XDOOM Posted January 6, 2006 Report Posted January 6, 2006 Hey guys. We need a new map for the zone. And for that matter a new tileset. Here is the deal ... we can only do this if we have new bases, because quite frankly, these bases are getting too tight, too small for a large flag game in these settings. I'm not talking about massive bases, but bases like what you see in red star and EG. I know SOS for the most part is against this ... he likes the old school look. However, its not going to help our zone if we dont make a change and soon.
»SOS Posted January 6, 2006 Report Posted January 6, 2006 (edited) A change might hurt, bad! As an example, I can bring the now-dead zone Battlefield 2 which prospered with 40+ pop but then one day a new and flasy map style was brought in. Updated in every aspect, very modern. BAM! The population dropped like a stone. The zone went back to its low levels and eventually died due to other circumstances. But I'm willing to explore our options, even though I think EG and RS are some of the worst maps out there and I really get this weird feelign when you bring them up as examples Of course first we need a tileset that looks good. That's the biggest thing. After that, bases are not too hard... Now how to get the tileset.... Edited March 4, 2009 by Hakaku word filters are lame
XDOOM Posted January 7, 2006 Author Report Posted January 7, 2006 I found a map maker, but he is too busy for a tileset ... but a map is a start.
XDOOM Posted January 7, 2006 Author Report Posted January 7, 2006 He said he would not make your typical boring map, something not syymmetrical. SO we'll see what he comes up with.
kick me!! Posted January 7, 2006 Report Posted January 7, 2006 A change might hurt, bad! The population dropped like a stone. The zone went back to its low levels and eventually died due to other cir!@#$%^&*stances. That's the biggest thing. After that, bases are not too hard... Now how to get the tileset.... WELL PUT. Honestly, I only think one person came to me and said our tileset sucks OPPOSE to like, 35 people telling me they like the look. New map? Definitely, as well as longer bases. I've been working on bases myself sometimes, because I get bored every now and then. Keep the tileset, change the map/bases.
XDOOM Posted January 7, 2006 Author Report Posted January 7, 2006 I;ve had 10-12 people say the tileset is old.
»Swift Posted January 7, 2006 Report Posted January 7, 2006 Altec and I have some old Abyss tilesets if you need those.
XDOOM Posted January 8, 2006 Author Report Posted January 8, 2006 Altec and I have some old Abyss tilesets if you need those. I believe legas is making a tileset/map for us now ... map first I believe.
tm_master Posted January 10, 2006 Report Posted January 10, 2006 ... This is ironic, since I was just thinking about how the map needs to be bigger, but only to support more/bigger bases for 3+ freq flag games. Do I like the old tileset...? I'm probably showing my age here and the fact that I've been playing this game way too !@#$%^&* long, but I honestly like Deva's simpler tileset. I really do agree with SOS, sometimes a simpler approach actually works better in the case of maps/tilesets. From my past experiences I've found that most of the time, people don't want a map that's TOO big and intricate in design or takes forever to get from point A to point B in (especially when it concerns flagging zones and bases) and may actually leave a zone because of the map. This makes me think back to a time long ago when Devastation did a major map change from the center greens to the center safe. When XDOOM eventually switched it back to the center greens, I can recall at least one person (can't remember the nick) who actually left the zone completely because of that switch back, and I'm sure there were a couple more (although I personally prefer the center greens square for dogfights/center bombing). Sometimes, less is more. But you just can't please everyone when it comes to map/tileset design. To me, it's whatever works/gains population that we should stick with regardless of personal opinion. It would be nice to run a couple experiments to see if we can bring in some new people with a radically modern tileset, but it could end up doing more harm than good in the long run. Hmm.. --TM_Master OUT...
XDOOM Posted January 10, 2006 Author Report Posted January 10, 2006 Legas made a tileset, is up a in private arena. SOS and I both liked it, and anyone else whos been to that arena has liked it as well. The map is next and naturally will take a lil bit of time due to the more complex tileset. Legas is also starting a sub-dev-team of several of his friends to work on event maps/tilesets for the zone. This is going to be a huge boost for the zone.
