source they made ammo free, now you get full clip + full ammo at the start of every round. So yeah it doesn't annoy me but I think I probably annoyed a few people back in the day.
Witchie NL Posted November 6, 2006 Report Posted November 6, 2006 Id say keep the finite ammo and keep it that you can decide the amount of weapons from each type yourself. but again this is a server problem. This needs to be decleared in a server. Not the client itself
»jabjabjab Posted December 28, 2006 Report Posted December 28, 2006 Heh.. Mullenium.. I think Releasing to the public is a bad thing atm.. give it to the people you know are specialized in theis catagory like True_Vision or Cybersnipe and The ASSS dude. G man.. yeah. w/e . just remember, you cant handle special new equipment into a random guys hands that dosent know what they hay he's doing. I've been Trying to make this zone for 2 years with this kindof software.. didnt know how to do it until i heard of this today. though im glad you didn't give up Id love to use it for my SS3D Server and SS3D Monopoly zone because it is the best idea ive had ever. though i wont tell it because i know people steal idseas from forums so... I also have ideas for the Map editor. Make it a giant cube.. but with polygon things.. you should make dots on the creases of the lines or corners of the boxes and you can drag an image to the box and have properties for sides and etc. so everything can match up to be where you dont hit a invisable nothing of a tile. it's like How they create the animation movies exept you know its limited numbers and with how the game works. so this is it MM I rely on you to ge this done. and id love to help with the ideas for the Map editor <3 JabJabJab
»D1st0rt Posted December 29, 2006 Report Posted December 29, 2006 I fail to see how releasing this to the public could possibly be a bad thing
The Apache Posted December 29, 2006 Report Posted December 29, 2006 agreed with d1st0rt. it's not as if everything anyone made will actually be implemented into the new game would it?
L.C. Posted December 30, 2006 Report Posted December 30, 2006 Personally I say that MillenniumMan should keep this closed source and work it until it's done. Keep it strictly professional, formal, simple, and compact. Professionalism ftw. Of course, making it open source at the end wouldn't be bothering. Some consessions have to be made in order to get a working game out of this. I still haven't been able to get a hold of Warhunter or T4 with their old contacts, I've had to do most of this myself since pulling it out of mothballs a couple months ago. If you have better icons available or something, plz post em.Does any of my Photoshop work take interest to you?http://www.hlrse.net/Qwerty/mytemplates/jsvs-wip5.gif
MillenniumMan Posted December 30, 2006 Author Report Posted December 30, 2006 (edited) Nice frontend for a zone-dedicated client. I take it the right side of the panel will be for HTML and stuff?I was talking about in-game gfx and the like for a newer version of the client. I found out why I can't compile a release version for everyone. WindowsXP made all my folders read only, so a compiled version can't possibly exist. And when I try to turn them back from read only, they revert to read only and its PISSING ME OFF! BTW, Bak turned everyone's early christmas present into a lump of coal. L.C. Posted December 30, 2006 Report Posted December 30, 2006 I was talking about in-game gfx and the like for a newer version of the client.Kind of why I shown that to you. Do you suppose I could be of some minimal graphical use? Perhaps I can design the client root menu using this style. Apparently the font I have that I used for those buttons seem to be exactly (or just a pixel or so off) the same as the one VIE used. I admire even my own work. I found out why I can't compile a release version for everyone. WindowsXP made all my folders read only, so a compiled version can't possibly exist. And when I try to turn them back from read only, they revert to read only and its PISSING ME OFF!Try backing the files up onto a webserver (or something where you would take off the read-only) and reinstall Windows? :S
»jabjabjab Posted December 31, 2006 Report Posted December 31, 2006 Closed Source FTW. From what I'm seeing with the source code, is that you need so much more than ASSS used to make their own server. More code, more crap for hackers, etc. Lol. I'm not saying this is completly true, but I go for Closed source. Mill Man, if you can, tell us about you're ideas towards the Map editor. I can't wait to have so much more to create with this new stuff. JabJabJab
James1293 Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 (edited) basic weapons should be unlimited, more advanced should be limited \kinda like thors right now? should be a cargobay. I'm dying to try it. And does Thirdspace have a website? EDIT: lol i just noticed the last date on this... i found the page off of google ... i probably brought this up in the topic list Edited May 24, 2007 by James1293
