  1. I'm having trouble building on FreeBSD 9.2 (x64). I had to modify some of the #includes to add the full path of the header. The default paths were correct but for some reason it could not find some of the headers. Anyway.. gcc -std=gnu99 -pipe -pthread -fPIC -shared -o ../build/discretion.so ../build/disc_audit.o ../build/disc_audit_serverside.o ../build/AuditHelper.o ../build/LittleEndian.o ../build/util.o ../build/disc_main.o ../build/enc_disc.o -lz -lm -lpthread -Wl,-Bstatic `sdl-config --static-libs` -lSDL_net -Wl,-Bdynamic /usr/bin/ld: /usr/local/lib/libSDL.a(SDL_error.o): relocation R_X86_64_32S against `a local symbol' can not be used when making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC /usr/local/lib/libSDL.a: could not read symbols: Bad value gmake: *** [../build/discretion.so] Error 1 Note that the Makefile already adds -fPIC parameter.
  2. Bosonic string theory involves a total of 26 dimensions and m-theory involves 11. Its important to note that the concept of these dimensions is entirely mathematic. There is no way yet to show that they actually exist in the universe...String theory works in the world of math. It has yet to be proved (or disproved) in the real universe. And yes, we might be able to observe 4 dimentions.. but you cant just leave out the 22 remaining ones (or 7). I think its up to the mathematicians to refine the theory to more managable terms, if possible. I mean, math in 3-space is quite complicated.. I don't even wanna think about anything higher.. Although, I'm sure its all very interesting if you understand all the math behind it..
  3. creepy thing is.. all of what he did probably seemed like the right thing to to him. I mean.. every one has friends that they probably take for granted.. what if you didnt..? After a while.. after seeing everyone socializing with people and hanging out with friends day after day, do you think you would be able to live with yourself? What are you gonna do.. I am not saying what he did was right in any way.. but he probably had his reasons. After a long time of being depressed or whatever, you dont want help or want to fix things, you just want everything to be over with.. Sometimes, people might have absolutely no reason or desire to live..
  4. String Theory or any other 'grand-unified theory' (M-Theory..etc) will never be proven...The math works out all right, (as difficult as it might be...) however, no experiment can be performed in the real world that would explicitly tell us that these strings exist. At this point, scientists are only beginning to construct experiments that might be able to disprove string theory using particle accelerators and such. That being said, if these experiments don't disprove string theory (or parts of it), then youre back to where you started. The problem with tiny things is the uncertainty principle, meaning that theres inherent error no matter how sophisticated your observing apparatus is..You can only know the precise position of a particle or its precise momentum. Since strings are smaller than any particle that might exist, observing them would be very very difficult or even impossible. As it was said earlier.. its more about the math behind it than anything.. So far, three of the four fundamental forces have their mediating particles. The graviton is the only hypothetical one and string theory would go about proving its existance. Quantum particles (photons, electrons etc..) exibit particle duality. This means they behave as a particle and a wave simultaniously. Certain experiments only work if you treat them as waves, others only as particles and even some experiments give results either way.. Gamma rays are extremely high in energy, whatever material youre observing will most likely emit photo-electons (as a result of the photoelectic effect) and the incident ray will probably end up going through the material. Im not sure how they might be used to observe quantum particles though.. Anyway.. thats enough for now.. If the Sun suddenly dissapeared, would the Earth and the rest of the planets deviate from their orbit at this instant?
  5. pfft.. list songs and show next 3 songs and such might be counter-productive. The only thing that could be handy is to show the current track, and thats it..kinda like real radio..? If people see the play list, they might decide upfront weather they will listen or not and you will lose listeners. Active DJs and requests would keep the station alive..not nifty bots in arenas that could be abused.. For requests, all you need is for the DJ and listeners to join a chat channel.. You say "Can you play Stairway to Heaven?" and the DJ decides if they take requests or not.. no !browse or !request or any fancy queue-lists, why make something more complicated than it needs to be? it's radio, not a jukebox.. However.. not to totally bash the idea.. bot controlled radio would be usefull when theres no DJ to host a show. But then why listen in the first place.. just pop a CD in the drive or whatever.
  6. How would an FPS game be in any way related to SS/Continuum? Besides.. developers are hard to come by these days (especially within the continuum comminity).
  7. midi could be nice.. Although, the problem with midi is that not everyone might have a decent wavetable and it could sound really crappy on some machines and really nice on others. However, if you're good with midi sequencing, you can make some really nice sounding background music. It can't hurt to implement it eventually I think. However, as far as music and contunuum go, I think it would be better for the game and the community to simply rely on radio stations run by the people for their listening needs.
  8. That probably wouldn't do anything, as the problem is at the far end of the route. Besides, the hassle of changing ISPs is not really worth EG.
  9. Well.. its been more than 3 months and the trace results are looking the same. My ISP obviously can't do anything about it. And The folks at hopone are probably well aware of the issue by now, however, I doubt it would get resolved. Perhaps the owner of the server(s) could contact hopone regarding the faulty routing. This is probably affecting a lot of players in the eastern US/Canada.
  10. Ive been playing SS/Continuum on and off since 2000, and its really nice to see that things are getting done! Even though Discretion is still in its infancy, I must say, it feels very comfortable to play. I am sure its much to early to worry about this, but I agree with some of the posts. The file structure (although convenient for developers) might be a little ..intimidating.. to the novice. Having mp3 or ogg files for the sound effects might be a little overkill, I know ogg is open-source, but isn't a lisence for mp3 required to encode files. I think wave files more than satisfactory and are much easier to work with. The only place where I see any reason for compressed audio is if a zone would have background music or something. I really wish I could contribute more to the project, but I've only finished an introductory course in C. It seems I am in the wrong feild of study to be of any help . I might be able to help out with some of the graphics though, and maybe sound effects too. Anyway, to those developing, you guys are doing a great job! Keep up the good work and have fun!
  11. I decided to get back into SS/Continuum while schools out, and to my dismay.. i cant really play.. The fine folks at EG use strict lag restrictions and I cant play because my packet loss is one percent higher than their limit.. anyway.. enough about them. I've notced a lot of people have been having similar issues (especially with hopone, see below) regarding packet loss. It's a routing problem to most of the SSCU zones (for me anyway). I doubt my ISP will do anything about it, I have yet to call.. I just hope it gets resolved before school starts..
