Ok here's the deal.

I always play in safe mode, right. K.

Well, when I play in regular xp, it's usually to play Diablo II or Take screenshots in continuum.

So, I go and create a xp account to log on, I click it. it starts loading, then a pop-up comes and says something like:

"Failed to load application explorer.exe..etc"

I restarted comp, recreated and everything.

I tried running a system scan but my anti-virus programs are out-dated, my friends dad is a computer wiz. In 2 weeks he will install a foolproof anti-virus and spyware, but until then I need your help.

Any ideas or anti-viral program suggestions?

PS:Problem is worse, it's now affecting me in safe mode.

Erm... what is the problem? You can't log in with a new account? Make yourself clear, man!

Only explorer? Anything else?

If it's only explorer, I recommend you get a working explorer or reinstall windows. Maybe a trojan is not working well. Get explorer from someone else and copy it over. If you can use the computer somehow, you can zip and post the explorer.exe here so I can see if it's ok.

If other things are erroring well, there might be more things at play. In that case, do this:

Run Prime95 for an hour and memtest86 for 4-5 hours. See if they find any errors (they test the CPU and memory).

I can't say much about anti-virus, since I never use them and I remove all trojans manually, without any AV...

Erm... well, let's try the manual route a bit:

Try Winternals Autoruns and disable any suspicious startup programs.

If you're not sure what the bad stuff is, save the log from autoruns and post it here so I can tell you what to try disabling.

Also try RootkitRevealer. Maybe your computer is infected with a crappily made erroring rootkit.

If Continuum runs (at all) then it is not an old-fashined virus. Well, I haven't seen those in many many years, so heh. Yeah, those are quite dead.

All in all, clarify the issue.

Basically, every time I log on, it doesn't show the desktop, the taskbar at bottom. all I can do is use ctrl+alt+del and open firefox manually through that

are you the irs? this is what he posted on another forum

i have an win Xp pro and for some reason its either a faulty error or a virus, my computer now has nothing on my desktop and the only way i open a window is by pressing ctrl alt del and in task manager and run task and typing c:\windows. i cannot open any .exe execpt for a I.E i cannot scan for viruses, althought i went to trend micro and scanned and found 2 viruses and got rid of them, yet it still doesnt work, cant left click. task bar is gone too, cant create a new user, rundll32 isnt working. cant do system restore. cant open regedit. and like i said, the only thing i can open is an internet explorer and access to internet is fine. here a pic of what it would look like:

(the half globe thingy NIS will not show, desktop themes will not show, and the blue line at the bottom (taskbar) will not show, this is another computer, all it would have is the task manager and run task)

If not it looks like you have a viruse. Time for a format

When all else fails: norton antivirus 2006 (even a 15 day trial) + search & destroy. It has yet to fail me and I manage 50+ machines at work with dumb!@#$%^&* users.

And you can't start explorer manually?

Anyway, here's explorer, try replacing yours or running this one. I'm thinking it could be some explorer add-on that's causing problems... do the autoruns thing and post the saved log here if this explorer does not work.

No, the file is c:\windows\explorer.exe, totally unrelated to IE and any desktop icons. Explorer IS the desktop, basically.

Also, if it says file in use or something (can't overwrite), then just rename the original explorer.exe and copy the new one in.

Ok

I did this:

Unzipped the explorer you posted to my desktop. Copied and pasted in c:/windows/

Also renamed original one to a weird name.

it should work now right?

Well, you replaced the exe correctly. If that was the cause, it might work blum.gif

Or it could be something entirely different that's causing this.

perhaps your s!@#$%^&* registery key has been altered by some trojan,

save the following as a "somename.reg" file and run it:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"S!@#$%^&*"="Explorer.exe"
"Userinit"="%windir%\system32\userinit.exe"

Jowie, be more specific. How do I save that.. where do I put it, or w/e.

As for Bargeld, I downloaded the trial for norton 2006, i can't install it. Safe mode won't allow, and normal mode is !@#$%^&*ed and it doesn't work.

I used avg to scan my system32 folder and found 1 virus infecting my wininet.dll (Virus is called Win32/Nsag, I think) Can someone copy their wininet.dll and post it here so I can replace mine? Deleting it caused big problems, and I had to put it back.

As far as the registry file goes, create a new text do!@#$%^&*ent anywhere, copy his code, save it as a .reg file, and double-click it. You should be prompted to add the info to your registry.

Doesnt' matter where it's saved.

I'll try that when I get home, I gtg now. SOS, thanks, I replaced my wininet.dll file with urs and I scanned my system32 folder, found no viruses. Yoink, thanks for telling me. I had a .reg file, I just changed the code in it and ran it. It uploaded the code to the registry. I will see if any of this worked when I get home.
