Emblazon Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 North is rarely used for what it was originally intended for. All-in-all, it adds nothing to the focus of pub, which is the soccer game. Players rarely go north to collect the flags. This part of the map had been removed at one point, and it came back when the zone had to be restored. So, this time around, I thought I'd ask you, the players, how you feel. Do you want it up there or not? If so, it'll stay. If not, it'll get replaced with blank space, and the safe zones will be modified to be in each corner, like the map in ?go publicbeta. Please post your feedback here. Quote
Trip' Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 SNOo, tis is a perfect time to shrinken the pub map as well to speed up the ball game. After a good game gets goin in the current map and one team wins, all the players immediately spec because of bein tired of playin the game. That is becuase the map is so big and it takes forever for a game to be played. With a smaller map the game will be sped up a bit and 2 or 3 games can be played without a player gettin tired. I just thought that while gettin rid of north, this can be a perfect time to shrinken the map as well. Quote
Incomplete Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 Shrink the map possibly, I wouldn't mind doing that myself but I think the north base should stay. Quote
The Cubbies Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 Is there a reason it should stay? Who uses it? Quote
»Purge Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 I'd say change the map completely... Quote
Emblazon Posted September 19, 2006 Author Report Posted September 19, 2006 exactly. like i said, it only takes away from what the main focus of pub is intended to be, soccer. the base is a good design, good concept, but wrong gameplay. it would work well for an event, but not as an option in pub. 17th's description is "Tactical Soccer Basing Action", and theres no soccer up north. i accdiently voted no to my own poll tho  Quote
NBVegita Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 all I can say to that is: Rofl. Quote
Delic Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 Yeah.. what can I say. In the state that 17th has been in since a long time now, I don't think it really matter what you do. I always believed that sticking to the "true 17th", (which to me means sticking to the theme and the ships and arena settings that go with it) was always the answer. But it's been so long since this has been like that, that the players really lost the sense of what 17th used to be, and got used to.. this. The truth is, 17th hasn't been living up to its name since many moons back now, and I doubt that'll change anytime soon. Good night and happy new year. Quote
Incomplete Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 The map feels naked without it. It is part of 17th and part of the new-old tradition. IF the zone is about soccer then why do we have killing sprees and bounty records? No one seems to like balling anymore. Quote
NBVegita Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 Well note the fact that the 17th parallel was designed around the concept of the actual 17th parallel geographically, and it was a north vs south nam-style combat. Quote
Incomplete Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 Why don't you put the !top100 back instead. Also make a ranking system. Quote
Trip' Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 We should just worry about making changes to the map first and not worry about bringing top100 or making a ranking system just yet. We should just worry about making a way to speed up the soccer game by having the map smaller and making the map to where the soccer game is the most relevant part. We can worry about top100 and other add-ons later. One thing at a time. Quote
Incomplete Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 Why change a pub when you have no one to play it anyway? Quote
NBVegita Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 I don't think removing north base is going to have any effect on the current population, as you have stated noone uses it anymore. Thusly by removing it (not saying its a bad or good idea) it won't effect the population, or gameplay, because as of now its just decoration. Noone goes up there, so I don't expect this to help out with gameplay or population. Quote
Outnumberd Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 What if you combined the flags into the soccer bases? People would have both flagging and soccer. Besides its nice to have bonus points for getting flags but the top base is way out of the way. Quote
Trip' Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 That was done before, and that is why I think our last pubmap before complex was the best one. No north, flags in the bases, and little nooks and crannies were added to the bases over time. One in particular allowed me to score through the tubes, which was just plain sexy. I think that pub map would be the best one to have, on a smaller size of course. Quote
Jayfortyfive Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 While I agree with some of the arguments for north, that it is part of at least this generation of 17th's tradition, I still think that it just provides more of a distraction to the balling game. Yes this has been said already, and rightly so. The only problem with removing the north is that 17th starts to mold into something that looks like powerball zone with different settings. Either way, I still voted aye on proposition 121 - Removal of north base. Quote
Incomplete Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 If people don't use the base then it can't be a distraction and would do no harm in keeping it there. 17th doesn't look right without it, it isn't broken so why fix it? Fix this, you want to enforce soccer then why can't we get credits for balling? Quote
SeVeR Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 What you've always had in 17th is two populations of players:1. Those who fly around aimlessly and kill2. Those who base. Unfortunately those who base are split across the map. With a small pop this creates a vicious circle of fewer people playing followed by the game getting less interesting for those who still are playing and so on. So what i propose is bringing the bases closer together but keeping the centre. You bring all the basers into closer proximity for a more enjoyable fast paced game. Then as a result you'll probably get the aimless killers coming in to try and get cheap kills in that area also. Something like this: I don't know if someone else has been thinking the same sort of thing, but its what i think will work. Then you could make the flagging game more high-priority without detracting from the soccer too much. Quote

Emblazon Posted September 23, 2006 Author Report Posted September 23, 2006 Why change a pub when you have no one to play it anyway? For your information, we get 20+ on a daily basis, with at least 4v4 in pub every day. If that's no one, then fine. Albeit, they are on during very early hours in your timezone, but that has always been a problem for 17th. There aren't that many European players as compared to the NorthAmerican players. Perhaps you could get some of the old Euros to start playing agian, guys like naedhaha and JIMTHECHIN (start playing again u freaky !@#$%^&*). Quote
Incomplete Posted September 24, 2006 Report Posted September 24, 2006 Fix this, you want to enforce soccer then why can't we get credits for balling? You do... I scored 74 goals in one game and didnt get one credit for it. They have no need to come back to the zone, whats the point? to sit in spec? Quote

I like that idea, but north should still be removed, with spawning in the "center" where the greens are located. This should increase the speed of the game and make the action more focused. Quote
SeVeR Posted September 25, 2006 Report Posted September 25, 2006 Yes, i never suggested otherwise, spawning should be in the center (sorry for the typo). Maybe at first it would be best to remove north, at least until the population gets bigger. Quote
