X`terrania Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 When I'm a dictator, remind me not to trust the germans. German Intelligence Gave U.S. Saddams Defense Plan, Report Says By Michael R. Gordon In providing the do!@#$%^&*ent, German officials offered more significant help to the U.S. than their government has publicly admitted. WASHINGTON, Feb. 26 - Two German intelligence agents in Baghdad obtained a copy of Saddam Hussein's plan to defend the Iraqi capital, which a German official passed on to American commanders a month before the invasion, according to a classified study by the United States military. Saddam Hussein's plan for the defense of Baghdad, obtained by German agents and provided to the United States in February 2003, a month before the war, according to a study by the American military. In providing the Iraqi do!@#$%^&*ent, German intelligence officials offered more significant !@#$%^&*istance to the United States than their government has publicly acknowledged. »Ducky Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 I don't understand your first statement. Doesn't it indicate that Suddam trusted Germany. The agents got the information; but it doesn't exactly claim it was willingly handed over for the purpose it was used for.
MonteZuma Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 Yeah. It doesn't say how the Germans got the information. Saddam was not exactly a great friend of Germany, despite what the Republicans might say or think. For all we know, some Iraqi military dude might have walked into the German emb!@#$%^&*y and then: Iraqi military dude: 'Hey, will you get me on the first plane to Frankfurt if I tell you a little secret?'German emb!@#$%^&*y dude: 'ya ok, but it better be good'. Iraqi military dude is smuggled out at the first available opportunity (before or after the invasion).Germany sends the details to the Americans. Bobs your uncle. Or maybe the emb!@#$%^&*y intercepted a transmission or something. I doubt Hussein faxed the defense plans to Germany and said 'hey dude, what do you think of this? Good plan huh?'
»Ducky Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 That's silly Monte. It's all about email now adays.

Aileron Posted March 1, 2006 Report Posted March 1, 2006 Actually I think supposedly the German intelligence network is the second best in the world, and the absolute best in actually intentionally spying on people. I will note that due to the clandestine nature of intelligence networks it could very well be that someone else has a better network and no one knows. Still, their intelligence network is legendary. For example, they are the only nation known to have had a triple agent. To that end, asking "How did Germany get this information?" is like "How did the US take out the Baathist standing army so easy?". Germany's spies just simply outmatched the Baathist security forces plain and simple. Its always been my opinion that the invasion of Iraq was an unpopular war that had to be done, and that Bush, being more of an actual leader than a baby-kissing politician, didn't have the political savvy to put the blame on somebody else. To that end Germany's actions are consistent with my opinion...they knew it had to be done, so they helped us, but didn't want the political fallout, so they kept it secret. Now French and German opinion is slowly beginning to come around, probably as a result of Palestine electing Hamas, so they just let this information slip so as to join the winning side. (Again, Germany's spies are the best in the world - I wouldn't bet on them doing anything by accident.)
