I highly recommend Foobar2000 for playing music in subspace . It has been developed for music professionals but it suits our purposes admirably. It has a low overhead so it has less impact on game performance than Winamp and Windows Media Player (it even falls within the 17th Parallel League limits so you can play music while in a tournament). Its a 500kb download for the lite version, 2MB for the special edition so everyone can get a copy quickly and its all freeware. It supports multimedia keyboards out the box. It handles streaming so you can listen to webradio in game. It has a replaygain analyzer so you can play all your songs at the same volume without having to constantly switch. Handles almost any format imaginable and comes with some very nice DSP plugins (it can use standard ones so you can borrow from winamp if you want).

-*BAD WORD*- its just a perfect music player in my eyes smile.gif

Ok, it doesn't have fancy a lot of visualizers or skinning (you can make your own) but it is the best quality music player I've ever used.

It tends top drop my framerate lots and create momentary spikes whenever it changes tracks. It has been known to cause visible lag even on fairly high spec machines. Maybe you've just got a great system...

It can handle plenty of programs at the same time but playing music is always going to use (lots of) resources. Doesn't anyone else get even a slight drop in FPS or any slowdowns?!

winamp v2.72 runs way smoother than v3.x

I'm on an athlon 1Ghz with 384 PC133 RAM and a Radeon 7200 and I get minimal performance decreases, even during song changes. Without winamp playing: 230 fps, with winamp: 220.

The only catch to this is VBR mp3's. Variablt bit rate mp3's alwaays chug my machine when playing, but that is to be expected. There is no reason to use VBR encoding anyway, in this day and age of broadband connections.

FYI, listening to a CD shouldn't hurt perforance hardly at all, so you may consider that option too.

I've created a program to control Winamp using your keyboard. Sphonk made one before, but it doesn't want to work for me on XP and his used a keyboard hook, mine uses pure API (GetAsyncKeyState) to sense key presses. This program is also offers fully customizable key settings for each Winamp function.

If you would like to try it out navigate to http://p-soft.org, click 'Products' and it should be the first on the list (screen shot is also available at the same page).

Requirments:

Windows

Winamp 2.x

If you want to use this with Winamp3, download the following. Thanks to Darkflare for pointing this out.

For those of you who get it and use it, i hope you enjoy it. For those of you who don't, you're missing out!

piss, you just keep pumping out those things to help music control inside the game dont you $$ keep up the work.

edit: you could probably use a winamp2 plugin manager to try and use the plugin in winamp 2, ill try it out and tell you the outcome.

edit2: success, install the winamp2 plugin manager and the stuff will work with winamp3.

Too tired to explain the origins of "foobar". Suffice it to say the term existed a long time before the band. There is an option to set global hotkeys in Foobar2000 so you can use the keyboard shortcuts from within continuum. Haven't tried it myself so if someone wants to experiment...
