  1. 100% agree - this is not the way to go Then we shall feast and drink 'til the morning sun Yea we're working on a great idea for asss - ill post it in the other forum.. but it nips one of asss's biggest criticisms in the ass lol... Check out the as3 page in these forums
  2. I think your point about developer motivation is true but only under some circumstances. I wouldnt say its aways true.. About As3 I know what you mean about it being for high end users, and in its present form, it is. But because this project is open, we can take any criticism of it, generate concensus and evolve the software. We can build dev plugins that allow less skilled users to develop. I think as3 is getting there, but its still very much in its unborn state. It needs time and love at this point and I'm happy to give it both. For now we should focus on alternative marketting strategies I think.. Steam can await. We can tide ourselves over by exploring untapped communities elsewhere on the net while we improve/update our gameplay experience
  3. I think its the future for this community, not the present. It needs development modules that ease the interface for new users so they can build content too... But way before that, it needs to be finished. At present the mood in dsb has reverted to "as3 is interesting but we dont need it" The real reason why its good though is because its open source. Hopefully we'll be able to contribute to its development and then when its ready we can impliment it.
  4. What's wrong with Discretion? It may or may not be a failed pun on 'Continuum', although that should be Discretization, which just isn't as sexy as Discretion. 0_o ?? lol - Anyway, I'll talk to my guys this weekend and see where we're all at. You know, most of us haddnt heard of discretion before last weekend, so I think I'm going to take a tour of the community this weekend and get the word out, see if I can find some extra people to devote to your cause. C++ Coders you need? C++ Coders you shall get. In my perspective, AS3 and Discretion are the future of this community. The sooner we step into the future the more options are going to be made available to us. We'll be able to negotiate on our own behalf with large companies. We'll be able to add great new content to our games and most importantly, we'll be free of the sleeping dragon! Meet me in the SS dev chat channel
  5. Its not just dsb that needs to convert to as3 and discretion to be attractive to steam, our whole community needs to be under our own power before we're going to attract the attention of anyone that wants to do real business with us. That means, this push is a community wide effort. I will be coordinating between zones that in all of my years here, i have never logged into. I will be offering up our capability and experience to ensure that everyone understands the value of as3 and has enough support from us and the community to set it up for their zone. As3 is the future and we need to step into it ASAP. Without full control over our software, we're nothing but a slowly sinking ship.
  6. Nooo... :\
  7. Well, I think I might be able to help you there.. See, you all know of DSB as the zone that doesnt innovate. Its not because we dont have qualified programmers or motivated & available staff. Its because we have some kind of bizzarre arrangement where the people who have server access to post our dev work simply arnt around to do it. It seems that for whatever reason, this has always been the case. For the longest time we had people in charge who dont know much about how to play the game or what 'good balanced settings' are. These are people who were handed the Key to dsb and told "Take good care of her, we have a nice balance of settings here, DONT TOUCH ANYTHING". This policy might have worked fine in 2000 when our zone was still somewhat on par with others but.. now that its 2009..... So on principal, they'd refused to do anything and refused to think of what the advantages/disadvantages are (if any) of a proposal. These days, things are better, I am able to get buyin from most of our (non sysop) staff and thats usually enough to get good ideas though. But please consider how this kind of dynamic can affect people... We have devs who have a all this pent up energy and creativity waiting to go... Most of the time, theyre not even near burnout because they're constantly in this state of mind that they couldnt dev if they wanted to. Long story short, our guys are just itching to contribute to this community. So far, the first dev I approached (Greenish) said he'd be more than happy to help on open source SS projects. I think our guys would be best helpful by assisting with the production of the ASSS plugins that we still require to make our zone function as it did with sg2. Though we do have some guys who are very interested in the Discretion project too. Anyway, I've yet to approach our other devs, but I suspect you'll be impressed by our guys when I'm able instil within them the understanding that without AS3, we're not going anywhere but backwards as a community.
  8. Well I think we can run it in a virtualized linux environment on one of our pc's without any trouble. My personal internet connection should be able to support 40 ppl (Bottleneck is 200k/s upstream) Our guys are also shying away from linux at this point... While nobody has said outright they dont want to work with linux, they did say they dont know it. One good thing thats come out of ths is that one of our programmers (greenish) has said he is very much interested in assisting with the asss project (building needed modules for dsb etc..) Ive already sent him over to your bit-bucket page that you linked to earlier.
  9. That's because records usually have to be performed in front of a licensed Guiness dude, or at least confirmed in person by one. I understood why, it's obvious, but I just thought it was weird because not all records (like the one we're trying to obtain) can be "performed" at a moments notice. We're looking for a record that we presumably accomplished a long time ago. tell them we're performing our record as you write your message to them lol
  10. Great suggestions - we're looking for ease of setup for sure.. our guys are pretty convinced it involves lots of rebooting with a cd in the drive etc etc *Facepalm* Unfortunately our server access is reserved to people who are inactive or arnt comfortable working with it. We need to preconfigure our virtual linux environment offsite unfortunately I know, dsb is backwards
  11. Sold! Any particular distro? Can it be pre-configured on another machine and then loaded on our server? EDIT by Dr Brain: why does the reply button look like the edit button? I just erased this whole post and typed it back from memory... EDIT: updated by ts22
  12. I fully agree linux is the way to go - Our server is not running linux though I've been suggesting dropping a linux kernel ontop of the windows platform its running but im concerned about the performance hit but is that even worth worrying about though?
  13. OoOoOoO I know it would triple your workload but Id just like to state the obvious and say that I think that it would be ideal to offer support for legacy SS zones as well but... yea ... Still, great project!
  14. Hey guys! Huge amount of love to all you out there!! - Your energy has been great lately and I just want to toss it back at you!! My hands are empty again, and you know what that means! Its time for a new project. This time I'm off to harass the kind folks over at newgrounds. I'm at work now so I'll edit this post soon and include some more details but basically the same idea. See if we can get these guys to host our client for free. Oh, I heard a strange criticism some random player brought up the other day. He said "As a vet, do you REALLY want to fill our zones with a bunch of noobs?" Interesting question.. and ya... I can see his perspective but... even if his point is truly valid, the truth is, those people will only be noobs for a few months Any other sites you guys want me to spam? I know Rapidshare was mentioned but... Arnt they more of a file repository that you would have to know what you were looking for ahead of time to make use of? ... I dunno, i dont use Rapidshare..
  15. Hey guys, I just wanted to toss a small amount of motivation / positive energy on the project... One of DSB's most talented programmers (not generally a very excitable person) was blown away when I told him about the open source SS client projects and he has pledged that if Discretion is 'completed' that he will write a bot API that learns and adapts. He said he has been wishing that this was possible for years and it looks like youve made his dream begin to come true. I am also spearheading an initiative to get the word out around the community about the open source projects we're working on and why even an incomplete open source client is more valuable than a completed closed source one. I am also energizing some of our programmers to become passionate enough about these projects to contribute themselves. We are all very very excited about bringing this community into full control of its software thereby opening many doors for our future. I hope to be able to sit down with Bak shortly and discuss the health of the project. A couple questions while im here though: What is the difference between discretion and ss2? Why wasnt it called OpenSpace?
  16. Unfortunately I cant speak for Jowie, but I can say we're not using anything custom - but we are using an old version of python.
  17. Hey guys, So we've been made aware by Jowie that his ASSS server for his zone will inexplicably crash about once a day or so. This is unacceptable for DSB unfortunately but we were wondering if its possible this is a configurations issue or if we could narrow in on the problem so we can bug-report it to make this server software more viable for us. Or has it already been corrected in 1.5? EDIT: I'm told in our testing environment on XP, the server crashed on its own twice in 4 hours. Maybe something to do with players changing arenas? Not sure... EDIT2: Aparantly, our server logs are set to just log commands. It was suggested to our dev to log all server activity but he is not sure how to set that up. If you could let me know, I can provide the proper server logs for this issue and maybe we can get to the bottom of it.
  18. yea we'd done that It was related to the min # of players in the zone, for some reason, the old settings needed to be tweaked. So, we got the most recent issue **SOLVED**
  19. I just want to add that i do have python 26 installed on my pc, and that I can load the module fg_wz successfully the_snake> ?insmod fg_wz Module fg_wz loaded successfully -update- apparently downgrading to python 24 fixed the issues This is now SOLVED lol @ double post Ok well we got the fg_turf module to load At preasent though no flags still. We're double checking our settings.
  20. I just want to add that i do have python 26 installed on my pc, and that I can load the module fg_wz successfully the_snake> ?insmod fg_wz Module fg_wz loaded successfully -update- apparently downgrading to python 24 fixed the issues This is now SOLVED lol @ double post
  21. Status update on our testing: We'll work through it, but at this point we have a confusing inability to connect to the biller with as3 1.4.4 on win 7 We can make 1.4.4 work with subgame to connect to the biller but..... ya EDIT: ** SOLVED ** A new issue now - we are having trouble loading the fg_turf module 2:the_snake> first this 2:the_snake> when we try to run pymod we get this 2:the_snake> the_snake> ?insmod pymod:pymod 2:the_snake> E can't import cPickle 2:the_snake> Module pymod:pymod loaded successfully 2:the_snake> and then 2:the_snake> the_snake> ?insmod fg_turf 2:the_snake> E error loading python module 'fg_turf' 2:the_snake> Loading module fg_turf failed 2:the_snake> and its neccessary to run our turf game of dsb
  22. I think meridian 59 beats us? i could be wrong I applied yesterday, but I won't get a reply for 4-6 weeks Are you serious!? If you ARE serious - dude KUDOS TO YOU! Nice job Nice nice nice! This is great too .... that is, as long as you can work continuum into your edits
  23. I just want to take a moment here to say that I'm completely blown away by the quality on this forum. I was in a meeting discussing this and the lot of you got back to me allowing all multinational parties involved to maintain their attention span and continue the meeting. Outstanding And 0 flames
  24. This is also great to know, tyvm
  25. Yup this was my suggestion to our team as well. Was just hoping for a heads up - but the trial by fire approach works too By the way, thanks very much for your fine ASSS... Sorry I couldnt resist, but sincerely, its very much appreciated
