»doc flabby Posted April 29, 2008 Report Posted April 29, 2008 (edited) (been talking about doing this for a while finally done it!) I've created a new, newb friendly installer. It creates a name and password for a newb player. Basically they can start playing straight away and don't' have to try to work out how to setup a profile. It only works on clean installs (ie to a new continuum folder) If you install over an existing install it leaves the current settings alone. If anyone cares to test it out. Ensure you have a FULL BACKUP (including passwords) it shouldnt delete anything it shouldnt but it still could if ive made a mistake Link below http://subspace2.net/Continuum040Setup-DocFlabby.exe Full source at http://subspace2.net/continuum040.iss if anyone wants it Edited April 29, 2008 by doc flabby
»Lynx Posted April 29, 2008 Report Posted April 29, 2008 This should be replaced with the continuum installer at getcontinuum.com
Dav Posted April 29, 2008 Report Posted April 29, 2008 fantastic, I hope this deals with the problems people have with getting bored of looking for names GJ
Trained Posted April 29, 2008 Report Posted April 29, 2008 Ill replace getcontinuum.com and get-continuum.coms installer tonight. Thanks doc flabby!
»doc flabby Posted April 29, 2008 Author Report Posted April 29, 2008 (edited) Dont be so hasty, i put it up for testing.....not to be used. Its only been tested on one system running windows xp. I want to know if it works on other systems......and if there are any bugs or issues.... Edited April 29, 2008 by doc flabby
Samapico Posted April 29, 2008 Report Posted April 29, 2008 It 'always' adds random numbers to the name?If this installer will replace the default installer on getcontinuum, I suggest being able to skip the name creation step (not only newbies will be using it) and/or disable the adding of random numbers. Say you already have a username, and write it down there, with your password, you'll find yourself not using your old account. I haven't even tested it, honnestly, but I just checked through the code... Too lazy to backup my profiles right now

Heres an email I got a couple of days ago: josh kramlinger to me show details Apr 28 (1 day ago) Reply its asking me for a psssword but i didnt try very hard It was a guy from a large online gaming site, he was having trouble figuring out how to get started. Good thing for something like this actually. Edited April 29, 2008 by Trained
rootbear75 Posted April 30, 2008 Report Posted April 30, 2008 yo flabby, is there any way you can set it up so the installer asks where you heard about the game?via cards, banner ads, mmorpg sites, top100, etc...

Dav Posted April 30, 2008 Report Posted April 30, 2008 indeed, would be good to see where people are hearing about the game so we know where to focus our efforts
Drake7707 Posted April 30, 2008 Report Posted April 30, 2008 why not asks for a name & password in a installer wizard screen rather than making a random one ?
»doc flabby Posted April 30, 2008 Author Report Posted April 30, 2008 (edited) why not asks for a name & password in a installer wizard screen rather than making a random one ?It does. It then appends a random number to the name you request. The reason for this is because of the design flaw SSC as it does not distinquish between new users trying to register a name already in use or a password hacking attempt. Thus the only realistic solution is to attempt to ensure every username it creates is unique. I think adding an option for existing players to skip name creation would be a good idea. It would be relativly easy to get the installer to report "how did u find us" it would just have to hit a php script. Edited April 30, 2008 by doc flabby
Dav Posted April 30, 2008 Report Posted April 30, 2008 that would be good. Perhaps allow a guide to be loaded that explains how it will work, and if you want a name later how to ?find to see that it is not taken then create it.
JDS Posted April 30, 2008 Report Posted April 30, 2008 honestly , unless you HAD to say where you heard about the game from.. 99% of people would skip that part
Aceflyer Posted April 30, 2008 Report Posted April 30, 2008 Heres an email I got a couple of days ago: josh kramlinger to me show details Apr 28 (1 day ago) Reply its asking me for a psssword but i didnt try very hard It was a guy from a large online gaming site, he was having trouble figuring out how to get started. Good thing for something like this actually. Was this sent to your @getcontinuum.com email (out of curiosity), or was this from the Continuum cards you passed out? I haven't received any emails from (prospective) players through either my personal @getcontinuum.com email or our shared @getcontinuum.com email address...
Trained Posted April 30, 2008 Report Posted April 30, 2008 It was someone I contacted with my personal email about advertising on his site, and that was his reply.
»Maverick Posted May 1, 2008 Report Posted May 1, 2008 Added it to getcontinuum.com It's best if you do NOT add it to getcontinuum.com unless everybody is absolutely sure it's working 100% and not giving ANY problems towards new players. Please don't do any such rash things on our primary advertisement website.
Aceflyer Posted May 1, 2008 Report Posted May 1, 2008 I am with Mav. Last thing we want is to have a beta/buggy installer on GetContinuum when the current 0.40 one is working perfectly.
»doc flabby Posted May 4, 2008 Author Report Posted May 4, 2008 Im extremly keen if someone running vista could test this and tell me if it works for them.
Wonderer Posted June 9, 2008 Report Posted June 9, 2008 Perhaps you guys could add a survey to getcontinuum.com that could also be posted to remotly. Then just have the user prompted at the end of the download asking if they would be willing to fill out a survey and have it ask where they found it with optional fields for name, country, sex, age, and comments. If this is something you'd be interesyed in doing let me know and I'll create a DB for you to use. Aside from the survey questions the only other information i'd want to track is ip and time.

Just email me the MySQL Info and I'll make up a script.
