Trained Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 ...That is, if we get through 2012 alive... This seemed like it would be an interesting subject. I was watching the history channel the other day and they had a special on this, they say many prophets predicted the world ending in this year. There was one that they discussed that really caught my attention; they said that a prophet had predicted the world ending in this year due to a warmer state. I've read alot about the earth and global warming, and they say that at the rate the ice caps are melting, then we're definitely in for it. Anyway, what do you guys think?
Dav Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 world has been predicted to end by many in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2007..... a warmer state could mean just about anything IMO, warming, volcano...
»Lynx Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 Predictions are for gullible people. I can't wait until they're all proven wrong, it's like when they found out the world wasn't really flat, the only reaction was.. "Oh yeah, how could of I been so dumb!"
Trained Posted April 16, 2008 Author Report Posted April 16, 2008 I don't believe in predicting anything without physical evidence that something is going to happen (such as an action). I do think it was merely coincidence. The statements they make are so vague that it can really mean a variety of things. The base seems to be the Mayan calender because it stops in 2012, but that means nothing to me. I guess the only real way to find out if its true or false is in 2013.
NBVegita Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 Plus if you've truly researched global warming, beyond watching the news and inconvenient truth, you'll find that our climate is not changing as radically as is publically shown. But enough on that I could go on for hours pointing out the flaws in the common misconceptions of man made global warming epidemic, which is a totally different topic. In short, the Mayan calendar had to end sometime, that does not mean that the world will simply cease to exist because of it.
Suicide_Run Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 Psh I believe there is global warming but it aint on the level the m!@#$%^&* media seem to broadcast it as. Besides my prof (yes I study environmental science =/) said the rims of the ice cap melts and the core gets some/most of it back thru precipitation due to the extra water content present.
Cancer+ Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 world has been predicted to end by many in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2007..... I thought those were the years that Tupac was supposed to come back from the dead too. The world isn't going to end in 2012. Maybe some day. If it does end, I want it to end like the Terminator or the Matrix. Not no boring 'global warming'.

I think we have like what 5 billion years left until its supposed to start expanding and sucking the earth in?
»Lynx Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 On global warming I've read much more interesting topics that the Sun is actually becoming warmer, as all other planets are also warming up. Also, carbon particles in soil hasn't increased as much as the media often state. I think it's just very convenient for the government to say that global warming is a huge issue as pretty much anything industrial is bad for the environment, so they can tax more.
JDS Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 (edited) hey i have an idea, use the garbage can instead of litering, recycle, and walk a few days a week... global warming = solved edit: whoever said world will end on 2012 should be punched in the face and lynched on jan1st 2012 for being such a !@#$%^&*got Edited April 16, 2008 by JDS
rootbear75 Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 In short, the Mayan calendar had to end sometime, that does not mean that the world will simply cease to exist because of it.hasn't the Mayan calendar successfully predicted every disaster? (human or non)
Hakaku Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 I've actually seen a few different things that lead to the end of 'humanity' in 2012; one of the most prominent ideas is the end of the world according to both Mayan and Hopi mythology, but other peoples also believe(d) in something similar was to happen in 2012 (Egyptians, Kabbalists, Essenes, Qero elders of Peru, Navajo, Cherokee, Apache, Iroquois confederacy, Dogon Tribe, and Aborigines). This means no more SS, sorry folks.
NBVegita Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 the mayans have been right on SOME predictions, but not that many. !@#$%^&* even the farmer's almanac has been right on some predictions. Their calendar had to end sometime, just as our calendar has a tenative end too.
ThunderJam Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 There was a big topic on this in the poltical board. got shot down..

Aileron Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 I'm not sure the world is going to end, but I am sure that everyone should make a Zombie Survival plan in case it does. Unfortunately Cancer, while I certainly think machines are evil enough to cause the apocalypse, I don't think they are competent enough. I have yet to see a video game AI that wasn't stupid enough to do something suicidal. And all computer games are in the category mathematicians call matrix-games anyway, which means there are a finite number of options both sides can take. The universe has an infinite number of options, thus no computer can function to cover all possibilities. My guess is a hoard of the living dead ends the world: Zombie plan topic I think Lynx is one the money with global warming. I do have a more serious prediction of the end of the world which would occur around 2012ish, but I won't sully this forum with BS unless you people really want to read it.

Guest Did Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 No the world is not going to end in 2012 that is a load of crap As for the sun, when the sun does expand (in what, 5 billions years?) by that time humans will have had the technology to move onto other planets etc. Well thats just my guess.
»Lynx Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 5bn years, Earth will have been consumed by a wormhole
Incomplete Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 5 Billion years there would have been enough farts to melt the ice caps...
Trained Posted April 17, 2008 Author Report Posted April 17, 2008 WormholesThorne believes there could be another type of tunnel-like structure existing in the universe that could be used for a time travel portal. Wormholes, also called Einstein-Rosen Bridges, are considered to have the most potential for time travel if they do exist. Not only could they allow us to travel through time, they could allow us to travel many light-years from Earth in only a fraction of the amount of time that it would take us with conventional space travel methods. Wormholes are considered possible based on Einstein's theory of relativity, which states that any m!@#$%^&* curves spacetime. To understand this curvature, think about two people holding a bed sheet up and stretching that sheet tight. If one person were to place a baseball on the bed sheet, the weight of the baseball would roll to the middle of the sheet and cause the sheet to curve at that point. Now, if a marble were placed on the edge of the same bed sheet it would travel toward the baseball because of the curve. In space, masses that place pressure on different parts of the universe could eventually come together to form a tunnel -- this is a wormhole. We could then travel from Earth to another galaxy and back relatively quickly (within a lifetime). For instance, let's picture a scenario in which we would want to travel to Sirius, a star that's seen in the Canis Major constellation just below Orion. Sirius is about 9 light-years from Earth, which is about 54 trillion miles (90 trillion km). Obviously, this distance would be far too great for space travelers to traverse and return in time to tell us about what they saw there. So far, the farthest people have traveled into space is to the moon, which is only about 248,548 miles (about 400,000 km) away from Earth. If we could find a wormhole that connected us to the space around Sirius, then we could cut the time considerably by avoiding the trillions of miles that we would have to cross with traditional space travel. »D1st0rt Posted April 17, 2008 Report Posted April 17, 2008 We already had this discussion: http://www.ssforum.net/index.php?showtopic=19128 I'm still more scared of year 2038

Besides my prof (yes I study environmental science =/) said the rims of the ice cap melts and the core gets some/most of it back thru precipitation due to the extra water content present. The thing both these posts point at is the way the media portrays it. The predictions do give data consistent with what they broadcast, only problem is it's is the upper limits of the models they use for stories. On the other hand the sceptics will take the lower limits. Lower limit = little/no effectUpper limit = imminent doom The reality is that the warming effect is somewhere in the middle of these extremes, problem is people ignore this and take whichever extreme supports their view. You then need to add to that both sides conveniently ignoring some of the facts to make their argument sound more placeable. In a nuts!@#$%^&* there is no conspiracy, there is no imminent doom. Warming does need to be dealt with but not by completely abandoning all technology tomorrow, or proving the government wrong to keep tax down. We just need to develop green technologies, stop being so !@#$%^&* wasteful and stop destroying things solely in the name of profit.
