Why restrict yourself to one type of weapon with different colors. It would be so cool if you could create any kind of weapon (take a look at Star Control 2, the video game for a good illustration of what I mean). Then we could create ships that fire missles, or only shoot continuous lasers, or how about little robots that fly around you and emulate your fire (like gradius) There are so many possibilities.
