Does anybody know if the origional 3d models of the subspace ships are available, or even a recreation? I see that ssdownloads has some "high res images with backdrops" (example: http://www.subspacedownloads.com/files/lrg_javelin.jpg ) that look BEAUTIFUL but I would really love the origional source files or whatever these are rendered from.

Basically I want to make a shipset similar to the stock shipset but with some signifigant changes that would most easily be made with modifications to the origional models.

There was a Continuum 3D zone for a while, everything was rendered. I thought it looked really neat but it never caught on... probable because of the huge download and maybe the server load. I no longer have the zone files. Perhaps someone else does? No reason to remake what has already been created.

I made a warbird with blender once, I can't remember if I released the source file but I'll attach it here anyway.

Here are the renders if anyone wants to use them:

http://toktok.sscentral.com/dump/ship1.png

download the rolls

I think the .blend file should have the rotation script embedded in it. It's not very detailed, but when rendered at 36x36 no one will know.

Edit: Due to multiple forum upgrades a) the attachment got fried B) invision attachment system sucks. I have removed the attachment, PM me for the file or look down this thread I'm linking to a temporary upload.

Yeah I saw that when looking at some of the 3d rotation threads. Looks pretty good. Did you ever do any of the other ships?

Death+ says he has them but says they're for "SSCI Only" because he wants to "keep it in the family" and not provide resources for people doing "noob zones." I doubt he really has them.

Death, aside from being a !@#$%^&*, is a liar. Those ship models (the one you brought up earlier) were made by Juan, and to my knowledge he never released the models.

Don't say "WTF? First thing to say in almost 3 years is "yep smile.gif " ?"

I have all the in-game models, half the sourcecode, and a !@#$%^&*load of problems with collisions in the game. Still trying to retool, but I also have a life outside SS

Maybe we can try to contact him. :o Website expires in July 2007, ought to archive the entire website. -_-

EDIT :: I called and left him a message. -_-

animations to 3D models are quite impossible. You don't know what the depths are of each triangle to build a triangle mesh. You either have to redesign them using a 3D studio, or ask the owner of those 3D models. You could extract the textures tho, but those animations should be 2000x2000 or something to have a detailed texture map

(I could use those in wavefront obj format for my raytracer program test tho :D )

I think it would be possible to convert those animations into shipsets though

I think it would be possible with a ton of mathematics and a major headache, and a perhaps some CPU-Power. Of course it wouldn't be perfect, but the resultant could be perfected as best as possible by hand. By taking a photo of say like a building at an angle, one of Microsoft's WIP programs (or other companies/scientists/whatever - I saw this technology in developement on Slashdot) it can transform it into a 3D model.

Again, of course it wouldn't be perfect - but it would be a better start than nothing. It would probably take a lot of time to make a calculator for a project like this, as it would have to take all those split-second still angle shots (top, bottom, front, back, left/right) and try to put it together like a puzzle...or maybe if you put it a little more CPU effort it could also use the animation as a whole to make the calculations.
