Some stupid imans living in Denmark later went to middle east with alot of cartoons that wasent even printed in the newspaper or had any relation with the cartoons atall, they showed muslims leaders cartoons that wasent printed and a picture of a guy dressed like a pig from some french pig festival thing where people compete about who sounds most like a pig and i think that was kinda when everything went nuts.Someone wrote why thoes cartoons where printed in the first place and as i already wrote they where a part of a debate about culturel differences. And seriously why should we respect islam more that we respect other religions incl our own and dont question it and make fun of it aswell? I mean you can buy tshirts with a picture of jesus smoking a joint and so what? no one gets pissed about that. This is just fanatic idiots trying to get more influence by taking this to the extreem.

I think the western world is getting reasonably accurate (although simplified) coverage of this story. I heard about the pig fiasco. This certainly is a mountain made out of a molehill. Aileron Posted February 13, 2006 Report Posted February 13, 2006 Pernille, you are right in that we shouldn't respect Islam any more or less than our own religions. The fact that a lot of cartoons insult Christianity is also wrong in my opinion. My personal solution to the problem is to not watch those cartoons. If they want to insult my religion, they won't get my business. The fact that they make their money putting up cultural barriers that our predecessors gave their lives to take down is unsettling however. To that end, I say maybe the Muslim protesters have a point. Maybe we should be torqued when the figure of our religion of choice is mocked on TV. Comedy is about making people laugh and about bringing people together. This just divides people apart, giving one group an impression that they have the right to mock and laugh at somebody else for their beliefs. As an American, I think this goes against everything the First Amendment stands for. Maybe western societies shouldn't tolerate this as much as we do. We shouldn't limit free speech, but we should organise movements in the private sector to make sure that those who publish religious hate materials be put out of business.

Well said Aileron. Jesus didn't kill the devil, he ignored the temptations; Jesus was anti-censorship. Temptations aren't exactly the same as insults but its the same basic principle in that Christians shouldn't go round trying to censor everything they find offensive or vulgar. Islam is like Christianity 500 years ago, unfortunately we have to wait for it to catch up, although i don't think there are such clear examples of anti-censorship in the koran. Its hard to say whether or not one should be offended by these images. If someone put a picture of one of your deceased family members in the newspaper with a horse humping their face then you might feel offended. The love and belief of Muslims for the prophet Mohammed is probably similar to that of a deceased family member. They have a right to believe what they want even if that belief is a set of irrational !@#$%^&*umptions drummed into them by the society they were unfortunate enough to be brought up in. Its such a difficult question as to whether these things should be censored or not. I'm gonna swing to the opinion that they shouldn't be censored simply because its not that big a deal to see a cartoon Mohammed carrying a bomb. A real life picture (if there was one) might be a different issue because it wouldn't be someone elses personal representation anymore.

The solution isn't simply eradicating all belief in supernatural causes through extermination and war, its a process of education whereby an understanding between both sides is sought. In the end though i would like to see the demise of every organised religion.
pernille Posted February 14, 2006 Report Posted February 14, 2006 Yeah im danish and hi jim Your right about cartoons should make people laugh but alot also has a message, Dont know if anyone seen the cartoon movie as a child about the bateries (or however you spell it) that lives inside a boys mouth and he wont brush his teeth untill he get alot of toothpains and goes to the dentist who fixes it and thoes bacteries then dies or whatever. the cartoon is kinda funny and cute but the message in it is quite clear,brush your teeth or they will get full of holes and such. The same thing about the muhammed cartoons. But people do make jokes about many things, and not all are fun but still they manage to make us smile and maybe giggle abit cause its a way that people also deal with thoes things that are kinda bad/hard to deal with like tsunami ww2 wtc and so on. I came across some iranish cartoon about holocaust some even before they started that holocaust competetion, I also found other cartons about muhammed where they diddent get offended some dutch some french some even used for commercial perpurses so they should just stfu and stop the hypocrisy. SeVeR Posted February 14, 2006 Report Posted February 14, 2006 hi perni, i agree with what you said and would like to add that some reputations are earnt and unfortunately the reputation of Islam reflects what the cartoon is saying. If responses to this cartoon had been something like "the cartoon is false but shows the paranoia of the West over the actions of a small percentage of extremists" then i would have applauded them. The reactions I have seen from many Muslims have been quite hostile and only serve to show that alot of Muslims are actually not that far from being extremists themselves given the right trigger. It's rather sad to see. I listened to this guy called Michael Savage on the radio last night and he is quite blatently a Nazi Isolationist who believes non-Americans are sub-human. I think most of the world would be insulted by this man so maybe we should transmit some of his broadcasts to Saudi Arabia and Egypt so they can see what Americans have to deal with. It was funny listening to him comment about how a company from the UAE is controlling most of the Eastern ports in America... it's quite obvious he believes everyone from the UAE is a terrorist and must be stopped just because they're an Arab country. Although America isolating itself might not be such a bad thing in some respects, they'd at least stop interfering in the business of the rest of the world.

The violent ones (sans people insulting them) are mostly isolated groups of radicals, though I'm not sure I can say that about Palestine any more. Its just the media that's getting annoying to me here. They keep getting into a pattern of making brazingly stupid stories which cause a lot of damage, and then when people want to make them pay for the damage they cause, they hide behind free speech.

If 90% of the worlds terrorists are Islamic then that earns Islam the reputation of being a religion that blows stuff up with bombs. I'm not saying its a deserved reputation or thats it should be used to discriminate against Muslims but there wouldn't even be this cartoon if Islam hadn't got a reputation as being hostile. Christianity for me has a reputation of big light shows with sermons where the speaker talks in a strange tone of voice as if he's quivering in the cold but is really just trying to sound more holy than the other speakers at other big light shows.

The religion as a whole needs to take more responsibility for reigning in aberrant behaviour. I heard on the radio that an 8yo was killed in the latest round of cartoon related violence. Just look at how America is, it doesn't look very religious at all. They don't care about religion. I've seen churchs struggling to get money. We muslim communites help out and do friday prayers at churchs and give them half of what the muslims donate. With the rest of the money we create a mosque for ourselfs. But we muslims have read the koran some have even memorized it. Because of our parents being strict on us and making us read it. I didn't understand it but w/e its in the family. Anyways back to the topic, what if ur daddy was put up on there wouldnt you hate it. Prophet to us is like more than our father. He represents us we muslims love him to death. WE pray in the name of him. He is apart of every one of us muslims. Look if you hate muslims hate them, no is one stopping you. But you just dont insult them on a newspaper. Insulting Muhammad (PBUH) is insulting us muslims all. He gave us gods message he is precious to us.People just dont realize how much Muhammad (PBUH) means to us. First off I am a Christian who reads the Bible and goes to church every Sunday. I also live in America and I can also explain to you that in certain places ie. Bible Belt the families force their children to become orthodox Christians. We have plenty of Christian teachings on TV, clearly you have not flipped through American TV =). Dont believe me type in "Billy Graham TV" and you will see almost all of his sermons were televised. I agree the cartoons were probably offensive and I'm sure any person of religion would be insulted if their version of God was desecrated. But the question is would everyone resolve to violence to show their anger towards the cartoon. I believe there is no excuse for the behavior of many Muslims against the Danish and other western countries. I have heard from some Muslim scholars that the Koran teaches love and peace but in your post it seems as though you believe that the Prophet would be proud of your current defense for him. The question I would ask every Muslim right now is, do you think the Prophet is proud of the way Muslims are defending Islam. As Christians we are taught to turn the other cheek when insulted or harmed. We are also taught to respect the government of this world. We are also taught when false teachers come leaders must first remind them, then publicly discipline them, and when all else fails remove them from the body of believers. Islam has failed in that not large amounts of leaders have publicly denounced false teachers who spread teachings of extremism. This makes the world believe that the leaders accept extremism which is why there is so much animosity against Islam. But in conclusion the Bible teaches us to have a forgiving heart and that only our perfect God can judge us.

I'm sure if the Muslim community did not react in the way they did many news agencies would write about the offensiveness of the cartoons. But thanks to the violent outbreaks of the Muslim people now the news only reports on the people killed and buildings burned by this fiasco.
