Incomplete Posted July 7, 2006 Report Posted July 7, 2006 Hey, I'm having trouble networking two PCs together and my xbox. It used to be working all fine for a very long time then it suddenly stopped working. I went and fooled around with properties and probably made everything alot worse. It worked when I reset the router thing but then it stopped again the day after and ive not been able to get it going again. Can anyone help?
PoLiX Posted July 8, 2006 Report Posted July 8, 2006 If you reset the router and it worked fine, there is a good chance the problem lies in the router, not your computer. What type of router is it?Brand, How many Ports, maybe a model # would help.
Incomplete Posted July 8, 2006 Author Report Posted July 8, 2006 I can't find a brand, just says 10/100 Fast Ethernet Switch.Model number: TAC-8309.It has 8 ports.
»SOS Posted July 8, 2006 Report Posted July 8, 2006 Hrm. Cheapo routers are known to overheat and start randomly screwing stuff up. Could be that, if it is a generic cheap one. Have you tried another reset? Can you ping one computer from the other?
PoLiX Posted July 8, 2006 Report Posted July 8, 2006 I might be wrong, but last I checked, a switch was just to connect local computers to each other, not internet to computers.
Incomplete Posted July 9, 2006 Author Report Posted July 9, 2006 It connected all the PCs to the internet before. I don't know why its just stopped working. I have tried another Reset.I don't know how to ping my other computers :/
»SOS Posted July 9, 2006 Report Posted July 9, 2006 Yes, it would seem that your switch is nothing more than a switch. This means that it is completely unrelated to your internet connection - routers do that. A switch is not a router. Describe your network starting fro m outside your house. What wire comes in? What is that wire connected to? What kind of wires go from that device to where? And such. Secondly, is there any device that you "Connect" to the internet or is it always on? Is one of your computers sharing the network? Thirdly, tell me what items are listed under Control Panel->Network Connection on both your computers. Just the main items, no need for any details.
Incomplete Posted July 14, 2006 Author Report Posted July 14, 2006 I'm going to buy a hub thing tonight, my friend has one that i can buy. I'll see if it works then i'll get back to you on it.
Incomplete Posted July 25, 2006 Author Report Posted July 25, 2006 The answer was my network card was broken, the switch lets the other PCs connect to the internet now.
